Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) MoB are considered to an alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) electrode materials due to large specific surface area, uniformly layered structure, and abundant active surfaces although some metal atoms are exposed to the surface. In the present contribution, we construct an asymmetric Janus MoB structure functionalized with bifunctional groups to improve the electrochemical performance, and the electronic, adsorption and diffusion properties of MoBXY are investigated by first-principles method. The results reveal that the diffusion barriers of Li ions on the surface of O and S are 0.38 and 0.36 eV, respectively, the values are significantly lower than 0.55 eV of initial MoB, which is conducive to rapid charge and discharge of the battery. The specific capacity is increased to 519 mAh/g compared with the original one, and the metal ions are evenly distributed on the electrode surface. Additionally, the open circuit voltage (OCV) is in the range of 0-1 V, preventing the formation of Li dendrites and ensuring the safety of the battery in operation. These properties are attributed to the functionalized Janus structure redistributing the surface charge of the material, resulting in an evenly uniform interaction force between the adsorbed atoms and the matrix, thereby improving the adsorption stability of lithium ions. In a nutshell, the study sheds light on the mechanism of energy storage performance toward O and S-functionalized MBene electrode materials on a microscopic scale, which lays the corresponding foundation for subsequent experimental preparation.
