Abstract:Assessing urban environments is crucial for promoting sustainable urban development. However, current studies often lack a dynamic processes-oriented perspective and are geographically limited. This study utilizes the Comprehensive Evaluation Index (CEI), derived from multi-source data, to evaluate the environmental conditions of the 36 Chinese metropolitan areas from 2000 to 2021 and captures spatiotemporal non-stationarity through trend analysis and the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm. The results indicate a tendency of deterioration followed by improvement in the urban environment, with an inflection point in 2013. Initially, the environmental conditions in the core areas lagged behind those in the expanded areas, but eventually, the core areas surpassed the expanded areas. The trajectory of environmental change displays regional variations and spatial clustering. The contribution of surface fine particulate matter began to decline around 2013, while land surface temperature and vegetation coverage emerged as the primary contributors. Our object-oriented management approach can provide directional guidance for future urban environmental management. This study contributes to promoting sustainable development.

Abstract:Human and natural ecosystems refer to human–social–economic subsystems and natural–ecological subsystems and their interactions. Understanding the interactions between human and natural ecosystems is essential for regional sustainability. However, the coupled human–nature ecosystem is usually highly heterogeneous and both spatially and temporally complex, so it is difficult to accurately identify and quantify the interaction between human and natural ecosystems at a large scale. This results in a poor understanding and evaluation of its impact on regional sustainability. Therefore, given the increasing interaction between humans and the natural ecosystem, our Special Issue collated 11 contributions from Asian scholars focusing on the latest research advances in remote sensing technologies and their application to observing, understanding, modeling, and explaining the interaction between human and natural ecosystems. This research involves the development of innovative methods, indicators, and frameworks implementing different perspectives and spatio-temporal scales, covering urban, arid, plateau, watershed, and marine regions in Asia and promoting the sustainable development of regional human and natural ecosystems.

Abstract:The natural environment is essential for human survival and development since it provides water resources, land resources, biological resources and climate resources etc. As a developing country, China has witnessed a significant change in the natural environment in recent decades; and therefore, monitoring and mastering the status of the environment is of great significance. Due to the characteristics of large-scale and dynamic observation, remote sensing technology has been an indispensable approach for environmental monitoring. This paper reviews the satellite resources, institutions and policies for environmental monitoring in China, and the advances in research and application of remote sensing from five aspects: ecological index retrieval, environmental monitoring in protected areas, rural areas, urban areas and mining areas. The remote sensing models and methods for various types of environmental monitoring, and the specific applications in China are comprehensively summarized. This paper also points out major challenges existing at the current stage: satellite sensor problems, integrated use challenges of datasets, uncertainty in the retrieval process of ecological variables, scaling effect problems, a low degree of automation, the weak ability of forecasting and comprehensive analysis, and a lack of computational power for massive datasets. Finally, the development trend and future directions are put forward to direct the research and application of environmental monitoring and protection in the new era.

Abstract:As global environmental challenges continue to escalate, remote sensing technology has become an indispensable tool for researching, monitoring, and managing these issues. This article aims to summarize the principles of various remote sensing technologies, their primary application areas, and their crucial role in ecological and environmental conservation for sustainable development. Remote sensing technology offers a diverse array of data from multiple sources and scales, facilitating the monitoring of natural resource changes, studying ecosystem health, and assessing the impact of human activities on the environment. In-depth exploration of the latest advancements and application cases in remote sensing includes: (1) Vegetation: Applications in vegetation monitoring encompass the use of technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing and laser radar (LiDAR) for monitoring forest health, vegetation cover, and changes. These applications support forest management and ecological research. (2) Water Bodies: Thermal infrared remote sensing and satellite remote sensing are utilized to monitor water quality, water level fluctuations, and aid in water resource management, addressing water resource challenges. (3) Soil: Remote sensing technology is employed in soil applications, utilizing multispectral and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques for soil property assessment, soil moisture analysis, and soil erosion prediction. These applications contribute to agricultural and land management decisions, and provide suitable remote sensing technologies for the current trends in the ecological field, serving as a reference for monitoring methods.
The Impact of Land-Use Change on the Ecological Environment Quality from the Perspective of Production-Living-ecological Space: A Case Study of the Northern Slope of Tianshan Mountains

Abstract:Elucidating the relationships between production-living-ecological space (PLES) and ecological environments can help identify new strategies to promote sustainable development. The northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains represents a typical complex ecosystem characterized by mountain-oasis-desert interactions in arid regions with prominent human-land conflicts and intricate ecological environments. Here, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variations in land use in the study area from the perspective of PLES. Based on moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, an improved remote sensing ecological index (IRSEI) suitable for arid areas was established to evaluate the eco-environment quality (EEQ) by introducing salinity and cleanliness indexes. A stepwise regression model was then used to identify and quantify the impact of the PLES transfer modes on EEQ. The results showed that: (1) The oasis area was dominated by agricultural production land, whereas the desert and alpine areas were dominated by other and pasture ecological lands, respectively. The oasis area primarily involved the conversion of pasture ecological land to agricultural production land, whereas the desert and alpine areas showed mutual transformation of ecological space. (2) The size relationship of the EEQ in each sub-region was alpine region (0.555) > oasis region (0.509) > desert region (0.424). The EEQ in the study area showed an overall upward trend but decreased in the alpine region. (3) Changes in the PLES and IRSEI primarily occurred in the oasis region. Among the 21 PLES transfer modes that affect EEQ, an increase in agricultural production land was the primary mode that enhanced IRSEI, whereas an increase in impervious surfaces significantly decreased IRSEI. The degree of influence was as follows: industrial and mining production (−0.594) > urban living (−0.462) > rural living land (−0.316). In addition, EEQ is also affected by the combined effects of climate, topography, and other factors. By proposing IRSEI, we highlight the impact of land-use transfer mode on ecological environment quality from the perspective of PLES, which can provide a reference for ecological environment evaluation in arid areas and is of great significance for land-use planning and ecological environment protection.

Abstract:The degree of human impact on the environment is closely related to social development. Due to the process of industrialization, economic and social development, and the intensification of human activities, cities are facing serious environmental pollution and ecosystem degradation, which threatens the normal metabolic function and coordinated development of urban ecosystem. These regional ecological and environmental problems seriously threaten the atmosphere, land, and water resources that people rely on for survival and cause great economic losses. The study of the relationship between urbanization and ecological environment is an important part of the study of global environmental change, which is of great significance for the sustainable development of cities and the harmonious development of human and nature. This paper studies the remote sensing image data and night lighting data in the region, and uses appropriate spatial analysis methods in ENVI and GIS to separate the main building areas in the urban center, and quantitatively analyzes the spatial characteristics and the morphological development of urban buildings. Based on GIS and remote sensing technology, combined with pressure state model and analytic hierarchy process, this paper establishes an index system for evaluating urban ecosystem health. Using the method of time, space, quantity, and order of ecological integration, this paper makes a spatial quantitative analysis of geography and obtains the indexes of population disturbance, land reclamation degree, and ecological elasticity. The quantitative measurement of urban population is carried out, and the ecological system, spatial distribution characteristics, and urban evolution law are obtained, as well as the strategies of urban ecosystem in the framework of multi-element communication mechanism.

This study analyses the application of remote sensing technologies in urban landscaping planning, transportation, and environmental protection. The combination of remote sensing and GIS technologies makes urban landscaping planning more accessible in urban landscaping planning. Usually, remote sensing provides satellite images, while the GIS processes the image and compares the target region for analysis. The combination method could predict urban green spaces. In urban transportation planning, remote sensing technology could combine with Artificial intelligence smart video technology to protect peoples safety in transportation, such as observing traffic violations by capturing videos or images and protecting traffic safety. In environmental protection, remote sensing could monitor the area change of wetlands and solve the natural disasters around the city. Abstract:Remote sensing imagery has been widely used in urban growth and environment analysis with many effective and advanced strategies being developed. However, most of these approaches are separated from each other. There is an urgent need to combine different modules into some practical processing chains. Firstly, we present a comprehensive analysis of key processing chains in applying remote sensing images to urban environment analysis from such aspects as Land Use/Land Cover (LULC), urban landscape ecology, Urban Heat Islands (UHIs), vegetation and water monitoring, change detection, urban ecological security assessment and urban environmental mapping. Secondly, an integrated system, namely Urban Environment Analysis System (UEAS), is implemented based on the aforementioned processing chains to analyze urban environment using multi-temporal and multi-source remotely sensed data. Several case studies are demonstrated to confirm the effectiveness of the integrated system and the combined processing chains. The contributions of this paper lie in introducing ensemble learning to urban environment remote sensing, combining remote sensing derived information with thematic models for urban environment assessment, and developing an integrated system for urban environment analysis.

Abstract:As the increasing pressure caused by climatic changes and human activities, the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems are undergoing dramatic changes.Understanding how ecosystem processes change at large spatial-temporal scales is crucial for dealing with the threats and challenges posed by global climate change.Traditional field survey method can obtain accurate plot-level ecosystem observations, but it is difficult to be used to address large-scale ecosystem patterns and processes because of spatial and temporal discontinuities.Compared to traditional field survey methods, remote sensing has the advantages of real-time acquisition, repeated monitoring and multi spatial-temporal scales, which can compensate for the shortcomings of traditional field observation methods.Remote sensing can be used to identify the type and characteristic of ground objects, and extract key ecosystem parameters, energy flow and material circulation through retrieving the information contained by electromagnetic signals.Remote sensing data have become an indispensable data source in ecological studies, especially at the ecosystem, landscape, regional or global scales.With the emergence of new remote sensing sensors (e.g., light detection and ranging, and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence) and near-surface remote sensing platforms (e.g., unmanned aerial vehicle and backpack), remote sensing is entering the three-dimensional era and the observation platform become more diverse.These three-dimensional, multi-source and time-series remote sensing data bring new opportunities to fully understand ecosystem processes across different spatial scales.This paper reviews the advances of the application of remote sensing in terrestrial ecosystem studies.Specifically, this study focuses on the derivation of biological factors from remote sensing data, including vegetation types, structures, functions and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems.We also summarize the current status of the remote

Abstract:The rapid pace of urbanization and industrialization has reshaped land use patterns globally, particularly within the interconnected domains of 'production, living, and ecological spaces' (PLES). Understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of these spaces is crucial for guiding sustainable development. Although a number of previous studies have explored aspects of their dynamics and driving factors, further investigation is needed to fully understand their long-term spatiotemporal evolution and the broader influences of socio-economic and environmental forces. This study aims to fill that important gap by leveraging advanced remote sensing techniques to analyze PLES transformations over a 30-year period. Using Henan Province, China, as a testbed, this study applies high-resolution Landsat data, land use transition matrices, dynamic degree analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and multiple linear regressions to uncover trends and underlying drivers. The results reveal a substantial reduction in production spaces by 3394.62 km2 steady growth in living spaces by 4459.41 km2 and complex, non-linear changes in ecological spaces, which decreased by 1067.43 km2. Key driving forces, such as economic growth, urbanization, and fiscal policies are identified and discussed. These insights provide a robust framework for sustainable land use planning, with broader implications for rapidly urbanizing regions worldwide.

The advent of satellite remote sensing monitoring (SRSM) has revolutionized traditional monitoring constraints, particularly limited spatial coverage and resolution. This innovation finds profound utility in quantifying land covers and air pollution data, casting new light on epidemiological and geographical investigations. This dynamic application reveals the intricate web connecting public health, environmental pollution, and the built environment. Objective: This comprehensive review navigates the evolving trajectory of SRSM technology, casting light on its role in addressing environmental and geographic health issues. The discussion hones in on how SRSM has recently magnified our understanding of the relationship between air pollutant exposure and population health. Additionally, this discourse delves into public health challenges stemming from shifts in urban morphology. Methods: Utilizing the strategic keywords "SRSM," "air pollutant health risk," and "built environment," an exhaustive search unfolded across prestigious databases including the China National Knowledge Network (CNKI), PubMed and Web of Science. The Citespace tool further unveiled interconnections among resultant articles and research trends. Results: Synthesizing insights from a myriad of articles spanning 1988 to 2023, our findings unveil how SRMS bridges gaps in ground-based monitoring through continuous spatial observations, empowering global air quality surveillance. High-resolution SRSM advances data precision, capturing multiple built environment impact factors. Its application to epidemiological health exposure holds promise as a pioneering tool for contemporary health research. Conclusion: This review underscores SRSM's pivotal role in enriching geographic health studies, particularly in atmospheric pollution domains. The study illuminates how SRSM overcomes spatial resolution and data loss hurdles, enriching environmental monitoring tools and datasets. The path forward envisions the integration of cutting-edge remote sensing technologies, novel explorations of urban-public health associations, and an enriched assessment of built environment characteristics on public well-being.
Applications of Multi-source Remote Sensing Information to Urban Environment Monitoring in Mining Industrial Cities

Abstract:Remote Sensing (RS) has been viewed as the one of the most effective tools for environment monitoring, urban resources and environment investigation, change detection and urban growth analysis in mining industrial cities. Firstly, the framework and structure of applying multi-source RS information to environment monitoring of mining industrial cities is proposed based on the general methodologies of RS applications and the characteristics of mining industrial cities. RS can be used to monitor land use/cover change, extract subsidence land because of underground mining, analyze the dynamic change and simulate the trends of mining industrial city growth, monitor the extension of mining contamination, analyze the impacts of mining to farmland and ground buildings, assess the feasibility and performance of land reclamation and ecological reconstruction, and so on. Land subsidence is a very serious environmental damage caused by mining, and that leads to more negative impacts to ecological system, even leads to geological disaster. Three methods to extract subsidence land from RS image: thematic information based on decision tree, object-oriented subsidence land extraction and target identification based on RS information, geographical data and domain knowledge are experimented. Multi-source and multi-temporal RS information fusion is used for environmental analysis in mining areas. By the fusion of Landsat TM and SAR image, both high spatial resolution and multi-spectral information can be integrated so high classification and target extraction accuracy can be got. IHS fusion algorithm is improved by considering the image content and adaptive IHS fusion is experimented. Multi-temporal RS information fusion is used for change detecting and dynamic monitoring. By the case study in Xuzhou city, it proves that remote sensing can play important roles in environmental analysis and assessment in mining industrial cities and serve as the efficient decision-making support tool f- or regional sustainable development.

Abstract:Abstract Accelerating process of urbanization has brought about a series of ecological and environmental problems. In this paper, vegetation index, humidity index, surface temperature, and building-bare soil index are used to quantitatively characterize the four ecological element indexes of greenness, humidity, heat and dryness. Through principal component analysis, a remote sensing ecological index model is established, and this article comparatively analyzes the remote sensing ecological index in 2014 and 2019 from the two dimensions of time and space. The results show that the ecological environment of Qingdao is partially optimized and improved but the overall trend is decreasing.

Synthetic Analysis of Urban Landscape Pattern and Environmental Impact Based on Remote Sensing

Abstract:Taking Xuzhou City as a case, the studies of landscape classification, pattern analysis and eco-environmental impacts evaluation are made using Landsat TM/ETM+ images in this paper. For this purpose, firstly urban landscape information is extracted from Landsat TM/ETM+ images using C5.0 decision tree classification method based on spectral features, texture features and shape information. The results prove that the classification accuracy can meet the requirements of landscape patterns analyzing and evaluating. Then according to classified images, urban landscape pattern is analyzed based transfer matrix and landscape pattern metrics at the scale of landscape and class. Finally, based on the analysis, urban landscape pattern impacts on environment are evaluated qualitatively from three angles: heterogeneity, fragmentation, and edge effect. The results, which indicate that the level of fragmentation, diversity and connectivity of Xuzhou landscape in 2005 is higher than in 1987, but the level of congregation in 2005 is lower than in 1987, can reflect the urban expansion and the change of landscape patterns effectively.

Abstract:Geo-spatial information science and technology is one of the most emerging fields of the progress of science and technology. With the Earth System as an important target, the development and integration of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, Satellite positioning and computer-network are providing an unique means for studying our Earth, especially for studying the harmony of between human and nature, the coordination among population, resources and environment as well as societal sustainable development. Based on the analysis of the development of spatial remote sensing information technology, the features of spatial information and its development, the relation between the earth observation and the human impact was analysed and also the strategic consideration of development of earth observing system as well as geo-spatial information technology in China was proposed.
