Abstract:Infectious diseases represent one of the major challenges in clinical treatment. In pursuit of efficient and affordable antimicrobial materials, natural biomass-derived products have attracted extensive research and industrial attention due to their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and intriguing antimicrobial properties. This review provides an in-depth exploration of the action mechanisms and applications of biomass-derived antimicrobial materials. Diverse bioactive components, including proteins, polysaccharides, antioxidants, and phenolic compounds, are employed to inhibit bacterial growth, reduce viral transmission, and prevent fungal infections via multiple mechanisms, e.g., adsorption on viruses, disruption of cell walls, and interference with cell metabolism. The widespread application and versatility of biomass-derived bioactives in the biomedical field not only provide novel strategies to treat clinical infections but also contribute to sustainable development and biomass waste reduction. However, further research is needed to address challenges in the standardization of production and stability of biomass-derived antimicrobial materials to ensure their sustainable clinical applications.
