Abstract:Converting organic solid biomass into biodegradable, recyclable UV shielding film with improved water vapor barrier and antimicrobial properties for packaging is a challenging task that can achieve environmental and energy sustainability. This study presents the construction of a biodegradable packaging material named PVA/pCAPE, inspired by the lignification process in nature. Through the in situ polymerization of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) within a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix, the film exhibited exceptional freshness preservation, antimicrobial properties, UV shielding effects, and recyclability. The homogeneously distributed polymerized CAPE (pCAPE) and the dense interfacial bonds significantly enhanced the surface hydrophobicity and reduced the water vapor transmission ratio (WVTR) to only 28.6 % of pure PVA film (18.90 g m(-2)h(-1) vs. 5.42 g m(-2)h(-1)). The PVA/pCAPE films also displayed resistance to Staphylococcus aureus, complete UV light shielding, and maintained high transparency. These films extended the shelf life of strawberries from 2 to 7 days at 40 degrees C and 50 % relative humidity (RH). The multiple intermolecular interactions between pCAPE and the matrix enhanced the strength and toughness even at high RH of 98 %. Furthermore, the films demonstrated recoverability, and the reprocessed films performed a reduced WVTR of 3.13 g m(-2)h(-1), high transparency of over 70 %, and further enhanced mechanical properties. This work provides a facile strategy to produce eco-friendly biodegradable films with exceptional water vapor barrier and mechanical performance for various potential applications.
