Abstract:To improve the stability of microbial communities in the HAD system under mixotrophic conditions with low S2- loads, this study constructed the HAD granular sludge system by combining the advantages of granular sludge technology with high biomass retention, and then investigated the effects of various low S2- loads on the performance and functional bacterial genera of the system. Despite the dynamic changes in S2- load during the operation, the HAD system maintained TN and COD removal rates of over 86.3 +/- 2.5 % and 90.5 +/- 2.3 % under electron donor-deficient conditions, and 99.6 +/- 0.7 % and 92.1 +/- 2.5 % under electron donor-sufficient conditions. This indicates that the HAD granular sludge system achieves highly efficient synergistic denitrification capabilities under low S2- concentrations. During operation, the effect of reducing the influent S2- loads on the microbial structure of the system was mainly manifested by the decrease in the abundance of a-soNRB (Thiobacillus) and the dynamic change in the abundance of hNRB (Thauera, Leptothrix, Sphaerotilus, Dechloromonas). Moreover, Thauera sp. MZ1T and Dechloromonas agitata were able to use both organic carbon sources and S2- as electron donors for denitrification without effect of its abundances by the influent S2- load, implying the potential S2- degradation capacity of this HAD system even at lower S2- loads.
