Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate and compare EML- and DML-based optical interconnects with 106.25 Gbaud NRZ-OOK and PAM4 for computing applications. The results show that both transmitters can be used to enable optical-amplification-free transmissions with low-complexity DSP.

Abstract:With the progress of high-capacity radio access networks, ultra-dense small cells are rapidly being deployed in urban areas. As a result, the deployment of a large number of optical fibers in urban areas becomes a severe issue. In this Letter, we propose a hybrid fiber–terahertz (THz) mobile fronthaul system supporting flexible and high-order wireless signal transmission with the delta-sigma modulation. The photonic THz transmission is used as the seamless extension of fiber-based fronthaul in small cells. A 20-Gbit/s digital fiber–THz fronthaul system is experimentally demonstrated to validate the proposed scheme, with 10-km optical fiber transmission and 300-GHz wireless relay. Carrier aggregation of up to 10 40-MHz and 60-MHz 5G-new radio (5G-NR) channels at the radio carrier frequency of 3.9 GHz is reported. The design of quantization noise suppressed delta-sigma modulation enables the system to transmit orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation up to 16384 order quadrate amplitude modulation (QAM) mapping with the error vector magnitude (EVM) below 0.5%.

Abstract:Development of Data Center based computing technology require energy efficient high-speed transmission links. This leads to optical amplification-free intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) systems with low complexity equalization compliant with IEEE standardized electrical interfaces. Switching from on-off keying to multi-level pulse amplitude modulation would allow to reduce lane count for next generation Ethernet interfaces. We characterize 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying, 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links using two integrated transmitters: O-band directly modulated laser and C-band externally modulated laser. Simple feed forward or decision feedback equalizer is used. We demonstrate 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying links operating without forward error correction for both transmitters. We also show 106.25 Gbaud 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links with performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error threshold of 4.5 x 10(-3). Furthermore, for EML-based transmitter we achieve 106.25 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation performance below KP-FEC threshold of 2.2 x 10(-4). That shows that we can use optics to support (2x)100 Gbps Ethernet on single lambda at expense of simple forward error correction.

Abstract:We report ultrahigh speed 106GBaud (200G PAM4) electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) for 800G and 1.6T optical transmission. Four CWDM EMLs of 1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331nm in 800G FR4 optical transceivers show clear eye diagram after 2km. Our 106GBaud EMLs show high bandwidth, high extinction ratio, low threshold current and high power, making it a suitable source laser for 800G/1.6T and AI applications.

Abstract:We present a cost-effective 25-Gb/s electro-absorption modulator integrated laser (EML) transmitter optical sub-assembly (TOSA) using all-in-one flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) wiring and a metal optical bench (MOB). For a low cost and high bandwidth TOSA, internal and external wirings and feed-through of the TOSA to transmit radio-frequency (RF) signal are configured all-in-one using the FPCB. The FPCB is extended from an exterior of the TOSA package up to an EML chip inside the package through the slit formed on a rear sidewall of the package and die-bonded on the MOB. The EML TOSA shows a modulated output power of more than 3.5 dBm and a clear eye pattern with a dynamic extinction ratio of ~8.4 dB at a data rate of 25.78 Gb/s.

Abstract:For a future 5G Ethernet-based fronthaul architecture, 100G trunk lines of a transmission distance up to 10 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) in combination with cheap grey optics to daisy chain cell site network interfaces are a promising cost- and power-efficient solution. For such a scenario, different intensity modulation and direct detect (IMDD) Formats at a data rate of 112 Gb/s, namely Nyquist four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), discrete multi-tone Transmission (DMT) and partial-response (PR) PAM4 are experimentally investigated, using a low-cost electro-absorption modulated laser (EML), a 25G driver and current state-of-the-art high Speed 84 GS/s CMOS digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) test chips. Each modulation Format is optimized independently for the desired scenario and their digital signal processing (DSP) requirements are investigated. The performance of Nyquist PAM4 and PR PAM4 depend very much on the efficiency of pre- and post-equalization. We show the necessity for at least 11 FFE-taps for pre-emphasis and up to 41 FFE coefficients at the receiver side. In addition, PR PAM4 requires an MLSE with four states to decode the signal back to a PAM4 signal. On the contrary, bit- and power-loading (BL, PL) is crucial for DMT and an FFT length of at least 512 is necessary. With optimized parameters, all Modulation formats result in a very similar performances, demonstrating a transmission distance of up to 10 km over SSMF with bit error rates (BERs) below a FEC threshold of 4.4E-3, allowing error free transmission.

Abstract:By employing a dual-wavelength (2-) vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) directly encoded by novel quadrature amplitude modulation generalized frequency division multiplexing (QAM-GFDM) modulation schemes with optimized data capacity, a 28-GHz millimeter-wave-over-fiber (MMWoF) link is created for fusing the long-reach single-mode-fiber wired network and the beyond fifth generation (B5G) mobile wireless network without using any localized synthesizer and mixer at the remote receiver end. Detuning the k subcarrier to 2 optimizes the electrical-to-electrical 5-GHz 64-QAM-GFDM link with an error vector magnitude (EVM) of 3.04, a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 30.3 dB and a bit error ratio (BER) of 2.11013. By using this condition to perform the long-reach 50-km optical transmission, the 5-GHz 64-QAM GFDM carried by the 2- VCSEL exhibits an SNR of 23.8 dB, an EVM of 6.47 and a BER of 2.2104. By fixing the optimized k subcarriers, the maximal bandwidth and raw data rate of the 64-QAM-GFDM transmission can be achieved to 6.75 GHz and 40 Gbits, respectively. For the wireless transmission at the remote end, the photo-mixed MMW carrier at 28-GHz exhibits a peak power of 11.4 dBm and a carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) of 45 dB. After performing the self-heterodyne down-conversion via power envelope detection, the receiving data amplitude is improved from 26.2 to 132 mV with adding a 3-dB attenuator for impedance matching. Under the 2-m wireless transmission via horn antenna pair, the maximal bandwidth and data rate of the received 4-QAM GFDM data respectively achieve 2 GHz and 4 Gbits.

Abstract:A 10Gb/s transmitter module containing an electroabsorption modulator monolithically integrated with a distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser is fabricated using the identical epitaxial layer scheme. Gain-coupling mechanism is employed to improve the single mode yield of the DFB laser, while inductively coupled plasma dry etching technique is utilized to reduce the modulator capacitance. The integrated device exhibits a threshold current as low as 12mA and an extinction ratio over 15dB at -2V bias. The small signal modulation bandwidth is measured to be over 10GHz. The transmission experiment at 10Gb/s indicates a power penalty less than 1dB at a bit-error-rate of 10-12 after transmission through 35km single mode fiber.

Abstract:Front-haul is an important sub-system in 5G centralized, collaborative, cloud, and clean radio access network (C-RAN), which connects base stations and distributed units. However, it is still a challenge to achieve manageable cost-effective front-haul supporting 12-channel transmission over 10 km G.652.D fibre. Currently, a novel front-haul approach based on so-called medium wavelength-division multiplexing (MWDM) is in the process of standardization in various international organizations, such as ITU-T and O-RAN. In this article, we provide a tutorial that systematically overviews the semi-active WDM front-haul based on multi-carrier pilot tone operation, administration and maintenance (OAM), and MWDM. Firstly, the semi-active WDM architecture based on multi-carrier pilot-tone is introduced. Afterwards, the principle of 12-channel bidirectional MWDM system is discussed. The MWDM scheme is performed by shifting design parameters of the optical grate of the coarse WDM (CWDM) direct modulation laser (DML) at the blue side and the red side, respectively, which can reuse the low-cost and mature industry chain of 25-Gb/s 6-channel CWDM. Next, the architecture of centralized and software defined network (SDN)-based management and control system for semi-active WDM is also presented. Finally, real-time transmission of 300 Gb/s 12-channel MWDM-based semi-active system over 10-km are achieved in lab test and field trial, demonstrating the feasibility and performance of the MWDM-based semi-active solution. We believe that this work might greatly promote the practical applications of 5G C-RAN front-haul.

Abstract:Towards higher capacity for the next generation Ethernet in datacenters, transmitting high-baud-rate signal is necessary. This work presents a band-interleaving receiver with subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) signaling for systems with excessive transmitter bandwidth and severely limited receiver bandwidth. In the proposed scheme, an ultra-high-bandwidth SCM signal is divided into two sub-bands, and modulated onto the optical carrier through an external modulator. The two sub-bands of the SCM signal are extracted by a wavelength selective switch, and then detected by a direct detection (DD) receiver and a lite-coherent receiver, respectively. This approach halves the receiver-side bandwidth requirement. As a proof of concept, we experimentally achieve the transmission of a 100-GHz SCM QAM signal over 500-m single-mode optical fiber (SSMF), attaining a highest net data rate of 428 Gbps above the 0.8798 NGMI threshold. To our knowledge, this represents a successful demonstration of signal transmission with a Nyquist bandwidth of up to 100 GHz and a net data rate exceeding 400 Gbps per wavelength in a system with severely limited receiver bandwidth of about 61 GHz.
