Abstract:For conformal metrics with conical singularities and positive curvature on 𝕊^2, we prove a convergence theorem and apply it to obtain a criterion for nonexistence in an open region of the prescribing data. The core of our study is a fine analysis of the bubble trees and an area identity in the convergence process.

Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed kth order symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor on compact Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution set for the case k >= n/2, provided the conformal class admits a k-admissible metric. These results have been proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky, Trudinger and Wang for the manifolds without boundary, and by Jin et al. and S. Chen for the locally conformally flat manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of finding closed hypersurfaces with prescribed Weingarten curvature in a large class of Riemannian manifolds. Under some sufficient conditions, we obtain an existence result by establishing a priori estimates and standard degree theory for the admissible solutions to the prescribed curvature equation. We mainly show that the primary technique developed in Urbas, Wang and the second author’s work in 2004 is flexible enough to be used in more general ambient geometry.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve a class of Neumann problems on a manifold with totally geodesic smooth boundary. As a consequence, we also solve the prescribing k-curvature problem of the modified Schouten tensor on such manifolds; that is, if the initial k-curvature of the modified Schouten tensor is positive for tau > n - 1 or negative for tau < 1, then there exists a conformal metric such that its k-curvature defined by the modified Schouten tensor equals some prescribed function and the boundary remains totally geodesic.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric on a 3-dimensional manifold M^3 such that its k-curvature equals to a prescribed function, where the k-curvature is defined by the k-th elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Einstein tensor, 1≤ k≤ 3. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution sets on manifolds when k=2 and 3, provided the conformal class admits a negative k-admissible metric with respect to the Einstein tensor.

Abstract:To study the prescribed $k$ -curvature problem of 2nd-order symmetric curvature tensors on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds, we consider a class of fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. It is proved that on a Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature and Ricci curvature bounded from below, the equation is solvable provided that all the eigenvalues of the tensor are negative. The result is applicable to the prescribed $k$ -curvature problems of modified Schouten tensor and Bakry–Émery Ricci tensor.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Abstract:This paper deals with the question of prescribing the Gaussian curvature on a disk and the geodesic curvature of its boundary by means of a conformal deformation of the metric. We restrict ourselves to a symmetric setting in which the Gaussian curvature is negative, and we are able to give general existence results. Our approach is variational, and solutions will be searched as critical points of an associated functional. The proofs use a perturbation argument via the monotonicity trick of Struwe, together with a blow-up analysis and Morse index estimates. We also give a nonexistence result that shows that, to some extent, the assumptions required for existence are necessary.

Abstract:On a $2m$-dimensional closed manifold we investigate the existence of prescribed $Q$-curvature metrics with conical singularities. We present here a general existence and multiplicity result in the supercritical regime. To this end, we first carry out a blow-up analysis of a $2m$th-order PDE associated to the problem and then apply a variational argument of min-max type. For $m>1$, this seems to be the first existence result for supercritical conic manifolds different from the sphere.

We focus on prescribing the scalar curvature function K and the boundary mean curvature H on the standard ball. Our analysis extendes previous studies by considering the scenario where the curvatures K and H are close to constants. Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a complete three dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary $\partial M$. Given smooth functions $K(x)>0$ and $c(x)$ defined on $M$ and $\partial M$, respectively, it is natural to ask whether there exist metrics conformal to $g$ so that under these new metrics, $K$ is the scalar curvature and $c$ is the boundary mean curvature. All such metrics can be described by a prescribing curvature equation with a boundary condition. With suitable assumptions on $K$,$c$ and $(M,g)$ we show that all the solutions of the equation can only blow up at finite points over each compact subset of $\bar M$, some of them may appear on $\partial M$. We describe the asymptotic behavior of the blowup solutions around each blowup point and derive an energy estimate as a consequence.

Abstract:We prove a Geroch type result for isolated conical singularity. Namely, we show that there is no Riemannian metric $g$ on $ X \# T^n $ with an isolated conical singularity which has nonnegative scalar curvature on the regular part, and is positive at some point. In particular, this implies that there is no metric on tori with an isolated conical singularity and positive scalar curvature. We also prove that a scalar flat Riemannian metric $g$ on $X \# T^n$ with finitely many isolated conical singularities must be flat, and extend smoothly across the singular points. We do not a priori assume that a conically singular point on $X$ is a manifold point; i.e., the cross section of the conical singularity may not be spherical.
