Abstract:Providing continuous bandwidth over several tens of $\mathbf{G H z}$, Terahertz ($\mathbf{T H z}$) inter-satellite links (ISL) hold great promise for enabling high-speed global coverage and low-latency communication. Since the spatial multiplexing gain cannot be obtained through multipath in space, the orbital angular momentum (OAM), which provides additional degrees of freedom (DoFs), can enhance the spectral efficiency and capacity of THz ISL. However, the dynamic motion of transceivers in THz ISL leads to the beam deviation, which induces undesired OAM mode transition and results in inter-channel interference (ICI). The ICI induced by beam deviation can decrease the capacity of OAM-based THz ISL. In this paper, a channel model for THz OAM beams with beam deviation is proposed. Specifically, electric fields of different OAM modes with beam deviation are deduced, based on which the intended signal and interference signals are modeled by mode composition. Based on this model, the interference power and the capacity of OAM-based THz ISL are analyzed to quantitatively characterize the influence of the beam deviation for $\mathbf{T H z}$ ISL. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the capacity of OAM-based THz ISL first increases and then decreases with the growing deviation. With proper deviation, the implementation of OAM technology can provide higher capacity up to twice that of THz ISL without OAM.
