Abstract:In this paper, the kinds of polysaccharide hydrogels, different synthesis methods, adsorption mechanism, and the influence of different environmental factors on the adsorption capacity of polysaccharide hydrogels were reviewed. In recent years, various industrial and agricultural problems have been highlighted, and the pollution of heavy metal ions to water bodies has become a considerable serious phenomenon. Adsorption method is an efficient, low‐cost, and easy to implement method for removing heavy metal ions, which does not produce secondary pollution, and has been widely used in water treatment. Polysaccharides are natural polymers, and their hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amine groups provide feasibility for the synthesis of hydrogels with various structures. The synthesized polysaccharide hydrogel has the characteristics of high adsorption capacity, specific adsorption, nontoxic, and so on. In this review, the kinds of polysaccharide hydrogels and different synthesis methods were discussed first. Then, the adsorption mechanism and different adsorption modes of polysaccharide hydrogels were reviewed. Finally, the effects of different environmental factors on the adsorption capacity of polysaccharide hydrogel were studied. The future research on the adsorption of heavy metal ions by polysaccharide hydrogels was proposed.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions in industrial sewage constitute a serious threat to human health. Nanocellulose-based adsorbents are emerging as an environmentally friendly material platform for heavy metal ion removal based on their unique properties, which include high specific surface area, excellent mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. In this review, we cover the most recent works on nanocellulose-based adsorbents for heavy metal ion removal and present an in-depth discussion of the modification technologies for nanocellulose in the process of assembling high-performance heavy ion adsorbents. By introducing functional groups, such as amino, carboxyl, aldehyde, and thiol, the assembled nanocellulose-based adsorbents both remove single heavy metal ions and can selectively adsorb multiple heavy ions in water. Finally, the remaining challenges of nanocellulose-based adsorbents are pointed out. We anticipate that this review will provide indispensable guidance on the application of nanocellulose-based adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:With the processes of industrialization and urbanization, heavy metal ion pollution has become a thorny problem in water systems. Among the various technologies developed for the removal of heavy metal ions, the adsorption method is widely studied by researchers and various nanomaterials with good adsorption performances have been prepared during the past decades. In this paper, a variety of novel nanomaterials with excellent adsorption performances for Pb(II) and Cu(II) reported in recent years are reviewed, such as carbon-based materials, clay mineral materials, zero-valent iron and their derivatives, MOFs, nanocomposites, etc. The novel nanomaterials with extremely high adsorption capacity, selectivity and particular nanostructures are summarized and introduced, along with their advantages and disadvantages. And, some future research priorities for the treatment of wastewater are also prospected.

Abstract:Water pollution is caused by heavy metals, minerals, and dyes. It has become a global environmental problem. There are numerous methods for removing different types of pollutants from wastewater. Adsorption is viewed as the most promising and financially viable option. Nanostructured materials are used as effective materials for adsorption techniques to extract metal ions from wastewater. Many types of nanomaterials, such as zero-valent metals, metal oxides, carbon nanomaterials, and magnetic nanocomposites, are used as adsorbents. Magnetic nanocomposites as adsorbents have magnetic properties and abundant active functional groups, and unique nanomaterials endow them with better properties than nonmagnetic materials (classic adsorbents). Nonmagnetic materials (classic adsorbents) typically have limitations such as limited adsorption capacity, adsorbent recovery, poor selective adsorption, and secondary treatment. Magnetic nanocomposites are easy to recover, have strong selectivity and high adsorption capacity, are safe and economical, and have always been a hotspot for research. A large amount of data has been collected in this review, which is based on an extensive study of the synthesis, characterization, and adsorption capacity for the elimination of ions from wastewater and their separation from water. The effects of several experimental parameters on metal ion removal, including contact duration, temperature, adsorbent dose, pH, starting ion concentration, and ionic strength, have also been investigated. In addition, a variety of illustrations are used to describe the various adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm models, providing insight into the adsorption process.

Abstract:Recently, more and more attention has been centered on developing cheaper, highly efficient, environmentally friendly adsorbents for the removal of metal ions from industrial effluents. The present work deals with the removal of metal ions from an aqueous solution using a highly efficient, biodegradable adsorbent from hydrogel prepared by the free radical graft polymerization of sugarcane bagasse with acrylic acid and acrylamide using N, N-methylene-bis-acrylamide as a crosslinker. FTIR and SEM/EDX spectroscopies were used to characterize the structure and the morphology of adsorbent before and after the metal ions adsorption. The effects of pH, contact time, and initial concentration of metal ion on the adsorption capacity were studied. The adsorption equilibrium time of Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+ were 60, 90, and 180 min, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ were 268, 700, and 320 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption data were fit to often-used models for adsorption kinetics and isotherms. It was determined that the experimental results were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order equation and Langmuir adsorption isotherms.
Porous sodium alginate/cellulose nanofiber composite hydrogel microspheres for heavy metal removal in wastewater

Abstract:High adsorption capacity, high adsorption rate and reusable adsorbents are urgent needed for removing heavy metals from wastewater. In this study, porous sodium alginate/cellulose nanofiber (SA/CNF) composite hydrogel microspheres were prepared by combining sodium alginate with cellulose nanofibers by microfluidics technology and adding polyethylene glycol (PEG) as pore making agent. The SA/CNF composite hydrogel microspheres could efficiently adsorb heavy metals (Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+) in wastewater. The influencing factors of adsorption process, including pH, temperature, initial concentration, coexisting ions and aquatic environments, were systematically discussed. The adsorption process was more consistent with Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model in batch system, indicating the adsorption process was mainly chemical adsorption. The adsorption capacity to Pb2+ obtained by Langmuir model was as high as 544.66 mg/g at 20 °C. Fixed-bed column adsorption experiments demonstrated the excellent performance of the as-prepared SA/CNF microspheres for treatment of the flowing wastewater in a column system. Overall, a highly practical adsorption process based on hydrogel adsorbents was developed for the removal of heavy metals from actual wastewater.

Adsorption-based methods are simple, efficient, and broadly used to eliminate heavy metals. Conventional adsorption materials have the problems of secondary environmental contamination. Hydrogels are considered effective adsorbents, and those prepared from biopolymers are biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, safe to handle, and increasingly used to adsorb heavy metal ions.AIM OF REVIEW: The natural origin and easy degradability of biopolymer hydrogels make them potential for development in environmental remediation. Its water absorption capacity enables it to efficiently adsorb various pollutants in the aqueous environment, and its internal pore channels increase the specific surface area for adsorption, which can provide abundant active binding sites for heavy metal ions through chemical modification.KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT OF REVIEW: As the most representative of biopolymer hydrogels, polysaccharide-based hydrogels are diverse, physically and chemically stable, and can undergo complex chemical modifications to enhance their performance, thus exhibiting superior ability to remove contaminants. Abstract:Here we report the adsorption of heavy metal ions from wastewater by the pellet material () of iron tailings (IT) compounded with sodium alginate (SA) as a regenerable adsorbent. The adsorption capacities of on Zn2+, Cu2+, Pb2+ and Ni2+ were 1.748 mg/g, 2.404 mg/g, 10.000 mg/g and 1.279 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption behavior would be in accordance with the Langmiur isothermal adsorption model, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the intra-particle diffusion model, indicating that the adsorption process was mainly controlled by monolayer chemisorption on heterogeneous surfaces, and that the adsorption proceeded spontaneously due to intermolecular interactions. The selective adsorption of can be represented as exhibited Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Zn2+ > Ni2+ under competitive adsorption conditions. The adsorption mechanisms mainly include surface physical adsorption, ion exchange, functional group complexation, precipitation, electrostatic attraction, etc. This work opens up a new direction for designing stimuli-responsive materials for energy-efficient and sustainable heavy metal ions adsorption and water purification, while the recycling of iron tailings contributes to the sustainable development of China's iron ore processing industry. It fully conforms to the concept of clean production and efficient utilization of industrial solid waste materials.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industrialization, water pollution is becoming increasingly serious. Industrial wastewater contains a large number of heavy metal ions and organic dye molecules, which will pose a great threat to the environment and human health if not treated properly. Adsorption is one of the most commonly used water treatment technologies. Compared with traditional zeolite and activated carbon materials, nanomaterials have the characteristics of large specific surface area, high porosity, abundant active sites and case of modification, which have attracted increasingly attentions in the field of adsorption and separation. Novel nanomaterials, including graphene oxides (GO), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous organic polymer (POPs), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and layered double hydroxide (LDH), have shown potential advantages in wastewater treatment. In this paper, the structural characteristics, adsorption performance and adsorption mechanism of new types of adsorption nanomaterials were summarized, and the research progresses of removal of heavy metals and dyes from water by nanomaterials in recent years were reviewed. The challenges and prospects of this area were also discussed.

Abstract:Chemical water pollution poses a threat to human beings and ecological systems. The purification of water to remove toxic organic and inorganic pollutants is essential for a safe society and a clean environment. Adsorption-based water treatment is considered one of the most effective and economic technologies designed to remove toxic substances. In this article, we review the recent progress in the field of nanostructured materials used for water purification, particularly those used for the adsorption of heavy metal ions and organic dyes. This review includes a range of nanostructured materials such as metal-based nanoparticles, polymer-based nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials, bio-mass materials, and other types of nanostructured materials. Finally, the current challenges in the fields of adsorption of toxic materials using nanostructured materials are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The manuscript discusses the role of polysaccharides and their derivatives in the removal of metal ions from industrial wastewater. Quick modernization and industrialization increase the amount of various heavy metal ions in the environment. Heavy metals can cause various diseases in humans and also drastic environmental hazards. In this review, the recent advancement for the adsorption of heavy metal ions from wastewater by using different methods has been studied. Various natural polymers and their derivatives act as effective adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions from the wastewater released from the industries and the treated water released into the environment can decrease the probability of diseases in humans and environmental hazards. From the literature surveys, it was concluded that the removal of heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater is beneficial for humans as well as for environment. Graft copolymers act as the most efficient adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions and most of these follow the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order model of kinetics.

Abstract:<p>The science of interface between the inorganic pollutants (heavy metal and metalloid ions) and the adsorbents is gaining increasing interest for wastewater remediation applications to mitigate the emerging issue of water scarcity. Over the recent past, metal oxides and their composites have shown immense interest as novel adsorbents. The ample surface active sites, tunable surface chemistry, ease to synthesize and functionalization, high accessible surface area, economic viability, and good recyclability make the metal oxide-based nanomaterials potential adsorbents for fast and effective removal of a wide range of heavy metal and metalloid ions. The present article critically reviews the recent developments in surface chemistry and structural engineering of variable metal oxides and their composites for the adsorptive removal of arsenic, chromium, lead, cadmium, and mercury-based ions from the contaminated water. The various parameters like pH, coexisting ions, concentration and types of pollutants, temperature, etc., which govern the interfacial chemistry and interaction pathways, are discussed to understand the adsorption process. The technical challenges and futuristic directions are emphasized to improve the adsorption performance and the reusability of metal oxides-based nanomaterials, including their indulgence at an industrial scale to mark their commercial viability for real-time applications, a motive towards water security.</p>

Abstract:Hydrogels are effective adsorbents for removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater due to their three-dimensional network and functional groups. In this paper, an eco-friendly hydrogel based on the polysaccharide extracted from the over-breeding macroalgae Enteromorpha prolifera was constructed and evaluated as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. DFT calculation results confirmed that the carboxyl and sulfate groups of the Enteromorpha prolifera polysaccharides had certain chemical interactions with Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ , which guarantee the high adsorption capacity for them. The interpenetration strategy used to construct the polysaccharide-based double network hydrogel, through which the mechanical properties, adsorption performance and recyclability of the hydrogel get strengthened synchronously. Overall, the constructed hydrogel is a competitive candidate material for heavy metal ion adsorption because of its low cost and biocompatibility, through which an innovative application of Enteromorpha prolifera from waste to treasure has been realized.

Abstract:Heavy metals in wastewater and soil pose serious threats to the ecological environment and human health. Chemical modification and composite design are the main design strategies for high-performance heavy metal adsorbents. However, in this study, a unique way was adopted to improve the adsorption performance of MnO 2 by tailoring its hollow mesoporous structure (HMN). Unmodified HMN which has good stability under acidic conditions was directly used for adsorption and fixation of heavy metals in wastewater and soil. The adsorption capacity of HMN has been greatly improved compared with other MnO 2 adsorbents, and its adsorption capacities for Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ reached 897.0, 437.5 and 354.3 mg g −1 , respectively. Such high adsorption performance is rarely seen in manganese-based adsorbents. Purification results of laboratory wastewater and industrial wastewater showed that it has good application prospect for actual environmental water samples. The adsorption mechanism mainly includes physical adsorption, electrostatic adsorption, surface complexation (oxygen sites and hydroxyl groups) and ion exchange between Na + and heavy metal ions. In addition, HMN can effectively passivate heavy metals in contaminated soil and reduce their leaching concentration to improve soil safety. This improvement in the performance of adsorbents by tailoring their structures is instructive and provides insight and approach for the design and preparation of advanced adsorbents.

Construction of Active Sites in Porous Organic Polymers for Various Heavy Metal Ions Capture

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution is directly related to human health and life safety, and the development of broad-spectrum and high-efficiency heavy metal adsorbents is expected to solve the problem of coexistence of multiple heavy metal pollutants in industrial wastewater. A triptycene-based porous organic polymer (TPOP) with high specific surface area was produced by crosslinking three-dimensional rigid triptycene monomer through the simple Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. Then, a broad-spectrum heavy metal ions adsorption active site (TPOP-CH(2)EDTA) was constructed in TPOP by grafting of ethylenediamine and sodium chloroacetate. The obtained TPOP-CH(2)EDTA showed a micro/mesoporous structure, with the main micropore size of 1.6 nm and the BET surface area of 634 m(2)/g, which facilitates the transfer and coordination of heavy metal ions. TPOP-CH(2)EDTA has a broad-spectrum adsorption for heavy metal ions, like Ag(I), Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Co(II), Sn(IV), Pb(II), Cd(II), Fe(III), Cr(III) are investigated, respectively, and the removal efficiency are all higher than 98%. Taking Pb(II) as a typical heavy metal pollutant, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) is calculated up to 184.5 mg/g by the Langmuir model. The kinetic study shows that it is a Pseudosecond-order adsorption, fast adsorption rate, and the kinetic constant k(2) of 0.0173 g.mg(-1).min(-1). After 5 recycling use, the removal efficiency of Pb(II) is still as high as 95.8%. More significantly, the removal efficiency of Pb(II) and Cu(II) in their mixture solution is either higher than 99%. For the complex real water containing large amounts of inorganic salts, like Ca(II), Mg(II), K(I), Na(I) ions, and organic compounds, the removal efficiency of Pb(II) and Cu(II) still maintains higher than 90%. Therefore, a broad-spectrum heavy metal ion adsorption active site is constructed by controlling the microstructure of porous organic polymers (such as specific surface area, pore size and adsorption site density), which provides a scheme for the coordinated removal of mixed heavy metal ions in complex water systems.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in aquatic system has been identified as a global threat to human health and environment safety. Adsorption is one of the most efficient, available and economical techniques for metal removal from wastewater. However, this promising approach depends on the development of highly cost-effective and sustainable adsorbents. The porous organic polymers (POPs) as new-generation adsorbents for segregation of metal contaminants from water have demonstrated tremendous potential and gained worldwide attention, owing to their extraordinary physicochemical properties and unique advantages, such as readily tailorable porosity,huge surface area, excellent chemical/thermal stability, high ease of synthesis, tunable functionality and architectural diversity as well as high densities of strong adsorption sites. Herein we review the state-of-the-art technical and scientific developments in the design, synthesis and applications of POPs-based adsorbents for water purification and give an overview comparission of current methods as membrane separation, chemical, electric, and photocatalytic-based. Future perspectives for achieving high adsorption efficiency and adsorption capacity are further discussed to motivate future contributions and explore new possibilities in wastewater treatment.
