Abstract:We propose a design for a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF), with a quasi-elliptical core region stacked by modified periodic capillary tubes. This type of HC-PBF possesses birefringence > 4.6×10-4 in the wavelength range of 1.46-1.59 μm, and a low confinement loss of <; 0.02 dB/m, while maintaining single-mode operation.

Abstract:Abstract A photonic crystal fiber in square lattice architecture is numerically investigated and proposed for broadband dispersion compensation in optical transmission system. Simulation results reveal that it is possible to obtain an ultra-high negative dispersion of about −571.7 to −1889.7 (ps/nm.km) in the wavelength range of 1340 nm to 1640 nm. Experimentally it is demonstrated that the design fiber covers a high birefringence of order 4.74×10 ‒3 at the wavelength of 1550 nm. Here, numerical investigation of guiding properties and geometrical properties of the proposed PCF are conducted using the finite element method (FEM) with perfectly match layers. Moreover, it is established more firmly that the proposed fiber successfully compensates the chromatic dispersion of standard single mode in entire band of interest. Our result is attractive due to successfully achieve ultra-high negative dispersion that is more promisor than the prior best results.

Abstract:We proposed a novel photonic crystal fiber composed of a double-cladding square lattice that could be used in dual-band, Er and Tm optical gain bands, simultaneously supporting a large negative dispersion and a high birefringence. We theoretically investigated the light guiding property through the proposed photonic crystal fiber by using a vectorial finite-element method with a perfectly matched layer. By optimizing the structural parameters, we obtained an ultra-large negative dispersion of 20,186 ps(nmkm) and a very high birefringence of 9.27 103 at the wavelength of 1.55 m in the Er gain band and a very large negative dispersion of 8,067 ps(nmkm) and a high birefringence of 1.0 103 at the wavelength of 1.87 m in the Tm band. We further discussed the roles of waveguide parameters on the chromatic dispersion, its slope, and the birefringence of the fiber as well as the mode field diameter. The proposed fiber could be directly applied for dual-band dispersion and polarization control in fiber laser cavities as well as optical communications and sensors in the dual bands.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:By employing germanium up-doped and fluorine/boron down-doped cylindrical inclusions instead of air-holes in pure silica, a novel kind of broadband dual concentric core dispersion compensating photonic crystal fiber (DCC-DCPCF) with all solid structure and low index difference is proposed. By analyzing the kappa value’s influences on the dispersion compensating behavior, it is found that the DCC-DCPCF whose kappa curve intersects twice with that of compensated fiber in the targeted band is most preferable for ultra-broadband dispersion compensation. The bandwidth of the DCC-DCPCF can be readily managed by tuning the position and the interval of the two kappa matched wavelength. Following the design procedure of broadband DCC-DCPCF given in this paper, an all solid DCC-DCPCF aims at compensating the accumulated dispersion of Corning SMF28 fiber in entire S+C band are designed. Negative dispersion ranging from −183 to −281 ps/(nmkm) in S+C bands is achieved with the refractive index differences between matrical material and cylindrical inclusions no more than 0.03. Numerical results show that the DCC-DCPCF can compensate 15.43 times its length of Corning SMF28 fiber with small residual dispersion in the range of ±0.15 ps/(nmkm). The calculated effective mode area is 16.01μm2 at 1550 nm, corresponding to a coupling loss of 1.35 dB to the Corning SMF28 fiber, the confinement loss and bending loss with 1 cm bending radius less than 0.058 dB/km and 0.315 dB/km at 1550 nm, respectively.

Abstract:This paper presents a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with heptagonal core and heptagonal cladding for dispersion compensation. Different optical properties of the suggested PCF are explored using the finite element method (FEM). The proposed dispersion compensating PCF (DC-PCF) exhibits a very large negative chromatic dispersion of $-940 ps/(nm-km)$ at $1550 nm$ wavelength. The overall dispersion of the DC-PCF is $-420.1$ to $-1160 ps/(nm-km)$ in the wavelength range of $1390$ to $1700 nm$ ($310 nm$ band). The relative dispersion slope is $0.0036 nm^{-1}$ which is a perfect match with the standard single mode fibers. Moreover, it exhibits a very low confinement loss of about $10^{-5} dB/km$ and low nonlinearity of $45 W^{-1}km^{-1}$ at $1550 nm$ wavelength. Since the suggested DC-PCF has very high negative dispersion and low nonlinearity, it can be a potential candidate for broadband dispersion compensation in fiber-optic communication.

Abstract:A pure silica microstructured optical fiber(MOF) with seven dual cores is designed for chromatic dispersion compensation by a finite difference frequency domain(FDFD) method with a perfect matched layer(PML) boundary condition. The multi-core structure fiber is presented for the first time. The negative chromatic dispersion peak value of the designed microstructured fiber is -4500ps/nm.km and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) is evaluated at 12nm. Furthermore the effective area of the inner core fundamental mode can reach 65mm2 at 1550nm wavelength, which is three times that of a conventional dispersion compensating fiber (DCF).

Abstract:Four non-zero-dispersion-shifted fibers with almost the same large effective area (A(eff)) and optimized dispersion properties are realized by novel index profile designing and modified vapor axial deposition and modified chemical vapor deposition processes. An Aeff of greater than 71 mu m(2) is obtained for the designed fibers. Three of the developed fibers with positive dispersion are improved by reducing the 1550 nm dispersion slope from 0.072 ps/nm(2)/km to 0.063 ps/nm(2)/km or 0.05 p/nm(2)/km, increasing the 1550 nm dispersion from 4.972 ps/nm/km to 5.679 ps/nm/km or 7.776 ps/nm/km, and shifting the zero-dispersion wavelength from 1500 nm to 1450nm. One of these fibers is in good agreement with G655D and G. 656 fibers simultaneously, and another one with G655E and G. 656 fibers; both fibers are beneficial to high-bit long-haul dense wavelength division multiplexing systems over S-, C-, and L-bands. The fourth developed fiber with negative dispersion is also improved by reducing the 1550 nm dispersion slope from 0.12 ps/nm(2)/km to 0.085 ps/nm(2)/km, increasing the 1550 nm dispersion from -4 ps/nm/km to -6.016 ps/nm/km, providing facilities for a submarine transmission system. Experimental measurements indicate that the developed fibers all have excellent optical transmission and good macrobending and splice performances. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Based on the modified dual core structure, three kinds of special photonic crystal fibers are presented, which are extremely large negative dispersion, super-broad bond, and large area made field dispersion-compensating photonic crystal fibers (DCPCF). For extremely large negative dispersion DCPCF, the peak of negative dispersion reaches -5.9 x 10(4) ps/(mn km). Super-broad bond DCPCF has broadband large negative dispersion and the dispersion value varies linearly from -380 ps/(nm km) to -420 ps/(nm km) in the C band. The designed large area made field DCPCF has a peak dispersion of -1203 ps/(nm km) with the inner core mode area of 47 mu m(2) and outer core mode area of 835 mu m(2). Furthermore, for the large area mode field DCPCF, the experimental result is also obtained. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:We propose a high-birefringence twin-core hollow optical fiber, which is composed of two rectangular Ge-doped cores, annular silica cladding, and a large central air hole. The rectangular cores are weakly coupled with the air hole and arranged in the same silica cladding. The mode birefringence in single-mode operation of 1.55 mu m reaches 2.48 x 10(-4), which is comparable with traditional panda polarization maintaining fiber. By introducing an extra stress zone, the mode birefringence can be improved further by two times. The high birefringence of the twin-core hollow fiber is induced by strong asymmetry of the waveguide structure. The characteristics of the guiding mode, birefringence, and evanescent field are analyzed numerically by full-vector finite-element method. The effect of geometric and material parameters is discussed. The proposed scheme of twin-core hollow fiber can overcome the polarization fading effect and signal cross talk occurring in traditional multicore fibers and is much desirable for improving the performance of in-fiber integrated interferometers and biochemical sensors. Novel tapered optical fiber coupler

Abstract:A novel tapered optical fiber coupler was proposed with its waveguide refractive index gradually changing, induced by germanium defects under the UV irradiation. The refractive index change of 6*10-3 in the single-mode communication fiber was achieved in the experiment by means of pre-treating the fiber in high pressure and low temperature environment. A particular index taper profile function was obtained by delicately controlling the exposure conditions, and the mode field radius (MFR) was reduced from 4.8 to 3.2 micrometer in single mode fibers. The coupled wave theory analysis shows that the tapered coupler is capable of excellent transmission for fundamental mode with very small model conversions.

Abstract:In this work, we propose and design a germanium-doped highly dispersive coupled ring-core fiber (HD-CRF) with two concentric high-index rings for vortex modes. By using a full-vector finite-element method (FEM), we show that the most dispersive wavelength and its corresponding dispersion value of the proposed CRF can be adjusted and optimized by properly selecting the fiber geometrical parameters. The OAM1,1 mode supported in the designed CRF can achieve an extremely negative chromatic dispersion (CD) as low as 86,288 ps(nmkm) at 1535.4 nm. The dispersion properties of the others vortex modes (TE0,1 and TM0,1) further exhibit that our proposed CRF is promising for various CD-related applications of the complex vortex modes in the optical fiber. Furthermore, by varying the mole fraction of GeO2 and fiber structure parameters, the most dispersive wavelength of the OAM1,1 mode can be flexibly controlled over a 449.8-nm wide spectral range around 37,126 ps(nmkm) with <2.8 CD variation.

Abstract:The material dispersion of a tappered fiber is described by Sellmeier's equation. The dependence of refractive index on wavelength kind doping concentration is discussed. A fie-Ne laser with the output wavelength of 632.8 nm is used in the experiment. When the cutoff frequency of the fiber is less than the laser frequency, the guiding modes of a single-mode fiber (at 1550 nm) are investigated. The results show that the original single-mode fiber becomes a multi-mode waveguide. The propagation and mode coupling of the light, in the taper region are analyzed. By controlling the taper end size of the fiber, the unique tapered fiber call convert a multi-mode beam into a single-mode one.

Abstract:A two-dimensional tapered fiber core mimicking a commonly used tapered fiber coupler is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in a piece of single-mode fiber (SMF) for whispering gallery mode (WGM) excitation. Tapering the fiber core with femtosecond laser ablation can simultaneously enhance the evanescent field and decrease the effective refractive index of the core mode, which lowers the phase mismatch between the core mode and the WGM in a spherical cavity with a diameter less than the fiber cladding radius. Experimental results show that symmetric Lorentzian dip with a quality factor (Q-factor) of $3.6 imes 10 ^{3}$ and asymmetric Fano-like lineshape can be achieved. Such a tapered fiber core provides an effective coupling method for a single WGM based photonic device or WGM array-based lab in-fiber due to its inherent compatibility with fiber optic hardware, high integration, and robustness.

Abstract:In order to compensate the dispersion accumulated in a single mode fiber (SMF) for higher communication capacity, a simplified dispersion-compensation microstructure fiber (DC-MSF) with seven cores is proposed in this paper. The fiber's cladding is made of pure silica without air holes, and its outer cores are composed of six germanium up-doped cylinders, which has the advantage of simple structure. The finite element method (FEM) and beam propagation method (BPM) are used to study the properties of the fiber, and the relationship between the structural parameters of the fiber and the dispersion, as well as the phase matching wavelength, is obtained. By optimizing the structural parameters of the fiber, the dispersion of the fiber can reach −5 291.47 ps·nm −1 ·km −1 at 1 550 nm, and the coupling loss to the conventional single-mode fiber is only 0.137 dB. Compared with the conventional dispersion-compensation fiber, the fiber has lots of advantages, such as single mode transmission, easy to fabricate and low coupling loss with traditional SMF, etc.

Abstract:In this paper, a Ge-doping square solid-core photonic bandgap (PBG) fiber is proposed and the effective index of defect mode is investigated. Simulations show that, at the starting wavelength of the defect mode, n/sub effd/ (the effective index of defect mode) changes rapidly due to the PBG effect, which induces large negative dispersion in fiber. This mechanism is different from the mode coupling case in dual-core concentric fibers, and the dispersion characteristic is more robust to structural deviations.
Novel fiber taper for efficient optical interconnection

Abstract:The optical fiber taper coupling with its refractive index gradually changing along its propagation axis caused by photosensitivity was analyzed theoretically. The numerical results for two different taper shapes in step-index fiber show that the coupling of fundamental mode to the reflected mode and to high-order mode are relatively small provided the change is gradual. The experiment demonstrates that this index taper is suitable for interconnection of two dissimilar fibers. It may also be applicable for coupling of laser sources or integrated waveguides to fibers.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams, featuring with unique spatial field distributions, have been extensively investigated and applied into a wide range of fields. In most applications, OAM beams covering a certain frequency band are usually required, and supercontinuum (SC) generation is a feasible method to provide broadband OAM source. As a short pulse is incident into a specially designed optical fiber with flat dispersion over broad bandwidth, a broadband SC could be generated along propagation due to the nonlinear spectral broadening. In this work, we propose a dual concentric-ring-core fiber design to achieve near-zero and flat dispersion profile over 3007-nm wavelength range with four zero-dispersion wavelengths for the OAM mode. The precise position of the zero-dispersion wavelengths can be tailored by varying the structural variables and the germanium-doped concentration of the silica-based fiber. The performance of the spectral broadening in terms of flatness and bandwidth is investigated under different input pulse and propagation conditions. Simulation results depict that the OAM3,1 mode supercontinuum spectrum can achieve beyond three-octave spanning from 445 to 3942 nm at 40 dB level by pumping a 50-fs 600-kW Gaussian pulse at the central wavelength of 1900 nm into a 2-mm designed fiber. By further optimizing the proposed fiber structure for the OAM1,1 mode with <60 ps(nmkm) dispersion variation over a 3210-nm bandwidth, the generated supercontinuum can cover nearly three octaves.
