Abstract:The problem of catheters associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) is one main reason for the high incidence of complications in patients, and anti-infection modification of catheters is an important way to prevent and reduce infections at an early stage. Based on the pathogenesis of CAUTIs by bacterial biofilm formation, urinary catheters can achieve efficient and long-lasting anti-infective performance through anti-adhesion and antibacterial modification strategies, as well as a combination of these two strategies. This paper introduces the research progress of anti-infective urinary catheters, including the hydrophilic modified anti-adhesive urinary catheters using hydrogels, nonionic hydrophilic polymers, and zwitterionic polymers, the anti-adhesive urinary catheters imitating the surface topography of lotus leaves and sharks, the antibacterial urinary catheters modified with antibiotics, silver, bacteriophages, antibacterial peptides, antibacterial enzymes, nitric oxide and carbon nanomaterials, and urinary catheters with the dual functions of anti-adhesion and antibacterial. By summarizing the advantages and disadvantages of various modified catheters in in vitro and in vivo tests and clinical applications, this paper focuses on the current progress of catheters with effective inhibition of CAUTIs, as well as the latest mechanism of long-lasting anti-infective catheters, to provide a theoretical basis for the development of catheters for clinical applications.
