Abstract:Steel structures are susceptible to corrosion damage over the service life, which can significantly compromise the mechanical properties and structural integrity. Understanding the cyclic mechanical properties of high-strength steel (HSS) after corrosion damage is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of building structures. In this study, experimental and numerical analysis were conducted to investigate the cyclic mechanical properties of HSS base steel and butt weld specimens after corrosion damage. Accelerated corrosion tests were performed at first to induce various degrees of corrosion damage on HSS base steel and butt weld specimens, the corrosion morphology development of steel under different corrosion degrees was investigated. In order to evaluate the hysteretic performance of the corroded steels, cyclic loading tests were conducted under two typical loading protocols. The results revealed a significant reduction in energy dissipation and ultimate stress of the corroded HSS compared to the pristine material. Based on the experimental test results, the constitutive model parameters of HSS after corrosion were calibrated. Additionally, the FEM analysis was employed to predict the cyclic behavior of the corroded steel specimens, and the results were in good agreement with the experimental results. It is proved that the stress correction method can accurately capture the cyclic mechanical properties of HSS specimens after corrosion.
