Abstract:GNSS spoofing has become a significant security vulnerability threatening remote sensing systems. Hardware fingerprint-based GNSS receiver identification is one of the solutions to address this security issue. However, existing research has not provided a solution for distinguishing GNSS receivers of the same specification. This paper first theoretically proves that the CSACs (Chip-Scale Atomic Clocks) used in GNSS receivers have unique hardware noise and then proposes a fingerprinting scheme based on this hardware noise. Experiments based on the neural network method demonstrate that this fingerprint achieved an identification accuracy of 94.60% for commercial GNSS receivers of the same specification and performed excellently in anomaly detection, confirming the robustness of the fingerprinting method. This method shows a new real-time GNSS security monitoring method based on CSACs and can be easily used with any commercial GNSS receivers.

Abstract:An IEEE 1588 based application scheme was proposed to achieve accurate time synchronization for a deep seafloor observatory network based on the communication topological structure of the Zhejiang University Experimental and Research Observatory. The principles of the network time protocol (NTP) and precision time protocol (PTP) were analyzed. The framework for time synchronization of the shore station, undersea junction box layer, and submarine science instrument layer was designed. NTP and PTP network signals were decoded by a PTP master clock on a shore station that receives signals from the Global Positioning System and the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System as reference time sources. These signals were remotely transmitted by a subsea optical-electrical composite cable through an Ethernet passive optical network. Accurate time was determined by time synchronization devices in each layer. Synchronization monitoring experiments performed within a laboratory environment indicated that the proposed system is valid and has the potential to realize microsecond accuracy to satisfy the time synchronization requirements of a high-precision seafloor observatory network.

Abstract:In urban canyons, the reflections and obstructions of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals frequently lead to significant errors in measurements, the number of which can be larger than that of the correct measurements. This leads to a severe degradation of GNSS performance in urban canyons. Various fault detection and exclusion (FDE) algorithms have been developed to cope with these outliers caused by multipath effects. Most of these FDE algorithms check the consistency among measurements. However, in urban canyons, their effectiveness is significantly compromised by the lack of fault-free measurements. There is an urgent need to develop new constraints for enhancing GNSS FDE performance. In recent years, the advent of Chip-Scale Atomic Clock (CSAC), known for their affordability and high frequency stability, offers a promising solution for accurately predicting receiver clock errors. Additionally, using city maps to establish height constraints is another way to increase redundancy. The purpose of this study is to improve the GNSS positioning accuracy in urban canyons with the aid of CSAC and city map data. A novel FDE algorithm is developed to search for positions through the constraints of height and receiver clock. Extensive tests were conducted in urban canyons to evaluate the performance of the system. Results showed that the positioning accuracy can be improved from tens of meters to less than 6 m.

Abstract:Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are the most widely used positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) technology. However, a GNSS cannot provide effective PNT services in physical blocks, such as in a natural canyon, canyon city, underground, underwater, and indoors. With the development of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) technology, the chip scale atomic clock (CSAC) gradually matures, and performance is constantly improved. A deep coupled integration of CSAC and GNSS is explored in this thesis to enhance PNT robustness. Clock coasting of CSAC provides time synchronized with GNSS and optimizes navigation equations. However, errors of clock coasting increase over time and can be corrected by GNSS time, which is stable but noisy. In this paper, weighted linear optimal estimation algorithm is used for CSAC-aided GNSS, while Kalman filter is used for GNSS-corrected CSAC. Simulations of the model are conducted, and field tests are carried out. Dilution of precision can be improved by integration. Integration is more accurate than traditional GNSS. When only three satellites are visible, the integration still works, whereas the traditional method fails. The deep coupled integration of CSAC and GNSS can improve the accuracy, reliability, and availability of PNT.
A High Accuracy Time Keeping Scheme Based on GPS

Abstract:The high accuracy time synchronization signal based on global positioning system(GPS)is widely used in many fields like wide area measurement system(WAMS),but in actual applications some problems such as losing satellite lock will lead to synchronous clock signals getting out of sync.A high accuracy time keeping scheme by presetting time difference compensation is proposed.A high accuracy time keeping GPS timing system prototype based on GPS receiver and complex programmable logic device(CPLD)is developed.Comparative tests are made between the time keeping scheme proposed and the other two time keeping schemes,i.e.rising-edge time synchronization scheme and time difference feedback adjusting scheme.Test results show that when using the time keeping scheme proposed,the PPS(pulse per second)signal reaches an accuracy of ±300 ns under normal conditions and will ensure an accuracy of ±20 μs when losing satellite lock within 24 hours,which is obviously better than the other two schemes.

Abstract:The Global Positioning System (GPS), one of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), provides accurate position, navigation and time (PNT) information to various applications. One of the application that is highly receiving attention is satellite vehicles, especially Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Due to their limited ways to get PNT information and low performance of their onboard clocks, GPS system time (GPST) provided by GPS is a good reference clock to synchronize. However, GPS is well-known for its vulnerability to intentional or unintentional interference. This study aims to maintain the onboard clock with less error relative to the GPST even when the GPS signal is disrupted. In this study, we analyzed two major factors that affects the quality of the GPS measurements: the number of the visible satellites and the geometry of the satellites. Then, we proposed a weighted model for a Chip-Scale Atomic Clock (CSAC) that mitigates the clock error relative to the GPST while considering the two factors. Based on this model, a stand-alone CSAC could maintain its error less than 4 microseconds, even in a situation where no GPS signals are received for 12 hours.

Abstract:The realization of high performance satellite onboard clock is vital for various PNT applications. For further improvement of the synchronization-based satellite time and frequency references, this paper proposes a geosynchronous (GEO) satellite virtual clock concept based on ground–satellite synchronization and presents a beacon transponder structure for its implementation (scheduled for launch in 2025), which does not require atomic clocks to be mounted on the satellite. Its high performance relies only on minor modifications to the existing transponder structure of GEO satellites. We carefully modeled the carrier phase link and analyzed the factors causing link asymmetry within the special relativity. Considering that the performance of such synchronization-based satellite clocks is primarily limited by the link's random phase noise, which cannot be adequately modeled, we designed a closed-loop experiment based on commercial GEO satellites for pre-evaluation. This experiment was aimed at extracting the zero-means random part of the ground-satellite Ku-band carrier phase via a feedback loop. Ultimately, we obtained a 1σ value of 0.633 ps (two-way link), following the Gaussian distribution. From this result, we conclude that the proposed real-time Einstein-synchronization-defined satellite virtual clock can achieve picosecond-level replication of onboard time and frequency.

Abstract:Many critical computing applications rely on secure and dependable time which is reliably synchronized across large distributed systems. Today's time synchronization architectures are commonly based on global navigation satellite systems at the considerable risk of being exposed to outages, malfunction, or attacks against availability and accuracy. This paper describes a practical instantiation of a new global, Byzantine fault-tolerant clock synchronization approach that does not place trust in any single entity and is able to tolerate a fraction of faulty entities while still maintaining synchronization on a global scale among otherwise sovereign network topologies. Leveraging strong resilience and security properties provided by the path-aware SCION networking architecture, the presented design can be implemented as a backward compatible active standby solution for existing time synchronization deployments. Through extensive evaluation, we demonstrate that over 94% of time servers reliably minimize the offset of their local clocks to real-time in the presence of up to 20% malicious nodes, and all time servers remain synchronized with a skew of only 2 ms even after one year of reference clock outage.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the security problem of industrial networks. Smart grids, telecommunications, and many other wide-area networks heavily depend on the time synchronization service of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS). This service is exposed to the time synchronization attack (TSA) which can spoof GNSS timing results and bring serious consequences. Therefore, to improve the time security of networks, a novel TSA detection method named the separate clock drift matched filter (SCD-MF) is introduced. It aims at concealed TSA signals that would not bring conspicuous abnormalities in positioning or timing solutions. This method works by monitoring the synchronicity of signal pseudorange measurements, which are expected to be synchronously changed by concealed TSA signals. This article also presents real-world experiment results. TSA detection experiments are done on a self-developed testbed that contains a real-time TSA spoofer. Compared with two benchmark methods, the SCD-MF shows better detection abilities in different conditions. Moreover, the detection performance of the SCD-MF method is analyzed both theoretically and experimentally.
Time Synchronization of TESLA-enabled GNSS Receivers

Abstract:As TESLA-enabled GNSS for authenticated positioning reaches ubiquity, receivers must use an onboard, GNSS-independent clock and carefully constructed time synchronization algorithms to assert the authenticity afforded. This work provides the necessary checks and synchronization protocols needed in the broadcast-only GNSS context. We provide proof of security for each of our algorithms under a delay-capable adversary. The algorithms included herein enable a GNSS receiver to use its onboard, GNSS-independent clock to determine whether a message arrived at the correct time, to determine whether its onboard, GNSS-independent clock is safe to use and when the clock will no longer be safe in the future due to predicted clock drift, and to resynchronize its onboard, GNSS-independent clock. Each algorithm is safe to use even when an adversary induces delays within the protocol. Moreover, we discuss the implications of GNSS authentication schemes that use two simultaneous TESLA instances of different authentication cadences. To a receiver implementer or standards author, this work provides the necessary implementation algorithms to assert security and provides a comprehensive guide on why these methods are required.

Abstract:With the rapid application of large-scale low-orbit constellations, precision clock synchronization of satellite constellation network has become an important issue. The traditional method, relying on GNSS timing service, has limited accuracy and is difficult to improve, and it is also easily unavailable in interference environment. It has become an inevitable trend to build precision clock synchronization through inter-satellite links in the constellation network, to meet the needs of distributed collaboration and signal-level coherent synthesis for distributed space systems. The IEEE 1588 precision clock synchronization protocol, used in terrestrial wired networks, is an excellent protocol, and it provides a useful reference for the design of satellite constellation network clock synchronization. Based on the transparent clock mechanism of the IEEE 1588 protocol, this paper builds a clock synchronization system for satellite constellation wireless network, and a precision time-frequency transfer mechanism for constellation network is proposed. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of synchronization performance are also carried out. The results show that the synchronization performance of the farthest clock of the constellation network is closely related to the inter-satellite distance and the relay hops, and it points out the optimal clock synchronization method under the condition of a certain transmission power.

Abstract:The inter-satellite link (ISL) has been received increasing attention, as it is a potential way to achieve autonomous clock synchronization for envisioned space-based satellite networks with minimal ground segment capability. Existing satellite clock synchronization solutions either rely on prior information or modelling the relative motion by an approximated polynomial. In this paper, we propose a deep learning approach based on long short-term memory (LSTM) to decouple the clock parameters from pseudo-range measurements. The process of clock parameter estimation solely relies on the observed pseudo-range measurements, and the prior information of position and velocity are not required and the nonlinear relative motion process is modelled by training on historical data. The simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the benchmark solutions in terms of accuracy.

Abstract:Because modernized global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) carry high-performance atomic clocks onboard, a new problem has arisen regarding whether the clock estimation approach is good enough to reflect the true performance of onboard atomic clocks. This paper proposes a new and novel centimeter-level clock synchronization approach for BDS-3 satellites based on two-way comparisons using inter-satellite link measurements. The proposed approach estimates satellite clock offsets by adjusting satellite clock offsets obtained from inter-satellite ranging measurements, and measurement noise is greatly reduced. The noise level of clock offsets estimated by the new approach is 0.7 cm, which is 41% of that of clock offsets estimated by ISL direct two-way comparisons. Compared to the ODTS approach, the new approach efficiently eliminates orbit errors in clock offsets. On this basis, the paper presents a space-borne timescale (SPBT) using high-performance atomic clocks onboard BDS-3 satellites. The frequency stability of the SPBT is 8.6E-16 at a 1-day interval; this result is superior to ground GNSS timescales such as BDT. Based on the SPBT, this paper evaluates the performance of the BDS-3 onboard atomic clock. The 2-h and 24-h prediction uncertainties for the BDS-3 PHM are 0.04 and 0.12 m, and the frequency stabilities are 1.6e-14 and 3.4e-15 at 10,000-s and 1-day intervals, respectively. The 2-h and 24-h prediction uncertainties of the BDS-3 RAFSs are 0.05 and 0.37 m, and the frequency stabilities are 1.9E-14 and 8.1E-15 at 10,000-s and 1-day intervals. This study contributes to autonomous navigation and signal-in-space accuracy improvements for GNSSs.

World-wide navigation systems, such as GPS and GLONASS, are equipped with atomic clocks, while Japan’s QZSS is equipped with crystal oscillators. In this paper, we introduce time standard, the features of onboard clocks and the consideration of time comparison between satellite and ground station. Abstract:We propose a satellite-based scheme to perform clock synchronization between ground stations spread across the globe using quantum resources. We refer to this as a quantum clock synchronization (QCS) network. Through detailed numerical simulations, we assess the feasibility and capabilities of a near-term implementation of this scheme. We consider a small constellation of nanosatellites equipped only with modest resources. These include quantum devices such as spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) sources, avalanche photo-detectors (APDs), and moderately stable on-board clocks such as chip scale atomic clocks (CSACs). In our simulations, the various performance parameters describing the hardware have been chosen such that they are either already commercially available, or require only moderate advances. We conclude that with such a scheme establishing a global network of ground based clocks synchronized to sub-nanosecond level (up to a few picoseconds) of precision, would be feasible. Such QCS satellite constellations would form the infrastructure for a future quantum network, able to serve as a globally accessible entanglement resource. At the same time, our clock synchronization protocol, provides the sub-nanosecond level synchronization required for many quantum networking protocols, and thus, can be seen as adding an extra layer of utility to quantum technologies in the space domain designed for other purposes.

Abstract:In a cognitive satellite network (CSN) with GEO and LEO satellites, there is a large propagation losses between the sensing satellite and the ground station. The results of spectrum sensing from a single satellite may be inaccurate, which will create serious interference in the primary satellite system. Cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) has become the key technology for solving the above problems in recent years. However, most of the current CSS techniques are model-driven. They are difficult to model and implement in CSNs since their detection performance is strongly dependent on an assumed statistical model. Thus, we propose a novel CSS scheme, which uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs), self-attention (SA) modules, long short-term memory networks (LSTMs), and soft fusion networks, called CSL-SFNet. This scheme combines the advantages of CNNs, SA modules, and LSTMs to extract the features of the input signals from the spatial and temporal domains. Additionally, the CSL-SFNet makes use of a novel soft fusion technique that improves detection performance while also considerably reducing communication overhead. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve a detection probability of 90% when the signal-to-noise ratio is −20 dB; it has a shorter running time and always outperforms the other CSS algorithms.

Abstract:A wide gamut of important applications rely on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) for precise time and positioning. Attackers dictating the GNSS receiver position and time solution are a significant risk, especially due to the inherent vulnerability of GNSS systems. A first line of defense, for a large number of receivers, is to rely on additional information obtained through the rich connectivity of GNSS enabled platforms. Network time can be used for direct validation of the GNSS receiver time; but this depends on network availability. To allow attack detection even when there are prolonged network disconnections, we present a method based on on-board ensemble of reference clocks. This allows the receiver to detect sophisticated attacks affecting the GNSS time solution, independently of the specific attack methodology. Results obtained with Chip-Scale Oven Compensated Oscillators (CS-OCXO) are promising and demonstrate the potential of embedded ensembles of reference clocks, detecting attacks causing modifications of the receiver time offset as low as 0.3us, with half the detection latency compared to related literature.

Abstract:Positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) is a strategic key technology widely used in military and civilian applications. Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are the most important PNT techniques. However, the vulnerability of GNSS threatens PNT service quality, and integrations with other information are necessary. A chip scale atomic clock (CSAC) provides high-precision frequency and high-accuracy time information in a short time. A micro inertial measurement unit (MIMU) provides a strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) with rich navigation information, better real-time feed, anti-jamming, and error accumulation. This study explores the coupled integration of CSAC, MIMU, and GNSS to enhance PNT performance. The architecture of coupled integration is designed and degraded when any subsystem fails. A mathematical model for a precise time aiding navigation filter is derived rigorously. The CSAC aids positioning by weighted linear optimization when the visible satellite number is four or larger. By contrast, CSAC converts the GNSS observations to range measurements by "clock coasting" when the visible satellite number is less than four, thereby constraining the error divergence of micro inertial navigation and improving the availability of GNSS signals and the positioning accuracy of the integration. Field vehicle experiments, both in open-sky area and in a harsh environment, show that the integration can improve the positioning probability and accuracy.
GNSS Time Synchronization Attack Detection and Discrimination Based on Correlations of Calculated Clock Drift Time-Differences

Abstract:The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) serves people as an essential precise time synchronization source. However, to provide public services on a global scale, GNSS civil signals need to have open structures. And their power is much lower than thermal noises at the receiver end. These make spoofing a major threat and GNSS timing users are easy to be deceived by a kind of spoofing known as the Time Synchronization Attack (TSA). The real-world damage of TSA is proved by researchers and demands of TSA defense methods emerge. Typical anti-spoofing methods can bring some degrees of security, but they mainly focus on physical parameters that do not affect timing solutions. So attackers always have possibilities to cheat these methods. A more robust way is to directly monitor key timing results, like clock biases and clock drifts. Researchers have come up with several methods of this kind, but their requirements of complex computations and incessant mitigations may bring difficulties to actual usages. To complement these deficiencies, this paper proposes a TSA detection and discrimination method based on the abnormal similarity between signals from different satellites. Specifically, we calculate clock drifts from each satellite signal separately and monitor the correlation values of different clock drifts time-differenced sequences. As TSA signals need to avoid sudden changes in timing results and keep actual position solutions, spoofing is ought to maintain a same changing rate of pseudorange differences among all spoofing-authentic signal pairs. This additional similarity will greatly enlarge the correlation value, thus, TSA is revealed. After detected and discriminated by the proposed method, spoofing affects will be much easier to erase. We achieve this method by monitoring timing results only and requiring few complex computations, so it will be a sufficient complement to off-the-shelf real-world TSA defenses. Our motivations and method effects are verified on an open test-bed.

Abstract:To reduce the dependence on the high-precision time service provided by the GPS,it is desirable for our country to establish a low-cost and high-precision time service system of independent intellectual property rights.In this paper,we present a new method of satellite time service achieved through the broadcasting of a communication satellite and using a high-stability ground-based atomic clock as the time-frequency reference.We study the theory and measurement of multiple-satellite and single-satellite time services with the navigation constellations constituted by high-stability ground-based atomic clocks and communication satellites.We particularly analyzed factors affecting time accuracy in these two types of methods.Because of the high stability of the time-frequency source our proposed forwarding approach of satellite time service can have improved ranging accuracy.As long as the systematic error of time delay is precisely corrected,highly accurate time service can be achieved with our approach as well: Time accuracy with the coarse acquisition code can be within 20 ns and that with the fine short code is about 10 ns.In short our proposed system has the advantages of flexibility,convenience,and broad applications.
