Abstract:Advancements in photonic integration technology have enabled the effective excitation of simulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) on a single chip, boosting Brillouin-based applications such as microwave photonic signal processing, narrow-linewidth lasers, and optical sensing. However, on-chip circuits still require large pump power and centimeter-scale waveguide length to achieve a considerable Brillouin gain, making them both power-inefficient and challenging for integration. Here, we exploit the slow-light effect to significantly enhance SBS, presenting the first, to the best of our knowledge, demonstration of a slow-light Brillouin-active waveguide on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. By integrating a Bragg grating with a suspended ridge waveguide, a 2.1-fold enhancement of the forward Brillouin gain coefficient is observed in a 1.25 mm device. Furthermore, this device shows a Brillouin gain coefficient of 1,693 m<sup>-1</sup>W<sup>-1</sup> and a mechanical quality factor of 1,080. The short waveguide length reduces susceptibility to inhomogeneous broadening, enabling the simultaneous achievement of a high Brillouin gain coefficient and a high mechanical quality factor. This approach introduces an additional dimension to enhance acousto-optic interaction efficiency in the SOI platform and holds significant potential for microwave photonic filters and high spatial resolution sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate that we realize large-delay slow light based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a short length of our fabricated small-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The cavity effect from the partially reflective splices in the end of the PCF enhances slow-light delay significantly. Our experiments show that large slow-light delay can be easily realized in a very short length of the PCF with a moderate pump power. Up to a one-half pulse-width delay is achieved in only 50 m of PCF in a single pump segment.

Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate broadband Brillouin slow light using multiple equal-amplitude spectral lines generated by multifrequency phase modulation, The theoretical analysis shows that 4n-1 equal-amplitude spectral lines can be obtained if the modulation signal comprises the fundamental frequency and the odd harmonic waves, where n denotes the number of frequency components in the modulation signal. In experiment, 7 and 11 equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained and Brillouin bandwidths of 340 and 570 MHz are gained, respectively. The experimental results also indicate that the slope of the broadening factor for the delayed signal decreases in the case of broad and flattened Brillouin gain spectrum. Abstract:The feasibility and high delay efficiency of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) slow light under different pump wavelengths in a high nonlinearity silica microstructure fiber (HNL–MSF) are demonstrated experimentally. Up to 14 ns time delay is achieved by the HNL–MSF under relative low pump power (∼200 mW) and short fiber length (25 m), showing that the time delay efficiency of the HNL–MSF is four times higher than that of the single mode fiber (SMF). As a result, the transit time of the signal pulse can be reduced by shortening the fiber length because of the high nonlinearity due to the small mode area, leading to an improvement of the control rate of the fiber-based SBS slow light technique. Further improvement of the control rate could be expected by combining the structure design and the fiber material selection.

Abstract:We present a method to achieve flat-top gain spectrum through overlapping multiple gain lines, which can be used to increase slow light bandwidth and relative pulse delay. A tunable gain bandwidth can be realized by changing the number of spectral lines and frequency separation between adjacent spectral lines. We demonstrate the method in a SBS-based slow light system. A phase modulator is used to modulate the phase of the pump wave, generating a pump wave with multi-line spectrum and achieving a Brillouin gain bandwidth of ~ 330 MHz.

Abstract:Silicon photonics, with its CMOS compatibility and high integration density, has enabled a wide range of novel applications. Harnessing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), an optomechanic interaction between optical and GHz acoustic waves, in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platforms attracts great interests for its potential in narrow-linewidth lasers and microwave photonics. However, the poor optoacoustic overlap in silicon nanowires on conventional SOI platforms has previously restricted the observation of SBS signals to suspended silicon waveguide structures. In this work, we report, for the first time, the SBS response in a non-suspended ultra-low-loss thick-SOI waveguide platform. The SBS process in this 3~$\mu$m thick SOI platform is enabled by a leaky acoustic mode that coexists with the optical mode in the waveguide core, resulting in enhanced optoacoustic overlap. We measured a Brillouin gain coefficient of 2.5 m$^{-1}$W$^{-1}$ and 1.9 m$^{-1}$W$^{-1}$ at 37.6 GHz for the rib and strip waveguide, respectively. This work paves the way for Brillouin-based applications in non-suspended ultra-low-loss silicon photonics systems.

Loading-effect-based 3-D microfabrication empowers on-chip Brillouin optomechanics

Abstract:The acousto-optic interaction known as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has emerged as fundamental principles for realizing crucial components and functionalities in integrated photonics. However, the main challenge of integrated Brillouin devices is how to effectively confine both optical and acoustic waves. Apart from that, the manufacturing processes for these devices need to be compatible with standard fabrication platforms, and streamlined to facilitate their large-scale integration. Here, we demonstrate a novel suspended nanowire structure that can tightly confine photons and phonons. Furthermore, tailored for this structure, we introduce a loading-effect-based three-dimensional microfabrication technique, compatible with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. This innovative technique allows for the fabrication of the entire structure using a single-step lithography exposure, significantly streamlining the fabrication process. Leveraging this structure and fabrication scheme, we have achieved a Brillouin gain coefficient of 1100 1/W/m on the silicon-on-insulator platform within a compact footprint. It can support a Brillouin net gain over 4.1 dB with modest pump powers. We believe that this structure can significantly advance the development of SBS on chip, unlocking new opportunities for the large-scale integration of Brillouin-based photonic devices.

Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a nonlinear optical phenomenon mediated from the coupling of photons and phonons. It has found applications in various realms, yet the acousto-optic interaction strength remains relatively weak. Enhancing the SBS with resonant structures could be a promising solution, but this method faces strict constraints in operational bandwidth. Here, we present the first demonstration to our knowledge of the broadband enhancement of Brillouin nonlinearities by a suspended coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) on an SOI platform. By comprehensively balancing the Brillouin gain and operational bandwidth, a 3-fold enhancement for the Brillouin gain coefficient (GB) B ) and a broad operational bandwidth of over 80 GHz have been achieved. Furthermore, this 1.1 mm device shows a forward Brillouin gain coefficient of 2422 m - 1 W - 1 and a high mechanical quality factor (Qm) m ) of 1060. This approach marks a pivotal advancement toward wide bandwidth, low energy consumption, and compact integrated nonlinear photonic devices, with potential applications in tunable microwave photonic filters and phonon-based non- reciprocal devices. Abstract:The Stimulated Brillouin Scattering(SBS) threshold, SBS gain spectrum, SBS amplification characteristics and slow light effect based on SBS in high nonlinear fiber(HNLF) are experimentally studied and analyzed. The SBS threshold and gain spectrum of a standard single mode fiber is also measured as a comparison to that of the HNLF. Under a SBS pump light with 100 MHz linewidth, the SBS threshold of the HNLF is 60 mW, the bandwidth of the SBS bandwidth gain spectrum is 150 MHz, the maximum delay experimentally achieved is approximate 15 ns, and the delay spectrum matches the SBS gain spectrum well. All these studies will have value in the realization of future all optical dely line and all optical buffer in the all optical network.

Abstract:On-chip stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has attracted extensive attention by introducing acousto-optic coupling interactions in all-optical signal processing systems. In this article, we demonstrate stimulated intermodal Brillouin scattering (SIMBS) through a hybrid photonic-phononic silicon waveguide on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The designed photonic-phononic waveguide can independently control the optical and acoustic fields by introducing the ridge waveguide as a line defect into the honeycomb lattice phononic crystal slab. Small-signal Stokes gain of 0.7 dB is achieved in a 1-cm long straight waveguide device with an on-chip pump power of 42.5 mW. Positive net Brillouin amplification is also expected by effectively reducing the linear loss. Our proposed device offers a potential approach to implementing Brillouin amplifiers, nonreciprocal devices, and signal processing in planar photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:We investigate slow-light via stimulated Brillouin scattering in a room temperature optical fiber that is pumped by a spectrally broadened laser. Broadening the spectrum of the pump field increases the linewidth $\Delta\omega_p$ of the Stokes amplifying resonance, thereby increasing the slow-light bandwidth. One physical bandwidth limitation occurs when the linewidth becomes several times larger than the Brillouin frequency shift $\Omega_B$ so that the anti-Stokes absorbing resonance cancels out substantially the Stokes amplifying resonance and hence the slow-light effect. We find that partial overlap of the Stokes and anti-Stokes resonances can actually lead to an enhancement of the slow-light delay - bandwidth product when $\Delta\omega_p \simeq 1.3 \Omega_B$. Using this general approach, we increase the Brillouin slow-light bandwidth to over 12 GHz from its nominal linewidth of $\sim$30 MHz obtained for monochromatic pumping. We controllably delay 75-ps-long pulses by up to 47 ps and study the data pattern dependence of the broadband SBS slow-light system.

High-fidelity, broadband stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-based slow light using fast noise modulation

Abstract:We demonstrate a 5-GHz-broadband tunable slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a standard highly-nonlinear optical fiber pumped by a noise-current-modulated laser beam. The noise modulation waveform uses an optimized pseudo-random distribution of the laser drive voltage to obtain an optimal flat-topped gain profile, which minimizes the pulse distortion and maximizes pulse delay for a given pump power. Eye-diagram and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis show that this new broadband slow-light technique significantly increases the fidelity of a delayed data sequence, while maintaining the delay performance. A fractional delay of 0.81 with a SNR of 5.2 is achieved at the pump power of 350 mW using a 2-km-long highly nonlinear fiber with the fast noise-modulation method, demonstrating a 50% increase in eye-opening and a 36% increase in SNR compared to a previous slow-modulation method.

Abstract:We report the observations of spontaneous Raman scattering in silicon photonic crystal waveguides. Continuous-wave measurements of Stokes emission for both wavelength and power dependence is reported in single line-defect waveguides in hexagonal lattice photonic crystal silicon membranes. By utilizing the Bragg gap edge dispersion of the TM-like mode for pump enhancement and the TE-like fundamental mode-onset for Stokes enhancement, the Stokes emission was observed to increase by up to five times in the region of slow group velocity. The results show explicit nonlinear enhancement in a silicon photonic crystal slow-light waveguide device.
