Abstract:Hydrogen production based on electrochemical strategies in seawater is limited by sluggish water oxidation and chlorine corrosion, the low-cost and efficient catalyst design is critical and should be the priority. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are ideal systems to investigate the intrinsic catalytic properties of transition metal. Here, we reveal the selectivity of various catalysts and the interactions between the coordination environment and the catalytic atoms to evaluate their performance in seawater via DFT. The results show that the CER path is chlorination of adsorbed OH*, and the CoN4-C 4 - C has the best performance in OER (f OER = 0.36 V) and CER (f CER = 0.62 V). The presence of the fifth coordination from alkalized seawater activated the dz2 z 2 orbital of the SACs, leading to an enhanced adsorption of OH*, which, although slightly increasing the OER overpotential for OH/ CoN4-C 4 - C (f OER = 0.46 V), also considerably broadened the window of the electrolysis stabilization (f CER- f OER = 1.11 V). A new descriptor is developed as the descriptors for identify the OER and CER selectivity, instead of tedious full complete process calculations. This work provides novel insights for the OER and CER based transition metal in seawater splitting and contributes to the development of next-generation efficient anti-chlorine OER catalysts.
