Abstract:In recent years, social media has become ubiquitous and important for social networking and content sharing. And yet, the content that is generated from these websites remains largely untapped. In this paper, we demonstrate how social media content can be used to predict real-world outcomes. In particular, we use the chatter from Twitter.com to forecast box-office revenues for movies. We show that a simple model built from the rate at which tweets are created about particular topics can outperform market-based predictors. Abstract:This study examines when and why online comments from different sources and platforms influence a movie's box office receipts over time. Premised on the theory of information search, we hypothesize that consumers are more likely to engage in active search in the early stages of a movie's release due to greater choice uncertainty, and passive attention is more likely to kick in for later stages of a movie's release, as uncertainty decreases. To test the proposed hypotheses, we tracked over 1,500 sources of online expert and consumer reviews for cinematic movies released for an entire year and continuously monitored major social media sites (e.g., Twitter) for comments. We text-mined the comments to elucidate the sentiments and analyzed the data. Confirming our hypotheses, the results showed that expert reviews and pull-based peer comments have a significant influence in early stages of a movie's release, and the effects decrease over time. In contrast, the volume of comments from push-based microblog platforms have a significant influence on later box office receipts. Our research demonstrates that online opinions are not always persuasive and useful, and our findings provide insights into when consumers are likely to pay attention to which types of online opinions.

Abstract:Forecasting the box offices of movies is indispensable, whether it is for the stock investment decisions of the movie company, the movie sales strategy design of the advertising company, or the movie screening schedules of cinemas. However, this task is very challenging because it is affected by many complicated factors. In view of this complexity, we propose a method for forecasting the box offices of movies coming soon based on social media analysis. First, movie-related online reviews and their numbers are collected from microblogs. Second, several important features, i.e., the sentiment value of microblog texts, the consumers’ RFM value and the degree of moviegoers’ attention, are extracted or calculated. Subsequently, we use the extracted features to expand the parameters of the Bass model, and build two improved Bass models for forecasting the box offices of movies in the initial week and during the diffusion cycle, respectively. Finally, through fitting data progressively, we realize the forecasting task. The experimental results show that compared with the traditional forecast models and existing studies, the improved Bass method proposed in this paper has better performance, overall.

An Exploration of the Dynamics Between Social Media and Box Office Performance

Abstract:Prior studies have reported the positive impact of social media on box office performance. There is limited evidence of the dynamics of the positive impact and how box office performance influences social media. This study examines how owned social media (OSM) and earned social media (ESM) impact box office performance in a dynamic manner and vice versa in the opening week of movies. We also examine how these impacts vary with firm size of a movie's marketing company and platform specificity of where the movie is advertised. We applied the panel vector auto-regression method to analyze a merged dataset of 289 movies distributed in the Chinese movie market. We found that OSM and ESM had different impacts on box office performance. Box office performance reacted faster to ESM than to OSM and the reaction lasted longer to OSM than to ESM. In addition, the impact of OSM was more significant for large firms while ESM's impact was more significant for small firms. Finally, social media on specialized platforms did not have a faster impact on box office performance than that on general platforms. The impact on general platforms did not last longer than that on specialized platform. Overall, we recommend movie marketing firms develop tailored social media strategies by means of customizing their choices of social media based on firm size and platform specificity.

Abstract:The growing popularity of online product review forums invites the development of models and metrics that allow firms to harness these new sources of information for decision support. Our work contributes in this direction by proposing a novel family of diffusion models that capture some of the unique aspects of the entertainment industry and testing their performance in the context of very early postrelease motion picture revenue forecasting. We show that the addition of online product review metrics to a benchmark model that includes prerelease marketing, theater availability and professional critic reviews substantially increases its forecasting accuracy; the forecasting accuracy of our best model outperforms that of several previously published models. In addition to its contributions in diffusion theory, our study reconciles some inconsistencies among previous studies with respect to what online review metrics are statistically significant in forecasting entertainment good sales.

Abstract:<p>Many economic indicators including consumer confidence indices used to forecast volatility or macroeconomic outcomes, are published with a considerable time lag. To obtain a timelier measure of consumer sentiment many central bank and economic researchers are turning towards using state-of-the-art text sentiment analysis tools. We examine if there are benefits for forecasting volatility from (i) incorporating a sentiment measure derived using deep learning from Twitter messages at the one-minute level, and (ii) acknowledging specification uncertainty of the lag index in the heterogeneous autoregression (HAR) model. We present evidence from an out of sample forecasting exercise that suggests including social media sentiment can significantly improve the forecasting accuracy of a popular volatility index, particularly in short time horizons. Further, our results document large gains in predictive accuracy from a newly proposed estimator that allows for model uncertainty in the specification of the lag index when using a HAR estimator.</p>

Abstract:How to improve the predictive accuracy of box office revenue with social media data is a big challenge and is particularly important for movie distributors and cinema operators. In this research, we find that microblogging UGC (MUGC) is a significant predictor of box office revenue and has stronger predictive power than UGC on Douban! Movies (DUGC) based on our examination of 60 movies released in China in 2012. To increase the attendance rate of movies, cinema operators can consider previous valence and volume of MUGC before scheduling the current film screenings because these messages can quickly predict the future box office revenue of a movie. Besides, we find that the volume of enterprise microblogs (i.e., MGC) can predict both box office revenue and MUGC, indicating that movie distributors should optimize their online media strategy by shifting more resources to utilizing enterprise microblogging. Although rebroadcasting volume from microblogging platforms does not predict box office revenue directly, it can indirectly predict it via MGC. Accordingly, compared with third-party platforms, rebroadcasting as one of the key distinct functions of microblogging platforms also shows its usefulness in box office revenue prediction. Overall, metrics from microblogging platforms are more effective in predicting box office revenue than those from third-party platforms.In this research, we build a prediction model of movie box office revenue by empirically exploring its intricate relationships with user-generated content (UGC) as well as marketer-generated content (MGC) on a microblogging platform and UGC on a third-party platform. Our analyses are based on a panel vector autoregression (PVAR) model that is calibrated with a combination of data from Weibo (microblogging platform) and Douban! Movies (third party). Our empirical results show that microblogging UGC (MUGC) is a significant predictor of box office revenue and has stronger predictive power than UGC on Douban! Movies (DUGC). In addition, we find that the volume of enterprise microblogs (i.e., MGC) predicts box office revenue directly and also indirectly via MUGC, and MUGC thus exerts a partial mediating effect on the predictive relationship between the volume of enterprise microblogs and box office revenue. Finally, a prediction model of box office revenue using lagged box office revenue, MGC, MUGC, and DUGC is proposed, and its forecasting accuracy is found to outperform that of existing models. Abstract:As the importance and popularity of online social media has become more obvious, there are more researches aiming at making use of information from them. One important topic of this is predicting the future with social media. This paper focuses on predicting box offices using microblog. Compared with previous work which makes use of the count of related microblogs simply, the information from social media has been utilized more deeply in this paper. Two sets of features have been extracted: count based features and content based features. For the former, the information in the aspect of users, which decrease the influence of garbage microblogs, has been exploited. For content based features, a new box office oriented semantic classification method has been provided to make the features more relative with box offices. Meanwhile, more complex machine learning models such as SVM and neutral network have been applied to the prediction method. Our prediction model is more accurate and reliable. With our prediction method, the data in Tencent microblog has been utilized to predict box offices of certain movies in China. With the results, the strength of our method and predictive power of online social media can be completely demonstrated.

Abstract:Data from Online Social Networks (OSNs) are providing analysts with an unprecedented access to public opinion on elections, news, movies etc. However, caution must be taken to determine whether and how much of the opinion extracted from OSN user data is indeed reflective of the opinion of the larger online population. In this work we study this issue in the context of movie reviews on Twitter and compare the opinion of Twitter users with that of the online population of IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. We introduce new metrics to show that the Twitter users can be characteristically different from general users, both in their rating and their relative preference for Oscar-nominated and non-nominated movies. Additionally, we investigate whether such data can truly predict a movie's box-office success.

Abstract:User response to contributed content in online social media depends on many factors. These include how the site lays out new content, how frequently the user visits the site, how many friends the user follows, how active these friends are, as well as how interesting or useful the content is to the user. We present a stochastic modeling framework that relates a user's behavior to details of the site's user interface and user activity and describe a procedure for estimating model parameters from available data. We apply the model to study discussions of controversial topics on Twitter, specifically, to predict how followers of an advocate for a topic respond to the advocate's posts. We show that a model of user behavior that explicitly accounts for a user transitioning through a series of states before responding to an advocate's post better predicts response than models that fail to take these states into account. We demonstrate other benefits of stochastic models, such as their ability to identify users who are highly interested in advocate's posts.

Abstract:In this study, we draw upon literature on social influence to investigate the relationships between comments generated from online social media and product sales. Using a natural language processor, we measure the favourability (comments sentiments) as well as the visibility (volume of comments) of social media comments on the list of cinematic movie released for a year beginning in late 2010. Specifically, we study how favourability and visibility of these comments have an impact on daily product sales. We also explore if different types of social media platforms have differing impacts on product sales. The types of social media studied include expert reviews, blogs, forums, microblogs (e.g. Twitter) and network-based blogs (e.g. Facebook).
The Effects of Online User Reviews on Movie Box Office Performance: Accounting for Sequential Rollout and Aggregation Across Local Markets

Abstract:Our objective in this paper is to measure the impact (valence, volume, and variance) of national online user reviews on designated market area (DMA)-level local geographic box office performance of movies. We account for three complications with analyses that use national-level aggregate box office data: (i) aggregation across heterogeneous markets (spatial aggregation), (ii) serial correlation as a result of sequential release of movies (endogenous rollout), and (iii) serial correlation as a result of other unobserved components that could affect inferences regarding the impact of user reviews. We use daily box office ticket sales data for 148 movies released in the United States during a 16-month period (out of the 874 movies released) along with user review data from the Yahoo! Movies website. The analysis also controls for other possible box office drivers. Our identification strategy rests on our ability to identify plausible instruments for user ratings by exploiting the sequential release of movies across markets—because user reviews can only come from markets where the movie has previously been released, exogenous variables from previous markets would be appropriate instruments in subsequent markets. In contrast with previous studies that have found that the main driver of box office performance is the volume of reviews, we find that it is the valence that seems to matter and not the volume. Furthermore, ignoring the endogenous rollout decision does not seem to have a big impact on the results from our DMA-level analysis. When we carry out our analysis with aggregated national data, we obtain the same results as those from previous studies, i.e., that volume matters but not the valence. Using various market-level controls in the national data model, we attempt to identify the source of this difference. By conducting our empirical analysis at the DMA level and accounting for prerelease advertising, we can classify DMAs based on their responsiveness to firm-initiated marketing effort (advertising) and consumer-generated marketing (online word of mouth). A unique feature of our study is that it allows marketing managers to assess a DMA's responsiveness along these two dimensions. The substantive insights can help studios and distributors evaluate their future product rollout strategies. Although our empirical analysis is conducted using motion picture industry data, our approach to addressing the endogeneity of reviews is generalizable to other industry settings where products are sequentially rolled out.

Abstract:This article examines how the sentiment embedded in online comments and the quantity of comments available on a movie influence the movie's box office sales. We extend prior research in several ways. First, we show that experience attribute information available from online comments, when they become available and prevalent, appear to substitute, rather than complement the search attribute information like movie budget, cast and directorship, in influencing peoples' decisions to watch a movie. Second, comparing between comments from different types of online media, source factors appear to be important as we find that experts are less persuasive compared to peers, with whom consumers identify more. Finally, we find that the currency of the online comments should also be considered when evaluating the persuasiveness of online comments. The data for the study was collected from a wide variety of online media sources, including expert reviews and consumer comments from more than 1000 websites. This study not only proffers advice for the industry, but also contributes to the literature. Our research demonstrates that online comments are not always persuasive and useful, and our findings provide insights into when consumers are likely to pay attention to online comments.

Abstract:The film industry is one of the core industries of the digital creative industry, which has great positive externalities to the digital creative economy. Movie box office revenue is an important indicator to measure the realization of the market value of movie consumption, and it is also the basic guarantee for the sustainable development of the movie industry. This paper relies on the professional database of the Maoyan movie market to use Python software to collect a total of 830 domestic movie-related consumption characteristic data from 2017 to 2019. In this study, the stacking method in the machine learning ensemble algorithm combines the fivefold crossfolding training method based on distributed random forest, extremely randomized trees, and generalized linear models. The model is good at handling different data types. It has higher fitting and model accuracy in feature mining and model construction, so as to effectively grasp the relevant feature factors affecting movie consumption and accurately predict the future movie box office. Based on the innovative design method of model fusion, the extracted feature vector is used to build a more accurate movie box office prediction model through stacking with a fivefold crossfolding training method. It is aimed at opening the black box that affects the realization of the value of the film content consumption market in the digital age and putting forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions.

Abstract:Convergence, Ahead of Print. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the U.S. film industry, prompting major studios to release blockbuster films on streaming platforms. This study examines the impact of pandemic-related changes on the film industry by analyzing social media conversations on Twitter as a proxy for success. We introduce a novel metric to measure social word-of-mouth (sWOM) longevity for 40 movies released across different genres and franchises. Results indicate that pandemic-era films experienced shorter sWOM lifespans than pre-pandemic counterparts, and streaming releases generated shorter sWOM conversations than theatrical releases. This suggests that streaming releases risk quicker cultural obsolescence due to limited social media discussion time. This study offers valuable insights for industry practitioners navigating the evolving cinematic landscape.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This study drew on the existing decision process theory to empirically examine the effect of word of mouth (WOM) generated by social media. The prospect theory was adopted to illustrate how both the volume and valence of WOM influence a person9s decision to watch a movie through the movie quality evaluation stage. Using U.S. movie industry data and online post data from Twitter, the authors found that the effect of online WOM is well explained by the prospect theory. Particularly, findings suggest that intensively advertising a movie before its release to attract moviegoers could backfire by raising the moviegoers9 expectations.

Abstract:This study presents big data applications with quantitative theoretical models in financial management and investigates possible incorporation of social media factors into the models. Specifically, we examine three models, a revenue management model, an interest rate model with market sentiments, and a high-frequency trading equity market model, and consider possible extensions of those models to include social media. Since social media plays a substantial role in promoting products and services, engaging with customers, and sharing sentiments among market participants, it is important to include social media factors in the stochastic optimization models for financial management. Moreover, we compare the three models from a qualitative and quantitative point of view and provide managerial implications on how these models are synthetically used along with social media in financial management with a concrete case of a hotel REIT. The contribution of this research is that we investigate the possible incorporation of social media factors into the three models whose objectives are revenue management and debt and equity financing, essential areas in financial management, which helps to estimate the effect and the impact of social media quantitatively if internal data necessary for parameter estimation are available, and provide managerial implications for the synthetic use of the three models from a higher viewpoint. The numerical experiment along with the proposition indicates that the model can be used in the revenue management of hotels, and by improving the social media factor, the hotel can work on maximizing its sales.

Early Prediction of Movie Box Office Success based on Wikipedia Activity Big Data

Abstract:Use of socially generated "big data" to access information about collective states of the minds in human societies has become a new paradigm in the emerging field of computational social science. A natural application of this would be the prediction of the society's reaction to a new product in the sense of popularity and adoption rate. However, bridging the gap between "real time monitoring" and "early predicting" remains a big challenge. Here we report on an endeavor to build a minimalistic predictive model for the financial success of movies based on collective activity data of online users. We show that the popularity of a movie can be predicted much before its release by measuring and analyzing the activity level of editors and viewers of the corresponding entry to the movie in Wikipedia, the well-known online encyclopedia.

Abstract:The Stock Market is a typical complex network composed of investors, stocks, and market information. The abnormal fluctuation of the Stock Market has a strong effect on the economy of a country and even that of the world. Fueled by the herd effect of the increasingly abundant social media, Internet rumors, as an important source of market information and an exogenous financial risk, can lead to the collapse of investor confidence and the further propagation of financial risks, which can damage the financial system and even lead to social unrest. With additional availability of computing techniques, we attempt to uncover the media information effects in the stock market and seek to provide researchers with 1) a theoretical reference for a comprehensive understanding of such a complex network, 2) accurate prediction of future data, and 3) design of efficient and reliable risk intervention models. Based on the data of China’s Stock Market, this study uses machine learning to investigate social media rumors to reveal the interplay of social media rumors and stock market volatility. In this work, we find patterns from social media rumors from financial forums using machine learning, quantify social media rumors based on statistics, and analyze the mechanism of propagation and influence of social media rumors on stock market volatility using econometric models. The empirical results show that rumors play an important information transmission effect on stock market volatility and the constructed Internet Financial Forum Rumor Index is helpful to sense the potential impact of rumors, i.e., a significant lagged negative effect. These findings are of guidance for the optimization of the information environment, and can serve to promote the healthy and stable development of the stock market.
The effect of different social media marketing channels and events on movie box office: An elaboration likelihood model perspective

Abstract:Social media has become an important marketing media to attract and retain consumers. This article focuses on the movie industry and aims to investigate how different channels and events in social media marketing achieve box office success through different consumers' responses. In reference to elaboration likelihood model (ELM), we propose our research model and test hypotheses using the data of 304 movies with the information of box office, attributes, and associated social media posts. The results show that: (1) official microblog activity increases the purchase intent through changing audience's attitude while third-party mention increases purchase intent through catching audience's attention and promoting positive attitude, and there is an interaction effect between official microblog and third-party media; (2) social media marketing events related to contents introduction promote purchase intent through central route while those related to surrounding information promote purchase intent through peripheral route; and (3) movie attributes interact with marketing intensity in affecting purchase intent. Under the same marketing intensity, the marketing effect of domestic sequel movies released on popular holidays is better. Our findings provide both theoretical and practical implications.
