Abstract:Lightning strikes are one of the main factors that limit the usage of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in aircraft. There is a lack of quantitative experimental studies on the mechanical effects in the lightning damage analysis of CFRP. In this paper, a lightning mechanical impact measurement device was designed and used for measuring the mechanical impact loads (MILs) on unidirectional CFRP laminates subjected to impulse lightning current A component. The results reveal that the peak value of MILs grows exponentially with the peak lightning current. At 97.2 kA peak lightning current, a visible pit appeared on the bottom plate of the shielding box (a high-strength aluminum alloy with a thickness of 2 mm). The pressure equation of MILs was derived and loaded on the mechanical damage model of CFRP laminates. Severe damage to CFRP occurred in response to MILs-150kA. Therefore, mechanical effects cannot be ignored in lightning damage analysis of composite materials.
