Abstract:The efficient and environmentally friendly enrichment of rare earth elements (REEs) from complex ionic rare earth leachate presents a significant challenge due to the low concentration of REEs and high impurity content. Traditional industrial enrichment process of REEs from ionic rare earth leachate necessitate the use of excessive MgO to ensure complete REEs enrichment, resulting in a low REEs content in the concentrate. In this study, we developed a clean and efficient method for REEs enrichment from ionic rare earth leachate using anionic membrane electrolysis (AME). Different parameters including current density, rotational speed, electrode distance, final pH and electrolysis temperature were investigated to enhance the REEs enrichment and reduce the magnesium coprecipitation. Under optimal conditions, the precipitation efficiency of REEs reached 98.4 %, while that of magnesium impurity was only 1.7 %. The contents of REO and MgO in the concentrate were able to reach 60.8 % and 0.75 %, respectively. The promotion of rotational speed reduced the accumulation of OH- near the electrode surface and inhibited the coprecipitation of Mg2+. The data for REEs precipitate fit the pseudo-zero order model under optimal conditions, with a rate constant (k) of 4.06 mg center dot L- 1 center dot min- 1. The REEs were enriched formed hydroxy sulfate rare earth compounds and rare earth hydroxide, the Mg (II) impurity was mainly enriched in the deposits of cathode and formed in magnesium hydroxide and magnesium ore. As the pH of the bulk solution increased during electrolysis, the deposits became denser, increasing the resistance to electron transfer of electrochemical process.
