Abstract:Comprehending the adsorption mechanism and diffusion behavior of CO2 and CH4 within shale formations holds paramount importance in the field of CH4 capture and CO2 storage. This work integrates Grand Canonical Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics, and density functional theory methods to systematically investigate the adsorption and diffusion characteristics of CO2 and CH4 in quartz nanopores. The adsorption capacity, density profile, and isosteric heat of CO2 and CH4 in dry and hydrous quartz nanopores are calculated. The findings indicate that the adsorption capacity of CO2 and CH4 is positively correlated with pressure and negatively correlated with temperature. CO2 exhibits a stronger adsorption capacity compared to CH4. The adsorption capacity of CO2 and CH4 in hydrous quartz nanopores is negatively correlated with water content. The calculation results of electronic property further reveal the reason why H2O affects the adsorption mechanism. The mean square displacement results indicate a negative influence of pressure and water content on the diffusion behavior of CO2 and CH4. With an increase of water content, the diffusion space of CO2 and CH4 is limited. The outcomes of this research can furnish theoretical insights in the fields of CH4 capture and CO2 storage.
