Abstract:Over the past decade, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry has experienced significant transformations driven by project commitments and increased demand in Asian and European markets. This study investigates the multifractal characteristics of LNG spot freight rates, focusing on 160,000 cubic meter vessels, using multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis and multifractal detrending moving average techniques. The analysis spans from December 17th, 2010, to January 12th, 2024, covering seasonal fluctuations and their impact on the multifractal dynamics of LNG spot freight rates. Our findings reveal that LNG spot freight rates exhibit significant multifractal properties, influenced by seasonal patterns and external factors such as geopolitical events and the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the study demonstrates that incorporating multifractal features into long short-term memory models improves the accuracy of forecasting the Weekly Henry Hub Natural Gas Spot Price. These insights provide valuable tools for stakeholders in the LNG industry, enabling better understanding and strategic navigation of the complex LNG market dynamics.
