Abstract:Rapid progress in nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces enabled many novel optical characteristics for metasurfaces, with potential applications in frequency metrology [Zimmermann et al. Opt. Lett. 29:310 (2004)], timing characterization [Singh et al. Laser Photonics Rev. 14:1 (2020)] and quantum information [Kues et al. Nature. 546:622 (2017)]. However, the spectrum of nonlinear optical response was typically determined from the linear optical resonance. In this work, a wavelength-multiplexed nonlinear plasmon-MoS2 hybrid metasurface with suppression phenomenon was proposed, where multiple nonlinear signals could to be simultaneously processed and optionally tuned. A clear physical picture to depict the nonlinear plasmonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) was presented, from the perspective of both classical and quantum approaches. Particularly, beyond the ordinary plasmon-polariton effect, we numerically demonstrated a giant BIC-inspired second-order nonlinear susceptibility 10-5m/V of MoS2 in the infrared band. The novelty in our study lies in the presence of a quantum oscillator that can be adopted to both suppress and enhance the nonlinear quasi BICs. This selectable nonlinear BIC-based suppression and enhancement effect can optionally block undesired modes, resulting in narrower linewidth as well as smaller quantum decay rates, which is also promising in slow-light-associated technologies.
Multiple Surface Lattice Resonances Generated with Noble Metallic Split-Ring Resonator Arrays

Abstract:Multiple surface lattice resonances generated with noble metallic nanoparticle array can be used to suppress radiative losses around several spectral positions, enlarge the resonance quality factor, and enhance the localized near-field intensity. This study proposed a method to generate multiple surface lattice resonances with noble metallic split-ring resonator arrays. It shows that for the magnetic dipole resonance, the generated equivalent magnetic dipole is oriented perpendicular to the paper plane, and the scattering fields arc propagating along x and y directions, which makes it possible to realize the coupling between the magnetic dipole mode and the Rayleigh anomaly along both directions. The calculation results indeed reveal that the coupling between the magnetic dipole mode and the Rayleigh anomaly leads to the formation of a sharp surface lattice resonance, and double surface lattice resonances arc generated when the lattice spacing arc different with each other. Furthermore, the similar optical response can be obtained with electric quadrupole resonance of the split-ring resonator. These properties make splitring resonator arrays promise for the design of micro/nano photonic devices.

Abstract:Multifunction is one of the most important research directions for the optical metasurface.This paper creatively proposes a multifunctional optical metasurface based on polarization multiplexing, which is composed of periodic arrays of metal-insulator-metal structural meta-atom. In the y-polarization state, the metasurface realizes anomalous reflection and high-saturation structural color in the visible band. Besides, in the x-polarization state, the metasurface realizes refractive index sensing with a high sensitivity of 640.5 RIU/nm due to surface lattice resonance excited by the incident beam. The proposed metasurface has great potential applications in the field of spectrometers, displays, and sensors.

Abstract:The surface lattice resonance (SLR) is a prominent mechanism to produce ultranarrow spectrum line shape, which can enhance the localized electric field and restrain radiation losses. However, the present research mainly focuses on the single-mode SLR and does not involve the multiplexing and higher-order SLRs. To promote the practicability of SLR, we propose bimodal reflection-type SLRs excited by the natural light based on three kinds of asymmetric optical metasurfaces systemically, which are applied to refractive index sensing with high figures of merit (FoMs) experimentally. The rectangular lattice metasurface breaks the C4 symmetry and produces concurrently (±1, 0) and (0, ±1) order SLRs, with FoMs of 33.50 and 28.85, respectively. In addition, the metasurface composed of two different patches belongs to a spatial multiplexing design and can also realize nearly identical SLR responses. Furthermore, the asymmetric dimer metasurface excites two SLRs with distinct orders meanwhile, where the high-order SLR originates from the trapping of the corresponding Rayleigh anomaly waves. The above-mentioned metasurface designs have flexibility and regularity, whose resonance wavelengths, sensitivities, and bimodal combinations can be attained at will by tuning period lengths, arranging different patches, or forming a dimer meta-atom. The research takes a significant step for bimodal SLR development and application, especially in the sensing field.

Abstract:Surface lattice resonances (SLRs) in metasurfaces are promising in applications of sub-wavelength devices.Tunable and multimodal SLRs further enhance their appeal for flexible and multi-wavelength light-matter interactions. While multimodal SLRs offer promising properties, their realization often requires sophisticated designs, leading to limited tunability. Furthermore, current high-Q SLR implementations necessitate a homogeneous index in the operational environment, restricting potential applications such as biosensors that are typically operated in an aqueous or air cladding on a substrate. Here we present guided-SLRs (gSLRs) that are easily accessible in index-discontinuous environments, offering multimodal properties and straightforward tunability of resonances wavelengths, mode number, and mode coupling strengths. The gSLRs are achieved by coupling scattered light from metasurface units into a slab waveguide, creating a light ropagating channel in the lattice plane within an index-asymmetric environment. Tailoring the radiation pattern of individual units with guided transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, multimodal resonances in both orthogonal and parallel coupling directions are accomplished. Mode number and mode frequency positions can be easily controlled by adjusting the waveguide configuration, while mode strength is tuned by vertical positions of lattices in the slab. Multimodal gSLRs with strong intensities and tunable ositions extending from visible to near-infrared range are achieved when compose metasurfaces with gold nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) cavities. This easy-to-access, actively tunable and multimodal gSLR in inhomogeneous mediums will advance the realization of ultrathin and ultracompact nano-optical and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrated a Fano resonant superlattice metasurface structure composed of bilayer trimeric metallic stripes in each unit cell. It can simultaneously support two types of Fano resonances, which individually possesses electric and magnetic properties at microwave frequencies. respectively. The electric Fano resonance is generated by the anti-phase electric mode interfering with in-phase electric mode, while the magnetic Fano resonance stems from the interference between the magnetic modes in the gap area and the anti-phase electric mode in each layer of the bilayer metasurface. In addition, the double Fano resonances are readily tunable by adjusting a variety of distance degrees of freedom in the composite structure. Our proposed model not only provides a possibility to stimulate and control electric and magnetic Fano resonances simultaneously for microwaves, but also holds great potential for biosensing and switching applications for even higher frequency range such as terahertz or optical region. Abstract:Surface lattice resonance (SLR) is a pretty effective mechanism to realize ultranarrow linewidths in the spectrum. Herein, we propose and demonstrate reflection-type SLRs in all-metal metasurfaces experimentally, compared with the traditional transmission-type SLR, which can avoid the refractive index (RI) mismatch problem and are more suitable for high-efficiency RI sensing due to direct contact and strong light-matter interaction. The measured SLR linewidth is 13.5 nm influenced by the meta-atom size, which needs a compromise design to keep a balance between the narrow linewidth and noise immunity. Notably, the SLR sensitivity is determined by the lattice period along the polarization direction with regularity, which establishes an intuitive link between structures and optical responses and provides a theoretical guide for metasurface designs. Additionally, incident angle multiplexing will make the resonance wavelength red shift or blue shift in the case of orthogonal polarization. The rectangular array metasurface can realize dual SLRs with different sensing performances. Flexibly, the SLR can also be formed by the different meta-atoms and arrays. Multiresonances of quasi-trapped modes in metasurfaces based on nanoparticles of transition metal dichalcogenides

Abstract:The features of polarization control of multiple multiresonances for quasi-trapped modes excited by synchronization of bianisotropic dipole responses in MoS$_2$ disks with a hole are considered. Using the numerical calculations with analytical multipole analysis, we showed that the presence of a strong optical anisotropy of MoS$_2$ nanoparticles provides an additional degree of freedom and allows to observe several resonances of electric and magnetic dipoles at once in a narrow spectral range. Based on the simulation results, we obtained the frequency dependences for the dipole polarizabilities of the MoS$_2$ disk with a hole, which allow one to distinguish the contributions of the nonlocal and bianisotropic dipole responses and possessing several features in the near infrared range. Using the polarizability spectra of single nanoparticles and applying the tuning strategy, the design of the MoS$_2$ metasurface supporting three resonances of quasi-trapped modes at once in a narrow spectral range was developed. One of these resonances corresponds to the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm. The spectrum of light reflection for MoS$_2$ metasurface is characterized by three narrowband dips corresponding to the wavelengths of the quasi-trapped modes. It was shown that a change in the polarization of a wave normally incident on the metasurface to orthogonal one leads to a change in the type of bianisotropic response excited in each MoS$_2$ disk and to the excitation of three other features in the reflection spectra of the metasurface at wavelengths close to the initial values.

Abstract:This paper reports an integrated bifunctional metasurface composed of metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) trapezoidal nanoantennas. Polarization, wavelength, and angle are all multiplexed to improve the integration and the performance of the metasurface. Under orthogonal-polarized incidence, phase and amplitude are tuned independently by gap surface plasmon (GSP) resonance, leading to the combination of beam deflection and structural color printing functions. Both functions work in broadband, namely, 360 nm to 540 nm for beam deflection function and 400 nm to 800 nm for structural color printing function. Angle multiplexing further improves the tunability of the two functions. This integrated bifunctional metasurface is very suitable to be used in ultra-compact optics systems, and may find more applications in optical and biological sensing areas.
Integrating Lattice and Gap Plasmonic Modes to Construct Dual-Mode Metasurfaces for Enhancing Light–matter Interaction

Abstract:Photonic structures with optical resonances beyond a single controllable mode are strongly desired for enhancing light-matter interactions and bringing about advanced photonic devices. However, the realization of effective multimodal photonic structures has been restricted by the limited tunable range of mode manipulation, the spatial dispersions of electric fields or the polarization-dependent excitations. To overcome these limitations, we create a dualmode metasurface by integrating the plasmonic surface lattice resonance and the gap plasmonic modes; this metasurface offers a widely tunable spectral range, good overlap in the spatial distribution of electric fields, and polarization independence of excitation light. To show that such dual-mode metasurfaces are versatile platforms for enhancing light-matter interactions, we experimentally demonstrate a significant enhancement of second-harmonic generation using our design, with a conversion efficiency of 1–3 orders of magnitude larger than those previously obtained in plasmonic systems. These results may inspire new designs for functional multimodal photonic structures.
Multi-mode Resonance Properties of Two-Dimensional Metal-Dielectric-metal Fishnet Metasurface at Visible Wavelengths

Abstract:We experimentally and numerically investigate the multiple types of resonance modes that occur in a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) fishnet metasurface, including magnetic plasmon polaritons, localized surface plasmon resonance, and surface plasmon polariton-Bloch waves in the visible spectral range. The parametric dependences of the multiple resonant wavelengths are all carefully analyzed by varying the gap layer thickness, the period and the neck length of the fishnet structure. Using our knowledge of the geometric parameter dependences, we demonstrate the feasibility of shaping the transmission spectrum of the MDM fishnet metasurface based on control of the light polarization. Numerical simulations are performed and their results coincide perfectly with the experimental results, which indicate that the magnetic mode is more easily tunable than the other modes. Our research will be useful in the design of MDM fishnet structures for specific applications at visible frequencies, including color filters, sensors, color light-emitting devices, and laser sources.
Highly Controllable Double Fano Resonances in Plasmonic Metasurfaces.

Abstract:Creating plasmonic nanostructures with controllable Fano resonances is of great interest for a number of important applications including metamaterials and biosensors. Realizing double Fano resonances is even more challenging but may become favorable to the applications such as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and second harmonic generation (SHG). Here we have developed plasmonic metasurfaces consisting of a nanoring array and a metallic film separated by a dielectric spacer for the generation of double Fano resonances. The double Fano resonances are realized by the strong plasmonic coupling between the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode of the nanoring array and the cavity modes of the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure, and consequently exhibit large electric field enhancements at double frequencies. The resonance wavelength, the linewidth and the wavelength separation of double Fano resonances can be well tailored by changing the cavity length of the structure and the parameters of the top array pattern including the diameter, periodicity, and shape. In addition, we develop a far-field coupling model to efficiently determine the cavity length of metasurface structures with double Fano resonances at specific wavelengths with much ease and acceptable accuracy compared to the time-consuming and computing resource-needed numerical simulations.

Abstract:Plasmonic metasurfaces supporting collective lattice resonances have attracted increasing interest due to their exciting properties of strong spatial coherence and enhanced light–matter interaction. Although the focusing of light by high-numerical-aperture (NA) objectives provides an essential way to boost the field intensities, it remains challenging to excite high-quality resonances by using high-NA objectives due to strong angular dispersion. Here, we address this challenge by employing the physics of bound states in the continuum (BICs). We design a novel anisotropic plasmonic metasurface combining a two-dimensional lattice of high-aspect-ratio pillars with a one-dimensional plasmonic grating, fabricated by a two-photon polymerization technique and gold sputtering. We demonstrate experimentally multiple resonances with absorption amplitudes exceeding 80% at mid-IR using an NA = 0.4 reflective objective. This is enabled by the weak angular dispersion of quasi-BIC resonances in such hybrid plasmonic metasurfaces. Abstract:Diffractive plasmonic metasurfaces offer the possibility of controlling the flow of light in flat optical systems through the excitation of lattice plasmon modes by a careful metasurface design. Nonetheless, a remaining challenge for this type of structure is the dynamic control of its optical properties via degrees of freedom, such as the polarization states of incoming light. In this report, we explain theoretically and demonstrate experimentally the polarization control over amplitude and propagation direction of lattice plasmon modes supported by a multipolar plasmonic metasurface. These unidirectional optical waves result from the coupling between near-field effects of individual meta-atoms and far-field effects originating from the lattice modes. The device operates over a broad wavelength range, maintaining its directional behavior and enabling it to operate also as a polarization-controlled directional diffraction grating, a power splitter, or an optical router for on-chip photonics applications.

Abstract:Metasurfaces allow to manipulate light at the nanoscale. Integrating metasurfaces with transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers provides additional functionality to ultrathin optics, including tunable optical properties with enhanced light-matter interactions. In this work, we demonstrate the realization of a polaritonic metasurface utilizing the sizable light-matter coupling of excitons in monolayer WSe2 and the collective lattice resonances of nanoplasmonic gold arrays. To this end, we developed a novel fabrication method to integrate gold nanodisk arrays in hexagonal boron nitride and thus simultaneously ensure spectrally narrow exciton transitions and their immediate proximity to the near-field of array surface lattice resonances. In the regime of strong light-matter coupling, the resulting van der Waals metasurface exhibits all key characteristics of lattice polaritons, with a directional and linearly-polarized far-field emission profile dictated by the underlying nanoplasmonic lattice. Our work can be straightforwardly adapted to other lattice geometries, establishing structured van der Waals metasurfaces as means to engineer polaritonic lattices.

Reconfigurable Metalattices: Combining Multipolar Lattice Resonances and Magneto-Optical Effect in Far and Near Fields

Abstract:The present work has elaborated the roles of near- and far-field lattice resonances (LRs) in the performance of one-dimensional metalattices composed of magneto-optically (MO) coated cylinders. By taking advantage of LR effects and MO-modified multipolar interferences, it is feasible to alter transmission or reflection with unity efficiency by turning on or off external magnetic fields. In the far field, multipolar LRs near Rayleigh anomaly (RA) can be acquired, leading to transmission suppression or enhancement for different multipolar interference mechanisms. Meanwhile, thanks to exciting degeneracy-broken multipoles, asymmetric diffractive patterns are observed despite normal incidence. However, in the diffractionless region with strong near-field couplings, we find that LR effects are capable of not only modifying scattering amplitude (>1) but also introducing phase change or even inversion. Specifically, owing to the appearance of π/2-phase rotated electric dipoles, the first and second Kerker conditions are achieved simultaneously in this work. In addition, the coupling mechanism of RA-associated LRs and MO-influenced Mie modes supported by an individual cylinder is also unveiled. Besides, a proof-of-concept example using realistic Si@InSb metalattices has also been demonstrated, showing reconfigurable performance as expected. The revealed far/near-field mechanism of interplay between LRs and MO-modified multipoles will shed new light on wavefront engineering with diffracted effects and reconfigurable features.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have demonstrated revolutionary capabilities in manipulating the polarization, phase, and amplitude of light. Pancharatnam–Berry (P–B) phase metasurfaces can operate over a broad spectrum and robust phase distributions against fabrication tolerance. However, the conjugated characteristic of the modulated phases for different spin photons introduces an obstacle for multifunctional photonics applications. This problem seriously hinders the development of P–B phase metasurfaces. We proposed a method through symmetry breaking of photonic spin–orbit interactions and achieving spin-independent manipulation of spin–orbit interactions. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we realized polarization-multiplexed multifunctional metalenses at visible and infrared wavelengths with high numerical aperture, and the focal lengths of different foci can be adjusted independently. The proposed metalens has potential applications in imaging, optical communications and optical trapping, and also the approach of independent manipulation of spin–orbit interactions can facilitate the development of P–B phase metasurfaces toward spin-controlled multifunctional photonics.

Abstract:Both toroidal dipoles, electric dipoles and magnetic dipoles belong to one type of electromagnetic excitation. In this paper, we present an all-dielectric metasurface composed of an array of square nanoholes. It can simultaneously generate four resonance responses excited by TD, EQ and MD in the continuous near-infrared band. By introducing the in-plane symmetry breaking of the unit cell, asymmetric dielectric nanohole arrays are used to achieve two quasi-BIC resonance modes with high Q-factors excited by EQ and MD. The paper theoretically analyzes and demonstrates the relationship between structural asymmetry and the radiative Q-factor of two Fano resonances, that are governed by symmetry-protected BICs. And multipole decomposition and near-field analysis are performed to demonstrate the dominant role of various electromagnetic excitations in the four modes. The spectra response is also calculated for different incident polarization angles and medium refractive indices. The proposed metasurface is more feasible and practical compared to other complex nanostructures, which may open avenues for the development of applications such as biochemical sensing, optical switches and optical modulators, and provide a reference for the design of devices with polarization-independent properties.
