Abstract:We propose a scheme to controllably convert the wavefront of an arbitrary incident beam into a helical one by compact transformation slabs, thus enabling the output beam to carry desirable orbital angular momentum (OAM). First, based on transformation optics, a three-dimensional (3D) phase transformation between any two wavefronts by °at transformation media is established and then used to mold a wavefront of Gaussian beam into a helical one. Second, 3D FDTD simulations are performed to confirm the spiraling evolutions of the resultant field and phase, clearly demonstrating OAM generated. Further theoretical analyses show that the refractive index exhibiting a helical distribution leads to the oppositely spiral phase front and that it is feasible to produce desirable OAM by generators of unit OAM. The results not only provide an additional way to manipulate phase and photon OAM, but reciprocally shed further light on the phase structure of helical beams, which leads to a new transformation way by a surface.

Abstract:The structured beams, which can manipulate arbitrary intensity and phase of electromagnetic rays, are significant in communication and sensing. The vortex electromagnetic wave carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) exhibits the phase distribution of the helical wavefront, which can be viewed as a complete set of eigenmodes for electromagnetic waves. It provides a flexible beamforming method to achieve the azimuthal pattern diversity by the spatial superposition of multiple specific OAM modes. We have proposed a novel form of OAM wave with a two-dimensional structure called plane spiral OAM (PS-OAM), which is conducive to overlapping different modes. Based on this, the PS-OAM mode-group can be employed to modify the spatial beam structure and form structured electromagnetic beams. This kind of beam not only retains the inherent vorticity and orthogonality of the OAM waves but also tackles the difficulties in applications stemming from the singularity-caused dark zone and beam divergence of conventional OAM waves. In this paper, the construction and manipulation of the structured beams are investigated, and the properties are analyzed. The potential applications in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, orthogonal multiplexing communication, and spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) communication are envisioned.

Abstract:We present generalized expressions to calculate the orbital angular momentum for invariant beams using scalars potentials. The solutions can be separated into transversal electric TE, transversal magnetic TM and transversal electromagnetic TE/TM polarization modes. We show that the superposition of non-paraxial vectorial beams with axial symmetry can provide a well defined orbital angular momentum and that the modes superposition affects the angular momentum flux density. The results are illustrated and analyzed for Bessel beams.

Abstract:For long distance orbital angular momentum (OAM) based transmission, the conventional whole beam receiving scheme encounters the difficulty of large aperture due to the divergence of OAM beams. We propose a novel partial receiving scheme, using a restricted angular aperture to receive and demultiplex multi-OAM-mode beams. The scheme is theoretically analyzed to show that a regularly spaced OAM mode set remain orthogonal and therefore can be de-multiplexed. Experiments have been carried out to verify the feasibility. This partial receiving scheme can serve as an effective method with both space and cost savings for the OAM communications. It is applicable to both free space OAM optical communications and radio frequency (RF) OAM communications.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) using orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a recently developed physical layer transmission technique, which has obtained intensive interest among optics, millimeter-wave, and radio frequency due to its capability to enhance communication capacity while retaining an ultra-low receiver complexity. In this paper, the system model based on OAM-MDM is mathematically analyzed and it is theoretically concluded that such system architecture can bring a vast reduction in receiver complexity without capacity penalty compared with conventional line-of-sight multiple-in-multiple-out systems under the same physical constraint. Furthermore, a $4\times 4$ OAM-MDM communication experiment adopting a pair of easily realized Cassegrain reflector antennas capable of multiplexing/demultiplexing four orthogonal OAM modes of $l = {-3}$ , −2, +2, and +3 is carried out at a microwave frequency of 10 GHz. The experimental results show high spectral efficiency as well as low receiver complexity.

Abstract:In this work, we theoretically study the cavity modes with transverse orbital angular momentum in metamaterial ring based on transformation optics. The metamaterial ring is designed to transform the straight trajectory of light into the circulating one by enlarging the azimuthal angle, effectively presenting the modes with transverse orbital angular momentum. The simulation results confirm the theoretical predictions, which state that the transverse orbital angular momentum of the mode not only depends on the frequency of the incident light, but also depends on the transformation scale of the azimuthal angle. Because energy dissipation inevitably reduces the field amplitude of the modes, the confined electromagnetic energy and the quality factor of the modes inside the ring are also studied in order to evaluate the stability of those cavity modes. The results show that the metamaterial ring can effectively confine light with a high quality factor and maintain steady modes with the orbital angular momentum, even if the dimension of the ring is much smaller than the wavelength of the incident light. This technique for exploiting the modes with optical transverse orbital angular momentum may provides a unique platform for applications related to micromanipulation. Abstract:Optical geometrical transformation is a novel and powerful tool to switch orbital angular momentum (OAM) states in modern optics. We demonstrate a scheme to operate multiplication and division in OAM by Fermat’s spiral transformation. The characteristics of the output beams in the case of integer and fraction OAM operations are presented in detail. Additionally, the power weight of the output OAM modes and the interference patterns of the output beams are reported to confirm the expected ability of OAM mode conversion by Fermat’s spiral transformation. We further investigate the evolution of OAM beams in operations theoretically and experimentally. This work provides a practical way to perform an optical transformation mapping on OAM beams. It can find application in optical communications with larger OAM mode numbers as well as quantum information in high-dimensional systems.

Abstract:The analytical expression for nonparaxial electric field amplitude of the TEM0l⁎ doughnut beam with the orbital angular momentum quantum number l is derived in the far field by means of the angular spectrum representation and the stationary phase method. It is shown that the divergent angle of the far field of TEM0l⁎ doughnut beam will be smaller with the decreasing of the orbital angular momentum quantum number l or the increasing of the beam waist width w of the initial beam. And the maximal radial intensity of the beam is decreased with its propagation at different rates for different l and w.

Abstract:The cross phase (CP) opens up a new horizon for the generation and measurement of vortex beams, and the conversion between Hermite-Gaussian (HG) and Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes can be done with a CP. However, the conversion plane is in the far plane, and the width cannot be adjusted. In this article, we present a more convenient and practical mode converter between HG and LG modes based on CP combined with a lens. The feasibility of the converter for the conversion between two modes is theoretically analyzed. The conversion can be accomplished in the determined plane and the width of converted beam can be controlled by adjusting the parameter of converter. Proof-of-concept experiment is carried out to verify theoretical analysis and the experimental results are agree well with theoretical simulations. The transfer of orbital angular momentum (OAM) between two modes after passing through the converter is also analyzed. From the perspective of OAM conservation, the required parameter conditions for the converter are discussed. In principle, such a converter as proposed here might even be applied to microwave, millimeter wave, and terahertz OAM fields.

High Purity Orbital Angular Momentum of Light

Abstract:We present a novel technique for generating beams of light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) that increases mode purity and decreases singularity splitting by orders of magnitude. This technique also works to control and mitigate beam divergence within propagation distances less than the Rayleigh length. Additionally, we analyze a tunable parameter of this technique that can change the ratio of beam purity to power to fit desired specifications. Beam generation via this technique is achievable using only phase-modulating optical elements, which reduces experimental complexity and beam energy loss.

Abstract:In recent years, orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams and their generation methods have drawn increasing interest. Generating multiple OAMs in a three-dimensional space simply and efficiently is meaningful and challenging. Herein, we proposed an integrated multi-OAM generator based on the independent controlling phase division. Realized through the two-photon additive manufacturing, the device possesses a continuous surface with a diameter of 100 μm. Using the generator, arbitrary OAM modes were demonstrated, including the axial position, the number of topological charges, and the direction of rotation. The unique optical characteristics were mutually verified experimentally and through simulation. Vortex beams carrying multiple OAMs will provide more degrees of freedom to manipulate light for exciting applications such as optical communications, micromanipulation, and quantum optics.

Abstract:Complex astigmatic elliptical beams possess very high orbital angular momentum. This kind of beams has important applications in many fields, such as atomic physics and biology. An experimental method of optical torsion balance to measure the orbital angular momentum of the beams is presented in this paper. In our experiment, the absorption slice rotates under the irradiation of the beam. The angular momentum of beams is obtained by measuring the rotation angle of the absorption slice. The angular momentum of complex astigmatic elliptical beam with different parameters is measured in this paper. The dependences of orbital angular momentum on the parameters of the elliptical beams are investigated. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:In this letter, a method for the generation of multimodal vortex waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) is proposed based on the transformation optics concept. The device is equally divided into eight sectors assigned by transformed material parameters, which are determined by solving Laplace’s equation. Sectors with different phase variations from 0 to 2π can be judiciously shuffled to generate vortex beams with different modes. Full wave numerical simulations are performed to validate multimodal OAM beam generation functionality and broadband performance of the proposed device. Such an implementation method opens the door to the application of vortex waves carrying OAM in communication systems.

Abstract:Optical vortex phase beams have unique amplitudes and phase distributions, rendering them sensitive to the position and symmetry of modulating structures. This sensitivity can facilitate their applicability to optical communications. We propose a method for modulating the topological charge of input vortex beams using a pinhole screen. By changing the pinhole arrangement to match the phase of the vortex beam and considering the Fresnel diffraction theory, the transmission light field is calculated numerically. In addition, the intensity map of the adjustable topological charges is measured near the origin, with the experimental results suitably agreeing with the theoretical simulation results. The diffraction field modulated by spiral pinholes has various orbital angular momentum modes, including the increase and decrease of orbital angular momentum, especially when the incident vortex beam is more complex. The proposed method opens new possibilities for the use of vortex beams in advanced optical applications with improved capabilities and functionalities.

Abstract:By concurrently manipulating the degrees of freedom associated with polarization and orbital angular momentum (OAM), a variety of vector fields can be generated, which exhibit unique characteristics and have found extensive application in both classical and quantum optics. However, the OAM dimensions in these fields have been predominantly confined to two. Different from high-order OAM with a large topological charge, broadening the OAM dimensions beyond this limit and generating OAM spectra with multiple OAM modes can significantly enhance the scope of research. In this study, we explore vector fields with OAM dimensions exceeding ten, achieving polarization-controlled spectra in higher-dimensional OAM. Our findings not only offer a method for controlling high-dimensional OAM through polarization but also pave the way for potential applications in both classical and quantum realms utilizing high-dimensional vector states.

Abstract:The transverse beam pattern, usually observed in experiment, is a result of averaging the optical-frequency oscillations of the electromagnetic field distributed over the beam cross section. An analytical criterion is derived that these oscillations are coupled with a sort of rotation around the beam axis. This criterion appears to be in direct relation with the usual definition of the beam orbital angular momentum.
