Abstract:The utilization of photocatalytic membranes represents a sustainable technology that effectively combines the benefits of photocatalysis and membrane separation. These membranes possess the ability to recycle powdered catalysts and mitigate membrane fouling, thereby exhibiting promising applications in the wastewater treatment. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging photocatalysts with favorable physicochemical properties, interfacial compatibility, and tunable performance, making them excellent materials for preparing photocatalytic membranes. In this review, strategies for modifying MOF photocatalysts were discussed to construct photocatalytic membranes with efficient processing performance. Methods for the preparation of MOF-based photocatalytic membranes in recent studies are presented, including crystalline growth, vacuum filtration, electrostatic spinning, and phase inversion. The application of MOF-based photocatalytic membranes in water treatment processes is outlined regarding contaminant removal and mitigation of membrane fouling while analyzing the underlying mechanism. Opportunities and challenges that may arise during further development are discussed to provide a theoretical basis for future research and practical applications of MOF-based photocatalytic membranes.
