Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationships between paternal and maternal depressive symptoms and adolescent depressive symptoms. Results: Paternal depressive symptoms were related to adolescent depressive symptoms through the mediation effect of paternal attachment, maternal attachment, the chained mediating effects of paternal involvement and paternal attachment, and the chained mediating effects of paternal involvement and maternal attachment. Maternal depressive symptoms were related to adolescent depressive symptoms through the mediating effect of paternal attachment, maternal attachment, the chained mediating effects of paternal involvement and paternal attachment, the chained mediating effects of paternal involvement and maternal attachment, the chained mediating effects of maternal involvement and paternal attachment, and the chained mediating effects of maternal involvement and maternal attachment. Additionally, both paternal and maternal depressive symptoms were significantly directly related to adolescent depressive symptoms. Overall, maternal depressive symptoms had a greater impact on adolescent depressive symptoms than paternal depressive symptoms. Conclusions: The findings support the impacts of parental depressive symptoms on child depressive symptoms through the mediating effects of parental involvement and parent-child attachment.
