Abstract:Marine natural gas hydrate reservoir is always with underlying overpressure gas with a larger spatial extent, which is the most promising reservoir type for commercial production. However, this type composite occurrence of gas and hydrate (COGH) is of high possibility with great overpressure due to the low permeability of hydratebearing sediment, representing a high difficulty in exploiting the COGH reservoir and distinguished differences between its top and bottom depressurization. In order to figure out these unsolved problems, this study remolded a standard COGH reservoir with an approximately 40 % hydrate saturation at 4.0MP and 274.15 K and a 10 MPa underlying gas, and then the exploitation characteristics of the COGH reservoirs by different exploitation locations and depressurization rates were investigated using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. The production processes using top depressurization exploitation (TDE) and bottom depressurization exploitation (BDE) modes are both deeply affected by the hydrate seal, which well blocks the flow of underlying gas through hydrate. The top and bottom pressures are found independent until the fracture of hydrate seal, and the overpressure in TDE mode increases approximately 1.2 MPa and decreases greatly and even becomes an opposite overpressure of 1.7 MPa in BDE mode. Immediately after the seal fracture in all experimental cases, the overpressure of the COGH disappears gradually in different rates due to the effects of flow direction and pressure difference on fluid distribution and reservoir permeability. The fracture of hydrate seal is the watershed of independent and joint exploitation stages, and most hydrates are dissociated at the joint exploitation stage. In addition, the formation of ice is observed during the joint exploitation stage, which obviously promoting the instantaneous dissociation of hydrates due to the heat absorption, and the ice exists long after the hydrate dissociation. Comprehensively considering the overpressure risk, pressure-drop behavior and dissociation characteristics, BDE mode is advisable as the exploitation scheme of COGH reservoir. This study reveals the difference between TDE and BDE modes of COGH reservoir with overpressure gas for the first time and is of great significance for the spot scheme design of large-scale production of marine natural gas hydrate resources.
