Abstract:Scandate cathode exhibits the highest emission property among all the thermionic cathodes. Scanadia Doped Dispenser cathode (SDD cathode) is one of the promising cathodes due to its good emission property and reproducibility. The impacts of local electric field enhancement on emission capability of cathode have be considered by applying the actions of Schottky effect and electric field on semiconductor model presented by D. Wright[1]. The calculation results show that the current densities near the spherical nanoparticles are less than 2 times higher than that of the surrounding area. After operating with high current densities at high temperatures for a relative long time, this function was reduced due to the loss of the nanoparticles.

Abstract:Scandium oxide bodies doped tungsten have been made by both mechanical mixing scandium oxide with tungsten powder and scandate aqueous solution doping tungsten oxide. The distribution of scandium in the bodies and the anti-ion bombarding property of the Sc-type cathode have been studied by SEM and In Situ AES. For bodies made by aqueous solution-solid doping method, Sc2O3 distributed uniformly in the body. This structure is beneficial for diffusion and supplement of scandate to the suface. In Situ AES ion bombarding experimental results show that this kind of body has better anti-ionbombing property at high temperature.

Abstract:As the cathode with the highest electron emission capability in the thermionic cathode, the scandate cathode has attracted more and more attention in recent years, especially the scandia doped tungsten matrix scandate cathode. Experimental studies show that scandia doped tungsten matrix scandate cathodes with submicron microstructures exhibit excellent emission capacity, and the pulse emission current density in the space-charge region can be over 35 A cm −2 at 850 °C b . In the direct current (DC) condition with temperature compensation, the emission current density could reach 25 A cm −2 at 850 °C b . The device lifetime is over 3700 h after operating at 950 °C b with the DC loading of 40 A cm −2 . The emission mechanism of the scandate cathode including the effect of the surface structure and composition on the work function of the cathode are systematically reviewed.

Abstract:In this paper, scandate doped pressed (SDP) cathodes were prepared by a new method of spray drying combined with two-step hydrogen reduction, instead of traditional mechanical mixing of scandium oxide and barium-calcium aluminates with tungsten. The microstructure, element distribution, and emission properties of the cathodes have been characterized by scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, and an emission test system, respectively.

Abstract:The emission performance and mechanism of Ba-W cathode coated with Sc film were studied. Results show that the cathode coated with Sc layer 200 nm in thickness shows better performance. After heat treatment at $\boldsymbol{1500 \ ^{\circ}} \mathbf{C}$ in hydrogen, the cathode could provide an emission current density of $\boldsymbol{21.07}\mathbf{A}/\mathbf{cm^{2}}$ at $\boldsymbol{1150\ ^{\circ}}\mathbf{C}_{\mathbf{b}}$ . The surface analysis shows that Sc is partially oxidized during heat treatment, indicating that oxidation improves performance. The experiment results are consistent with the DFT calculated results, where the work function of 25% O-25% Ba adsorbed on the Sc surface is the lowest, which is 1.4877 eV, 1.8228 eV and 1.8210 eV on the Sc (002), Sc (100) and Sc (101) respectively.

Abstract:The development of high current-density cathodes employing scandia-doped tungsten powders is reviewed in this paper. A matrix with a submicrometer microstructure characterized by uniformly distributed nanometer particles of scandia is believed to play a dominant role in the improved emission capability of these cathodes. Space-charge-limited current densities of over 30 A/cm2 at 850 degCb have been repeatedly obtained for many runs of cathodes fabricated from the different batches of scandia-doped tungsten powders. A lifetime of over 10000 h at 950-degCb 2-A/cm2 dc loading in a test diode has been achieved. Periodic high current-density pulse testing was also carried out during the test. The performance for both the dc and pulsed current densities remained stable. When tested at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in a cathode life test vehicle with a Pierce gun configuration, the cathode operated for 500 h at 1170 degC b, with a pulsed loading of 100 A/cm2 and with less than 5% degradation in current density. The outstanding performance of these cathodes is attributed to a surface multilayer of Ba-Sc-O of about 100-nm thickness that uniformly covers the W grains with nanometer-size particles distributed on the growth steps. The layer is formed after proper activation by diffusion of free or ionic Sc together with Ba and O from the interior of the cathode to its surface. This highly mobile, free, or ionic Sc is liberated from constituents produced during impregnation and activation by reactions between the matrix materials and impregnants

Abstract:One of the important issues with the scandate cathode is the mechanism by which Sc works on the cathode surface. A surface Sc-rich dispenser cathode was prepared via the vacuum evaporation method to clarify the role of Sc in the cathode performance. The XPS results indicate that the surface chemical state of Sc on the surface after activation is consists of Sc-0 and Sc epsilon+ (0<epsilon<3). Furthermore, the adsorption energy, the work function, charge density difference, polarization effect and dipole moment of the Ba-x-O-y adsorbed on the Sc surface were calculated by means of first-principles calculations. The results show that the work function of the Bax-Oy dipole adsorbed on the Sc is 1.9-2.8 eV with the average value of 2.262 eV, which is consistent with the experimentally measured result. The work function of Ba-x-O-y adsorbed Sc (002) gets to the lowest at a coverage of 25 %O-25 % Ba. The change of dipole moment due to polarization and charge transfer in the adsorbed layer could affect the work function.

Abstract:A new kind of pressed scandate dispenser cathode was fabricated by liquid-liquid doping using a Sol-Gel technique. The cathode exhibits high emission property. i.e., the emission current density reached 47 A/cm2 at 850degCb with lower Richardson work function about 1.1-1.2 eV and Ba:Sc:O concentration ratio at the cathode surface was 1.6:1:2.0.

Abstract:The Scandia doped thermionic cathodes have received great attention owing to their high electron emission density in past two decades. Here, Scandia doped Re3W matrix scandate (RS) cathodes are fabricated by using Sc2O3 doped Re3W powders that prepared by spray drying method. The micromorphology, surface composition and chemical states of RS cathode are investigated with various modern technologies. It reveals that the reduction temperature of RS powders is dramatically increased by Sc2O3. On the surface of RS cathode, a certain amount of Sc2O3 nanoparticles and barium salt submicron particles are observed. According to the in situ Auger electron spectroscopy analysis, the concentration ratio of Ba:Sc:O is determined to be 2.9:1.1:2.7. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data indicates that low oxidation state of Sc is clearly observed in scandate cathodes. The high atomic ratio of Ba on RS cathode surface is suggested due to the high adsorption of Re3W to Ba. Moreover, RS cathode shows better adsorption to Sc by comparison with conventional tungsten matrix scandate cathode. For RS cathode, the main depletion of Sc is suggested to -OSc desorbing from RS cathode surface. RS cathode is expected to be an impressive thermionic cathode with good emission properties and ion anti-bombarding insensitivity. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To find the changes of surface compositions during life time of the Scandia-doped impregnated dispenser cathodes, two cathodes have been tested at an activation temperature of 1150°CB-Mo and an operation temperature of 1000°CB-Mo , respectively, in an AES system up to more than 7,000 hours. Surface compositions were monitored in-situ at intervals. The tested results have been reported and discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Development and improvement of scandate-type cathode have been continuously in progress in last decade and recent years. Required by some new devices such as high power microwave sources, cathodes with current density of up to 100A/cm/sup 2/ at low pulse durations and relevant lifetime are being developed. Scandate type cathode has shown the emission capability of approaching to 100A/cm/sup 2/ or even more. Uniformization in emission, robustness in real environment and reproducibility in manufacturing process may be the major problems for their practical use. Based on previous study, we further developed the Scandia doping technique and cathode fabrication process. Cathodes with sub-micron structure Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/ doped porous tungsten bodies have been successfully fabricated. Repeatable high emission properties were also verified for different batches of cathodes.

Abstract:Scandia doped dispenser cathodes were prepared by powder metallurgy method using mixed powder of scandia doped tungsten, barium–calcium aluminates obtained by sol–gel method. The scanning electron microscope observation results indicate that the cathode has submicron quasi–spherical tungsten grains structure with homogeneous distribution of Sc2O3 and barium–calcium aluminates which dispersed over and among W grains. The cathode exhibits good emission property, i.e. the current density of this cathode can reach more than 40A/cm² at 850°Cb. The cathode has low work function of 1.43 eV. Active substance of Sc, Ba and O diffuse from the inner part of cathode to the surface to form a Ba–Sc–O multilayer having certain ratios of Ba:Sc:O which contains much more Ba than normal dispenser cathode at the surface of Sc2O3–W matrix cathode during the activation period. This active–multi–layer is considered to be responsible for copious emission capability.

Abstract:Different characteristic features of scandate-type cathode with sub-micron structure Sc2O3 doped tungsten bodies, were investigated. The scandia doped tungsten powders were made by using liquid-solid doping and liquid-liquid doping. The doped tungsten powders were pressed and sintered into porous bodies and then impregnated with 411 barium calcium aluminates. The result shows that improved pressing, sintering and impregnating procedures help to obtain scandate cathodes with sub-micron framework porous bodies.

Abstract:Although thermionic emission has been studied for more than 100 years, recent interest in novel electron devices for military and civilian use has led to a surge in demand for cathodes with enhanced emission properties (e.g. higher current density, more uniform emission, lower operating temperatures, or extended in-service longevity). Sc-containing "scandate" cathodes have been widely reported to exhibit superior emission properties compared to previous-generation thermionic cathodes, including oxide, B-, and M-type cathodes. Despite extensive study spanning several decades, the mechanism by which the addition of Sc enhances cathode emission remains ambiguous, and certain limitations -- non-uniform emission, low reproducibility, inconsistent longevity -- continue to prevent widespread commercial integration of scandate cathodes into electron devices. This review attempts to survey the literature to-date addressing the fabrication, structure, and properties of scandate cathodes, with particular attention to studies addressing the role of Sc in enhancing emission.

Abstract:We systematically investigated scandium oxide-doped (and with small amount of rhenium-doped) tungsten bodies for Scandate-type cathodes. Homogeneous microstructure and uniform distribution of scandia were found in these bodies. Sub-micron granular porous bodies with greatly uniformly dispersed scandia are obtained by sintering Sc2O3 and Re doped tungsten powder. Such bodies are thought to be beneficial for emission uniformity.For Scandate-type cathodes with such bodies, a slight decrease of scandia was observed by "in situ" AES analysis after ion sputtering, but it recovers completely on reheating. It is assumed that film-like Sc2O3 coating over tungsten grains but leaving porous areas for diffusion of barium to the surface leads to good emission properties and high resistance to ion bombardment. Reprocucibility has been proved for the body manufactering process. This offers the possibility of improving the performance of these cathodes in applications such as CRT's. Abstract:The emission mechanism of scandia-doped dispenser (SDD) cathodes is characterized based on systematic investigation of microstructure, surface behavior, evaporation, and emission. High current density SDD cathodes have been developed in recent years to meet the requirements of advanced vacuum electron devices. Space charge limited current densities of over 100 A/cm2 have been reliably reached at a temperature of 950 °Cb. SDD cathodes are composed of a tungsten matrix with submicron structure and uniformly dispersed materials containing Sc, Ba, Ca, Al, and O as nanosized particulates in the matrix. The authors conclude that the copious electron emission from this cathode type results from a layer of Ba–Sc–O on W formed after activation on top of the matrix. This layer is about 100 nm thick and maintains a stable composition over its lifespan. Its emission can be explained in terms of a semiconductor layer with characteristics that differ from a metal-like emission model. The Ba–Sc–O layer is formed by codiffusion of Sc, Ba, and O (generated inside the W-matrix) to the surface of the W-matrix during activation. Furthermore, this layer guarantees a low evaporation rate of emission-relevant materials and thus enables a longer lifespan.
