Abstract:Detection of weak marine electric fields is an issue of notable interest in the fields of marine biological research, monitoring of marine geological activity, and marine mineral exploration. The only way to increase sensitivity of the commonly applied self-potential (SP) method is to increase the spacing of the electrodes; however, this will also increase electrode and cable noise at the same time. This article presents the application of a dielectric polarization (DP) technique to the measurement of marine electric fields for the first time; this can achieve high-sensitivity measurements with a small electrode spacing. Under the same conditions, the sensitivity of the proposed method [3.04 V(V/m)] is 6.2x that of SP [0.49 V(V/m)]; furthermore, it is the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (44.39 dB) is 27.47 dB higher than that of SP (16.92 dB), and its limit of detection (7 mu V/m) is very notably lower than that of the SP method (260 mu V/m). The proposed scheme is therefore not only capable of detecting weak marine electric fields, but it is also developing sensor arrays; this has the potential to lead to a new observation angle for marine electric field detection.
