Abstract:Guided-mode resonance (GMR) sensors are widely used as biosensors with the advantages of simple structure, easy detection schemes, high efficiency, and narrow linewidth. However, their applications are limited by their relatively low sensitivity (<200 nm/RIU) and in turn low figure of merit (FOM, <100 1/RIU). Many efforts have been made to enhance the sensitivity or FOM, separately. To enhance the sensitivity and FOM simultaneously for more sensitive sensing, we proposed a metal layer-assisted double-grating (MADG) structure with the evanescent field extending to the sensing region enabled by the metal reflector layer underneath the double-grating. The influence of structural parameters was systematically investigated. Bulk sensitivity of 550.0 nm/RIU and FOM of 1571.4 1/RIU were obtained after numerical optimization. Compared with a single-grating structure, the surface sensitivity of the double-grating structure for protein adsorption increases by a factor of 2.4 times. The as-proposed MADG has a great potential to be a biosensor with high sensitivity and high accuracy.
Exploiting Thin-Film Properties and Guided-Mode Resonance for Designing Ultrahigh-Figure-of-Merit Refractive Index Sensors

Abstract:Guided-mode resonance (GMR) gratings have emerged as a promising sensing technology, with a growing number of applications in diverse fields. This study aimed to identify the optimal design parameters of a simple-to-fabricate and high-performance one-dimensional GMR grating. The structural parameters of the GMR grating were optimized, and a high-refractive-index thin film was simulated on the grating surface, resulting in efficient confinement of the electric field energy within the waveguide. Numerical simulations demonstrated that the optimized GMR grating exhibited remarkable sensitivity (252 nm/RIU) and an extremely narrow full width at half maximum (2 × 10−4 nm), resulting in an ultra-high figure of merit (839,666) at an incident angle of 50°. This performance is several orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional GMR sensors. To broaden the scope of the study and to make it more relevant to practical applications, simulations were also conducted at incident angles of 60° and 70°. This holistic approach sought to develop a comprehensive understanding of the performance of the GMR-based sensor under diverse operational conditions.

Abstract:Nowdays, the study of measurement of the biological field focuses on the research of improving surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the fields of integration and detection sensitivity. We designed a kind of grating connected surface plasmon resonance sensor. Theoretically, we analyzed the wave vector and the effective refractive index relations with the diffraction grating structure. Then we obtained the nanoparticles enhancement SPR structure with a resolution 10 times higher than that of traditional SPR sensors. Also, we used the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis and simulation which showed that it was obvious with coupling effect by the nanoparticles enhancement SPR structure that the reflectance spectral bandwidth results validated the structure significantly which improved the sensitivity. Experimental results showed that the dynamic response of the designed sensor reached 10 −6 RIU (refractive index unit). This study has the certain significance to long-distance and special sensing applications.
Suspended Microracetrack Resonator with Lateral Sub-wavelength-Grating Metamaterial Cladding for Mid-infrared Sensing Applications

Abstract:A one-time etching suspended microracetrack resonator with lateral sub-wavelength-grating (SWG) metamaterial cladding is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated on commercial 340 nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform for mid-infrared (MIR) bio-chemical sensing applications. The suspended structure can offer a larger exposed area of waveguides with the testing chemicals as well as a decent sensitivity. And the one-time etching process also eases the fabrication. The suspended waveguide is optimized with a balance between propagation loss and the sensitivity. The suspended microracetrack resonator is experimentally measured at 2 μm wavelength and well fitted with an extinction ratio (ER) of 12.3 dB and a full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 0.12 nm, which corresponds to a quality factor (Q factor) of 16600. With the equivalent refractive index method and a specially developed numerical model, the expected sensitivities of fundamental TE and TM mode were calculated as 58 nm/RIU and 303 nm/RIU respectively. This one-time etching suspended microracetrack resonator shows great potential in MIR optical bio-chemical sensing applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a very strong magnetic resonance in metamaterials for high-performance sensing. The metamaterials comprise a periodic array of a pair of closely spaced metal nanodisks that are placed on metal substrate. The strong magnetic resonance is essentially an antisymmetric resonant mode resulting from the near-field plasmon hybridization within the pair of metal nanodisks. Because the magnetic resonance has great electromagnetic field enhancement, ultra-narrow bandwidth and nearly perfect absorption, the metamaterials have very high sensitivity (S = 991 nm/RIU, S*= 47/RIU) and figure of merit (FOM = 124, FOM* = 17 702), which may find potential applications in label-free biosensing. Abstract:This study aims to develop a refractive-index sensor operating in the visible region using an all-dielectric metasurface, which was chosen for its advantages of low optical loss and narrow spectral bandwidth, compared to those of conventional metallic metasurfaces. COMSOL software was utilized as a calculation tool to simulate the resonant properties of an all-dielectric metasurface composed of a circular nanohole-structured titanium oxide (TiO2) thin film, with the aim of enhancing the sensitivity of the refractive index for sensing targets. The simulation focused on finding the best geometrical conditions for the all-dielectric metasurface to achieve high sensitivity. Two resonance modes observed in this metasurface were considered: the quasi-bound-state-in-the-continuum (qBIC) mode and the perfect-reflection (PR) mode. The simulated results demonstrated that high sensitivities of 257 nm/RIU at the PR mode and 94 nm/RIU at the qBIC mode in the visible spectral range could be obtained by periodically constructing the metasurface with a unit cell having a lattice constant of 350 nm, a nanohole radius of 160 nm, and a nanohole depth of 250 nm. Furthermore, the study showed that the resonance mode that enabled high sensitivity was the PR mode, with a sensitivity nearly three times larger than that of the qBIC mode and the ability to reach the highest reflectance at the resonance wavelength. The optimized feature had the highest reflectance at a resonant wavelength of 570.19 nm, and although the quality factor was 25.50, these designed parameters were considered sufficient for developing a refractive index biosensor with high sensitivity and optical efficiency when operating in the visible spectral range.

Resonant Subwavelength and Nano-Scale Grating Structures for Biosensing Application: A Comparative Study

Abstract:Resonant-based sensors are attractive optical structures due to the easy detection of shifts in the resonance location in response to variations in the analyte refractive index (RI) in comparison to non-resonant-based sensors. In particular, due to the rapid progress of nanostructures fabrication methods, the manufacturing of subwavelength and nano-scale gratings in a large area and at a low cost has become possible. A comparative study is presented involving analysis and experimental work on several subwavelength and nanograting structures, highlighting their nano-scale features' high potential in biosensing applications, namely: (i) Thin dielectric grating on top of thin metal film (TDGTMF), which can support the excitation of extended surface plasmons (ESPs), guided mode resonance, or leaky mode; (ii) reflecting grating for conventional ESP resonance (ESPR) and cavity modes (CMs) excitation; (iii) thick dielectric resonant subwavelength grating exhibiting guided mode resonance (GMR) without a waveguide layer. Among the unique features, we highlight the following: (a) Self-referenced operation obtained using the TDGTMF geometry; (b) multimodal operation, including ESPR, CMs, and surface-enhanced spectroscopy using reflecting nanograting; (c) phase detection as a more sensitive approach in all cases, except the case of reflecting grating where phase detection is less sensitive than intensity or wavelength detection. Additionally, intensity and phase detection modes were experimentally demonstrated using off-the-shelf grating-based optical compact discs as a low-cost sensors available for use in a large area. Several flexible designs are proposed for sensing in the visible and infrared spectral ranges based on the mentioned geometries. In addition, enhanced penetration depth is also proposed for sensing large entities such as cells and bacteria using the TDGTMF geometry.
An All-Metal Metasurface for High-Efficiency Refractive Index Sensing Based on Reflection-Type Surface Lattice Resonance

Abstract:This paper reports an all-metal metasurface with reflection-type surface lattice resonance (SLR), which is more suitable for high-efficiency refractive index (RI) sensing than transmission-type SLR metasurfaces due to direct and strong light-matter interaction. The measured full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the SLR is 13.5 nm, keeping a balance between the noise immunity and sensing efficiency. Notably, the RI sensitivity is determined by the lattice period with regularity and controllability, which provides a theoretical guide to designing a sensor with a target sensitivity. Besides, the SLR phenomenon can also be realized by the different nanostructures and lattice arrays flexibly. This research can support diverse applications involving not only RI sensing but also nonlinear optics, nano-laser, etc.

Abstract:Dielectric grating-based sensors are usually based on the guided mode resonance (GMR) obtained using a thin planar waveguide layer (PWL) adjacent to a thin subwavelength grating layer. In this work, we present a detailed investigation of thick subwavelength dielectric grating structures that exhibit reflection resonances above a certain thickness without the need for the waveguide layer, showing great potential for applications in biosensing and tunable filtering. Analytic and numerical results are thoroughly discussed, as well as an experimental demonstration of the structure as a chemical sensor in the SWIR (short wave infrared) spectral range (1200–1800 nm). In comparison to the GMR structure with PWL, the thick grating structure has several unique properties: (i) It gives higher sensitivity when the spaces are filled, with the analyte peaking at certain space values due to an increase in the interaction volume between the analyte and the evanescent optical field between the grating lines; (ii) the TM (transverse magnetic) resonance, in certain cases, provides a better figure of merit; (iii) the sensitivity increases as the grating height increases; (iv) the prediction of the resonance locations based on the effective medium approximation does not give satisfactory results when the grating height is larger than a certain value, and the invalidity becomes more severe as the period increases; (v) a sudden increase in the Q-factor of the resonance occurs at a specific height value accompanied by the high local field enhancement (~103) characteristic of a nano-antenna type pattern. Rigorous numerical simulations of the field distribution are presented to explain the different observed phenomena.

Abstract:A metasurface in the metal-insulator-grating configuration is designed and optimised to support enhancement of coherent Raman signal of selected molecules orders of magnitude above the single-molecule detection threshold. The tunability is demonstrated by adjusting the structure to match selected Raman peaks of rhodamine, however, its spectral response is broad enough to cover a range of Raman shifts. Finally, the grating allows switching between distinct values of Raman shift with a single metasurface illuminated at different angles.

Abstract:In this study, a surface diffraction two-dimensional (2D) grating structure was placed on the topmost layer of distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) for biosensing. Bloch surface wave (BSW) resonance was realized by coupling a 2D subwavelength hole-array grating and could be excited at different locations: the surface of 2D-grating layer or the inter-face between the DBR and bio-solution. Material losses in the multilayer dielectric were measured to test the robustness of this scheme. Both the surface diffraction-grating BSW (DG-BSW) and the alternative guided grating-coupled BSW (GC-BSW) configuration showed markedly enhanced angular sensitivity compared to conventional prism-coupled schematics. Exciting these modes using a grating-coupling technique appears to yield different extreme sensitivity modes with a maximum of 1190°/RIU for DG-BSW and 2255°/RIU for GC-BSW. Refractive index sensors with a high figure of merit may be realized via such compact configurations.

Abstract:We present a novel design for an all-dielectric metasurface ultra-sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor, characterized by a high-quality factor (Q f ) and figure of merit (FOM). This design incorporates two high-order toroidal modes, including electric toroidal quadrupole ( ) and magnetic toroidal quadrupole ( ) based on quasi‐bound states in the continuum (q-BIC) resonances. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of switching between and through various symmetry-breaking mechanisms. To excite these high-order toroidal modes, we explored several symmetry-breaking strategies, including complex structural designs, symmetry disruption, and variations in the incident wave angle. Symmetry breaking in the structure induces new modes in the transmission spectrum, which are highly advantageous for sensing applications due to the presence of dark modes. The designed metasurface exhibits the capability to sense a broad range of RI in diverse environments, particularly in biochemical fields. Sensitivity (S) is significantly enhanced by the excitation of new resonance modes and adjustments in the incidence angle, increasing from 217 GHz/RIU in a symmetrical structure to 512.3 GHz/RIU for . The FOM improves from 197 RIU 1 to 8538 RIU − 1 for and 152,395 RIU − 1 for . Additionally, the Q f rises from 872 to 17,983 and 921,351 for and , respectively.

Triple frequency bands terahertz metasurface sensor based on EIT and BIC effects

Abstract:How to improve the sensitivity of terahertz wave metasurface biosensors has always been a research hotspot in the field of biosensors. In this article, we propose a well-shaped all dielectric metasurface, which can simultaneously excite electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) and bound states in the continuum (BIC) effects, achieving high sensitivity sensing at three frequency points. The maximum Q value of refractive index sensing is 69238, with a sensitivity of 535 GHz/RIU and the figure of merits (FoM) of 85468. Moreover, the structure exhibits EIT group delay effect, with a maximum group delay of 5.57ps. The results indicate that the well-shaped all dielectric metasurface enhances the interaction between terahertz waves and matter, which can not only achieve multi frequency terahertz high sensitivity sensing, but also be used for the design of new slow light devices.

Abstract:We present a systematic investigation on the enhancement of the quality (Q) factors for guided-mode resonance (GMR) sensors with shallow subwavelength grating structures. By introducing the coupled-mode model, a theoretical high-Q factor can be achieved by choosing the proper geometric structure. Based on this method, a GMR sensor with a Q factor up to 8000, which is an order of magnitude larger than those of typical GMR sensors with Q factors within 100~300, was demonstrated experimentally. Besides, the approached GMR sensor achieved a bulk sensitivity of 135 nm/RIU with a high signal to noise ratio, which supports a detection limit of 1 ng/mL for bovine serum albumin detection.

Refractive Index Sensing by Asymmetric Dielectric Gratings with Both Bound States in the Continuum and Guided Mode Resonances

Abstract:Guided mode resonances (GMRs) and bounded states in the continuum (BICs), both supported by dielectric gratings, can realize ultrahigh Q-factors and strong localized field enhancements, beneficial to high-performance sensing applications. In this paper, based on GMR theory and numerical simulations, we systematically investigate the relationship between different order GMRs and BICs/quasi-BICs in Si-based dielectric gratings with symmetric, singly, and doubly asymmetric profiles. The introduction of broken-symmetry in adjacent gaps or Si nanobeams brings about new GRM and symmetry-protected BIC and can transform the fundamental BIC into a resonant state with finite Q-factor as high diffraction orders. A Friedric-Wintgen BIC is also achieved under normal incidence by breaking symmetries of both gaps and Si nanobeams. Further, the asymmetric dielectric gratings with high Q-factor quasi-BICs are designed as a refractive index sensor. Although the Q-factor and localized electric field penetrating into the vacuum are greatly improved with the decreasing asymmetry parameter, the sensitivity is almost unchanged while the FOM demonstrates an inverse square dependence on the asymmetry parameter. To further improve the sensitivity, we construct an asymmetric dielectric grating with a low fill factor and a big period, which manifests an excellent sensing performance with a near theoretical sensitivity limit of ∼1506 nm/RIU and an ultrahigh FOM of ∼5000.
An ultrasensitive and multispectral refractive index sensor design based on quad-supercell metamaterials

Abstract:Plasmonic metamaterials support the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), which is sensitive to the change in the dielectric environment and highly desirable for ultrasensitive biochemical sensing. In this work, a novel design of supercell metamaterials of four mutually rotating split ring resonators (SRRs) is proposed, where simultaneous excitations of odd (N=1 and N = 3) and even (N=2) resonance modes are realized due to additional asymmetry from the rotation and show insensitivity to two orthogonal polarizations. The full utilization of these three resonance dips show bright prospects for multispectral application. As a refractive index (RI) sensor, ultrahigh sensitivities ~1000nm/RIU for LC mode (N=1) and ~500nm/RIU for plasmon mode (N=2) are obtained in near infrared (NIR) spectrum.

Abstract:Refractive index sensing is of great significance in biological detection. Especially, all-dielectric metasurfaces can greatly improve the sensitivity of biological detection. However, the Q factor and electric field enhancement of most metasurfaces are generally low, resulting in low sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM). Meanwhile, fabrication tolerances may result in inability to achieve high-performance refractive index sensing. Here, we use finite element method (FEM) simulation to design a conical hole structure on an all-dielectric metasurface. The toroidal dipole resonance based on a conical hole structure can achieve a large-area electric field enhancement and a high Q factor, thereby achieving a sensitivity of 540 nm/RIU and FOM of 154.3. Meanwhile, considering the real fabrication tolerance, the proposed structure can still achieve high-sensitivity sensing when the conical hole structure changes the ellipsoidal structure. Therefore, the high sensitivity, high FOM, and robustness of the proposed structure make it highly significant for practical applications.

Abstract:We have investigated the sensing performance of the terahertz (THz) spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPs) on a metal groove array excited by a one-dimensional (1D) dielectric gradient metasurface (GMS) coupler. Such a compact SSPs coupler overcomes the disadvantages of their metal counterparts consisted of subwavelength metal antennas such as low efficiency and absorption loss. The normal incident terahertz wave is deflected by the dielectric GMS to the predetermined angles in the dielectric substrate which excites the SSPs modes on the metal groove array. Treating the 1D all-dielectric GMS as the excitation coupler, the confined SSPs modes can be generated in a small resonant cavity, leading to the strong light-matter interaction. The designed SSPs dielectric meta-couplers can be used to construct ultra-thin and compact sensing devices. Detailed investigation shows that the reflected amplitudes and phases of terahertz wave exhibit resonant responses to the change of the sample refractive index filled in the gap between the coupler and the metal groove array. The SSPs sensing by GMS coupling with the resonant frequency around 0.46 THz exhibits a high sensitivity of about 517.9 GHz/RIU with the resolution of 0.0001 RIU. A high Q-factor of 262 can also be achieved. In addition, the sensitivity of 410 GHz/RIU can be achieved with the resolution of 0.05 RIU, which can be used to detect large changes in refractive index. The study paves the ways for practical applications of terahertz trace-amount detection of chemical, organic or biomedical materials.

Gradient High‐Q Dielectric Metasurfaces for Broadband Sensing and Control of Vibrational Light‐Matter Coupling

Abstract:Surface‐enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRA) emerged as a powerful label‐free technique for highly sensitive and chemical specific analysis. SEIRA can be realized by employing the nanophotonic planar structures such as metasurfaces that can enhance light‐matter interaction in the spectral bands of molecular vibrations. Increasing sample complexity emphasizes the need for more elaborated metasurfaces that can operate simultaneously at different spectral bands, both accessing rich spectral information over a broad IR band as well as resolving subtle differences in the absorption fingerprints through narrow‐band resonances. Here, we introduce a novel concept of all‐dielectric gradient resonant metasurfaces, where the required spectral selectivity is achieved via local high‐Q resonances, while the continuous coverage of a broad spectral range is enabled by the gradual adjustment of the unit‐cell dimensions along the planar structure. The highly tailorable design of the gradient metasurfaces provides unprecedented flexibility for shaping the spectral sampling density to match efficiently the relevant bands of target analytes while keeping a compact device footprint. The versatility of gradient metasurfaces is further demonstrated through the efficiency of both sensing scenarios – including polymer mixture deconvolution and highly sensitive detection of a multistep bioassay involving proteins and lipids – and identification of the onset of vibrational strong coupling regime. The proposed gradient‐resonance platform makes an important contribution to the rapidly evolving and expanding landscape of nonlocal metasurfaces, enabling a broad range of applications in molecular detection and analysis of fundamental light‐matter interaction phenomena.
