Abstract:Distributed combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems are expected to be widely adopted in the building sector in the near term owing to the superiors of the combined CCHP systems over the conventional systems with respect to the energy and exergy efficiencies. Recognizing that the rapid revolution in the Internet of Things and optimization methods enables active interaction between suppliers and consumers, demand response has gained increasing attentions, particularly in the building sector and multi-energy systems. Recognizing that few of previous study considered latent cooling power which was found to account for a significant portion of the total energy consumption of the cooling devices, the present study aims to provide a scheduling framework for a distributed CCHP system considering the latent cooling power under a time-of-use tariff. The simulation results for an industry park in China show that the proposed demand response strategy that takes into account the latent load effectively yields a declination in the daily operation cost of the CCHP system by up to 6.3%.

Abstract:Dynamic economic dispatch with optimal transmission switching is proposed for wind integrated power systems to improve wind power consumption and reduce system operating costs. Firstly, an optimal model for wind power systems is introduced based on the DC power flow equation. Furthermore, in order to solve the mixed integer programming problem for large-scale power systems, a pre-screening descending dimension algorithm is proposed, which pre-screens the total transmission lines to establish the candidate breakable line set, in where the selected lines can reduce the generation and wind curtailment cost. Meanwhile, a solution strategy for the dynamic economic dispatch model is proposed. The original integrated model is solved in two stages: line pre-screening and optimal dispatch. And big-M reduction is used to further improve solution efficiency. Consequently, the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed model and acceleration algorithm are proved in the improved IEEE24 and IEEE118 system, respectively.

Abstract:FTU (Feeder Terminal Unit) is an important device of distribution automation system, always working in bad environment. Its power dissipation and related thermal issues affect the lifetime of circuit component. When blackout in power grid comes forth, FTU will be working normally powered by the battery. Reducing the power of FTU can increase the normally working time and then increase the power grid's reliability. Traditionally, studies on energy reduction techniques of FTU have been conducted in the circuit design. Based on these previous studies, a system level low power static real-time scheduling algorithm of mixed tasks is proposed for FTU in this paper. The simulation experiment shows that this algorithm can decrease the FTU power consumption effectively.

Abstract:The development of cloud computing has accelerated the worldwide growth of internet data centers (IDCs). While a large portion of the energy consumption generated by intense computation introduces greater operation expenditures to the IDC enterprises. To manage the overall costs and utilize resources to their fullest extent, this paper introduces the concept of spatio-temporal workload allocation among the geographically distributed IDCs within a cloud, with the guarantee of the workload completion time and the consideration of computing service delay penalties by introducing the cost of inconvenience. Apart from the effort of the workload migration, the spatio-temporal variance of the renewable energies in the data center microgrids (DMGs) is fully considered in this paper. What's more, as the power consumed by the IDCs are primarily converted into heat, the waste heat recovery process is embedded in each IDC to demonstrate the effectiveness of the repurposed heat, which can be used by the residential heating demand in the thermal system, for total cost reduction and energy usage efficiency in the whole operating system. Applying real-life data traces of the electricity price, renewable energies and heating demand, these extensive evaluations demonstrate that both spatial and temporal complementary attempts on the supply side and demand side, along with power and thermal complementary efforts, can significantly reduce the overall cost for the IDC enterprise.

Cost-Efficient Scheduling of Bulk Transfers in Inter-Datacenter WANs

Abstract:With the quick growth of traffic between data centers, inefficient transfer scheduling in inter-datacenter networks can lead to a huge waste of bandwidth thus significant bandwidth cost. Previous work have explored different ways, such as software-defined WANs and dynamic pricing mechanisms, to overcome the inefficiency of inter-datacenter networks. However, there is a big challenge in addressing the fundamental conflicts between the deadline-aware transfer scheduling and minimizing the bandwidth cost. Unlike existing efforts that schedule inter-datacenter transfers under fixed link capacities, wherein some deadlines are violated and the service quality is degraded, we aim to finish all the transfers on time with as little bandwidth as possible to minimize the bandwidth cost. We take into account the variation of bandwidth price and the deadline requirements of services, and formulate the problem of cost-efficient scheduling of bulk transfers with deadline guarantee, which is shown to be NP-hard. Benefitting from the relax-and-round method, we propose a progressively-descending algorithm (PDA) to schedule bulk transfers and meet the above goals with a guaranteed approximation ratio. We apply our algorithm in a bulk transfer scheduler, Butler, and build a small-scale testbed to evaluate its efficiency. Both large-scale simulation and testbed experiment results validate the ability of our scheme on cutting down the bandwidth cost. Compared with existing approaches, it reduces up to 60% bandwidth cost and increases the network utilization by up to 140%.

Abstract:As smart grid developing in China, renewable energy gains more and more attention, and a few large farms of power plant are building. Considering wind power's instability and fluctuation, large-scale integration of it has considerable impact on the electric network and generates a series of additional costs. In this paper, we characterize the stochastic wind power via probability distribution function (pdf) and cumulative distribution function (cdf), analyze the integrated cost of wind power in the context of Dynamic Economic Dispatch (DED). Numerical examples are provided for a test system. We also give suggestions to wind power's price setting in china.

Abstract:Geo-distributed data processing is affected by many factors, some countries or regions prohibit the transmission of original user data abroad. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a non-centralized processing method for these data, but at the same time, many problems will arise. Firstly, it is unavoidable to transfer job’s intermediate data across regions, which will result in data transmission cost. Secondly, the WAN bandwidth is often much smaller than the bandwidth within clusters, which makes it easier to become the bottleneck of geo-distributed job. In addition, because the idle computing resources in the cluster may change with time, it will also cause some difficulties in task scheduling. Therefore, this paper considers the problem of task scheduling for big data jobs on geo-distributed data, considering the budget constraints on intermediate data trans-regional transmission, and without moving the original data. we design a budget-constrained task scheduling strategy CETS. Through the experimental analysis of different scenarios, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm strategy is verified.

Abstract:At present, the traditional scheduling mode of power grids generally dispatches according to the power generation cost within the safe range. Transmission costs are evenly distributed to customers according to their load ratios. There are no methods for the rational distribution of transmission costs according to the utilization degree of generation and load to transmission network resources. This traditional scheduling mode will render transmission cost distribution unfair, and it is difficult to guide reasonable load distribution in time and space. Therefore, an optimal economic scheduling method for power systems based on the whole-system-cost electricity price is proposed in this paper. For the power generation and the transmission sides, the whole-system-cost electricity price model was constructed according to the power flow tracking method. For the load side, a demand-side response model of users' responses to electricity price changes was established. Finally, the IEEE 57 node standard model was used to simulate optimal economic scheduling. The results show that the proposed method can guide the rational distribution of power flow. The power flow is shifted moderately from far away to near the power generation center, allowing for the load demand to be guided to meet nearby customers' demands and preventing the line from blocking, the latter of which is conducive to ensuring the safety of the power grid.

Abstract:With the expansion scale of interconnected power systems and refined state perception, scientific power calculations become more complex and diverse. They need faster computation speed and better scalability to support power flow calculation, reactive power optimization, and static/transient stability analysis for unit scheduling. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel cloud data center task mapping algorithm of the Stoer-Wagner binary tree (SWBT) to support accelerated executions of these calculations. Firstly, based on the block bordered-diagonal form of the admittance matrix, high-time complexity scientific power calculations are transformed into a unified multi-task decomposition-coordination directed acyclic graph (DC-DAG). And then, the critical tasks in this DC-DAG are found and the virtual machines encapsulating them are matched with physical machines in the data center preferentially. Finally, on CloudSim, a cloud computing platform, the multi-job mixed experiments of 118-13659 bus power systems are carried out. In addition, real-time workload performance is enhanced in two very large real-world power systems. Studies illustrate that SWBT can improve the underlying physical machine resource utilization and reduce data interaction transmission hops to achieve better computing acceleration performance.

Abstract:In response to the challenges brought on by the energy conservation based generation dispatch (ECGD) in China, a dynamic economic dispatch model that considers transmission losses (DED-TL) and a new solution framework are proposed to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of generation scheduling. Transmission losses are presented explicitly in the model so that the total energy consumption, consisting of both the generators' operation costs and also the transmission losses, can be well considered. The model is formulated as a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) problem that can be solved by commercial solvers. A penalty-based algorithm is proposed to address the virtual transmission loss problem brought on by negative nodal marginal costs. Three cases-a 6-bus system, the IEEE 30-bus system, and a 2746-bus system based on the electric energy system of Poland-are employed in numerical experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the better scheduling results in higher accuracy, and that good computational efficiency can be acquired via the proposed method.

Case study is conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed mode model and method in three aspects containing optimal benefit convergence progress and computational efficiency.

Abstract:Energy-intensive enterprises (EIEs) are typical kinds of industrial loads. They consume large amounts of electricity, and are very sensitive to electricity prices. Moreover, they have very good schedulability: they own various adjustable devices and dispatchable self-owned generation units, and have great flexibility in making production decisions. The characteristics of EIEs make them potentially ideal for coordinating with power systems and gaining a win-win situation, especially when the renewable energy penetration rate is high. However, problems still remain as to how to organize this coordination. In this paper, we design a decomposed coordinative scheduling (DCS) approach in which independent EIEs and the system exchange information iteratively to achieve final settlements. Based on a general modeling of EIEs, we introduce a mathematical formulation for DCS. The corresponding algorithm is also provided. We compare DCS to other scheduling approaches in case studies. It shows that DCS can significantly improve the benefits of the two sides without harming the privacy of EIEs. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Towards Optimal Electric Demand Management for Internet Data Centers

Abstract:Electricity cost is becoming a major portion of Internet data center (IDC)'s operation cost and large-scale IDCs are becoming important consumers of regional electricity markets. IDC's energy efficiency is gaining more attention by data center operators and electricity market operators. Effective IDC electric demand management solutions are eagerly sought by all stakeholders. In this paper, a mixed-integer programming model based IDC electric demand management solution is proposed, which integrates both the impacts of locational marginal electricity prices and power management capability of IDC itself. Dynamic voltage/frequency scaling of individual server, cluster server ON/OFF scheduling, and dynamic workload dispatching are optimized while complying with all the IDC system-wide and individual heterogeneous servers' operation constraints according to the IDC applications' temporal variant workload. Reduced electricity cost can be achieved together with guaranteed QoS requirement and reliability consideration by using the proposed model. World Cup '98 data is utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed solution. According to the experimental evaluation, electricity cost could be cut by more than 20% in a peak workload period and by more than 80% in a light workload period. Besides, more than 6% electricity cost could be cut by considering the impact of electricity price difference. Experimental results also reveal that higher QoS requirement and reliability consideration could result in higher electricity cost.

Abstract:The batch and online workload of Internet data centers (IDCs) offer temporal and spatial scheduling flexibility. Given that power generation costs vary over time and location, harnessing the flexibility of IDCs' energy consumption through workload regulation can optimize the power flow within the system. This paper focuses on multi-geographically distributed IDCs managed by an Internet service company (ISC), which are aggregated as a controllable load. The load flexibility resulting from spatial load regulation of online workload is taken into account. A two-step workload scheduling mechanism is adopted, and a computation-power coupling model of ISC is established to facilitate collaborative optimization in active distribution networks (ADNs). To address the model-solving problem based on the assumption of scheduling homogeneity, a model reconstruction method is proposed. An efficient iterative algorithm is designed to solve the reconstructed model. Furthermore, the Nash bargaining solution is employed to coordinate the different optimization objectives of ISC and power system operators, thereby avoiding subjective arbitrariness. Experimental cases based on a 33-node distribution system are designed to verify the effectiveness of the model and algorithm in optimizing ISC's energy consumption and power flow within the system.

Abstract:Electricity prices differ during different time periods and change from place to place. Cloud workflow applications often require geo-distributed data which is transmitted among heterogeneous servers in intra- and inter- data centers. Such varying electricity prices and data transmission time bring great challenges when optimizing the energy cost for scheduling tasks in workflow applications to heterogeneous servers in cloud data centers. In this article, we minimize the total electricity cost in a deadline constrained energy-aware workflow scheduling problem with data being geographically distributed across data centers. A scheduling algorithm is proposed. Strategies are developed to sequence workflow applications, divide deadlines and sort tasks. An adaptive local search method is presented to improve solutions during the search process which dynamically balances intensification using neighborhood structures of increasing size. Components and parameter values are statistically calibrated over a comprehensive set of random instances. The proposed algorithm is compared to modified classical algorithms for similar problems. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal for the considered problem.

Abstract:With the proliferation of various big data applications and resource demand from Internet data centers (IDCs), the energy cost has been skyrocketing, and it attracts a great deal of attention and brings many energy optimization management issues. However, the security problem for a wide range of applications, which has been overlooked, is another critical concern and even ranked as the greatest challenge in IDC. In this paper, we propose an energy cost minimization (ECM) algorithm with job security guarantee for IDC in deregulated electricity markets. Randomly arriving jobs are routed to a FIFO queue, and a heuristic algorithm is devised to select security levels for guaranteeing job risk probability constraint. Then, the energy optimization problem is formulated by taking the temporal diversity of electricity price into account. Finally, an online energy cost minimization algorithm is designed to solve the problem by Lyapunov optimization framework which offers provable energy cost optimization and delay guarantee. This algorithm can aggressively and adaptively seize the timing of low electricity price to process workloads and defer delay-tolerant workloads execution when the price is high. Based on the real-life electricity price, simulation results prove the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed algorithm.

Abstract:High-efficiency uninterruptable power supplies and sustainable energy systems are essential to realize data centers more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Considering the coupling between computing tasks and power consumption, this paper proposes a coordinated optimization model of operational scheduling of integrated energy system (IES) for data center according to computing load transfer. An IES consisting of solar photovoltaic arrays, gas engine, and organic Rankine cycle is proposed and optimized to obtain the optimum component capacities. Then, the computing tasks of servers with task shifting are modeled to characterize the arrival time, execution time, and deadline of different tasks. The operation scheduling optimization model of components in the IES with the computing task transfer is proposed to minimize the operating costs of data center and maximize the user satisfaction level of computing tasks. The impacts of objective weights on the dispatch strategies of the IES and computing tasks are discussed. The optimization results in a case study demonstrate that the data center can effectively realize the transfer of electricity and cooling loads by transferring computing tasks to improve the IES performances. The optimum dispatch strategies with task transfer saves operational cost and fuel consumption by 2.76% and 2.56%, respectively, and the carbon dioxide emission is reduced by 6.31% in non-heating season. Their benefits in heating season are 3.47%, 4.11%, and 2.17%, respectively.
