Abstract:In this study, a novel N-doped ilmenite/biochar catalyst (ILM@NBC) was synthesized by simple one-step calcination, and its performance in activating persulfate (PS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation under visible light was evaluated. Both the present active species and direct electron transfer contribute to the observed rapid degradation of TC. The biochar with introduced pyridinic N served as tunnels for electron transfer and promoted the generation of active species, including Fe(IV), sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot- ), and superoxide radicals (O2 center dot-). The electron transfer pathways were proposed. Notably, ILM@N6BC, the optimized ILM@NBC, presented excellent adaptability over a wide pH range (2-12) and for various water matrices, demonstrating great potential for contaminant removal in real applications. Furthermore, the possible by-products of the TC degradation process were identified, and their toxicity was evaluated. This study provides new insights into the design of efficient, stable, and green catalysts for PS activation.
