Abstract:Aromatic VOCs, like toluene, have recently attracted increasing attention for the treatment under the carbon peaking and neutrality policy. Catalytic oxidation, characterized by high efficiency and low production of secondary pollutants, has become the mainstream technology for toluene elimination. Thereinto, developing efficient and stable catalysts is essential. This work overviewed different types catalysts for oxidizing toluene, including multi-metal catalysts, high-entropy catalysts, core-shell catalysts, and post-treatment techniques for synthesized catalysts. Additionally, the catalytic reaction mechanisms and catalyst stability were elaborated. Based on the investigations, the ideas for designing novel catalysts in the future were tried to be proposed that the high-entropy catalysts and the integration of heterogeneous elements, morphology adjustment, and surface treatment should be appreciated. Meanwhile, operando or quasi-in situ technology combining with the simulation must be performed for deeply comprehending the oxidation reaction mechanisms. For the investigation of poisoning resistance, one more toxic substance should be considered, which needed to explore new anti-poisoning strategies and methods for essential resistance. All these aspects might promote developing catalyst and understanding catalysis in the field of catalytic oxidation for toluene.

Abstract:It is well known that urbanization and industrialization have resulted in the rapidly increasing emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are a major contributor to the formation of secondary pollutants (e.g., tropospheric ozone, PAN (peroxyacetyl nitrate), and secondary organic aerosols) and photochemical smog. The emission of these pollutants has led to a large decline in air quality in numerous regions around the world, which has ultimately led to concerns regarding their impact on human health and general well-being. Catalytic oxidation is regarded as one of the most promising strategies for VOC removal from industrial waste streams. This Review systematically documents the progresses and developments made in the understanding and design of heterogeneous catalysts for VOC oxidation over the past two decades. It addresses in detail how catalytic performance is often drastically affected by the pollutant sources and reaction conditions. It also highlights the primary routes for catalyst deactivation and discusses protocols for their subsequent reactivation. Kinetic models and proposed oxidation mechanisms for representative VOCs are also provided. Typical catalytic reactors and oxidizers for industrial VOC destruction are further discussed. We believe that this Review will provide a great foundation and reference point for future design and development in this field.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are poisonous and regarded as the paramount source for the formation of secondary organic aerosols, ozone, and photochemical smog, greatly affecting human health and environment quality. In order to abate VOC emission, catalytic oxidation is widely applied in industries and is believed to be an efficient and economically feasible way for the elimination of VOCs. This review is primarily concentrated on summarizing the recent progress and developments in the catalytic oxidation of various VOCs over Pd-supported catalysts. Despite their high catalytic performances at much lower temperatures, the wide use of Pd-supported catalysts in the industry has been limited by their high cost, low thermal stability, and incomplete oxidation of VOCs. Hence, the intrinsic properties of the active sites and supports, the reaction conditions, the deactivation mechanism, and the strategy to reveal the catalytic oxidation pathway are also systematically summarized. This review aims to give a deep comprehension and guidance for the development of efficient and cost-effective Pd-supported catalysts in the near future.

Abstract:<p>Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with the properties of volatility, toxicity and diffusivity pose a serious threat to human health and eco-environment. Catalytic oxidation technology has been considered as a highly efficient option for the treatment of VOCs. This review systematically summarizes the recent processes and advances on catalytic elimination of VOCs over nanoparticles catalysts. Firstly, catalytic performances of catalysts for VOC degradation are evaluated and compared on the basis of unified performance metrics. Secondly, catalytic mechanisms of VOC oxidation, based on experimental and theoretical studies, are systematically introduced. Then, catalytic reactors employed in VOC elimination processes are summarized. In particular, photothermocatalysis by integrating (thermo)catalysis with photocatalysis is also elucidated. Lastly, the perspectives to the scientific issues and challenges faced, as well as the future outlooks are proposed. Collectively, this review will provide theoretical and experimental foundation for rational fabrication and application of nanoparticles catalysts toward VOC elimination in future.</p>

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), one type of pollutant which not only causes a series of environmental issues but does extreme harm to human health, have attracted extensive attention. Therefore, it is urgent to treat VOCs to reduce their emissions and control terminal treatment. Catalytic oxidation is considered as a promising technology for VOCs removal due to its low energy consumption, high safety coefficient, and no secondary pollutants. This review discusses the oxidation mechanism of representative VOCs primarily. It further summarizes advances for VOCs removal catalysts, mainly supported noble metal catalysts (SNMCs) and transition metal oxides (TMOs) with economical and effective catalytic oxidation in recent years. It highlights the influence of reaction conditions and a series of factors on catalytic performance for VOCs. It also addresses how water vapor, SO2, and CO2 affect the deactivation of catalysts and proposes corresponding regeneration approaches. It gives the future directions for developing effective and stable catalysts for VOCs oxidation at lower temperatures. This review will provide an informative reference for designing excellent catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are considered one of the significant contributors to air pollution because they are toxic, difficult to remove, come from a wide range of sources, and can easily cause damage to the environment and human health. There is an urgent need for effective means to reduce their emissions. The current treatment technologies for VOCs include catalytic oxidation, adsorption, condensation, and recovery. Catalytic oxidation technology stands out among the others thanks to its high catalytic efficiency, low energy requirement, and lack of secondary pollution. The difficulty of this technology lies in the development of efficient catalysts. The research on loaded noble metal catalysts and non-noble metal oxide catalysts in this area over the past few years is briefly described in this work. Firstly, the catalytic destruction mechanism of organic volatile compounds is introduced. Secondly, the effects of structural modulation during catalytic oxidation, such as the adjustment of noble metal particle size and morphology, metal doping, and defect engineering, on the conformational relationships are discussed. Finally, the challenges faced by thermal catalytic oxidation for the degradation of VOCs are discussed, and the prospects for its development are presented.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have become one of the most serious threats to human health and eco-environment owing to their volatility, toxicity and diffusivity properties, etc. Catalytic oxidation strategy has exhibited high efficiency in the treatment of VOCs. More and more stringent emission legislations offer new opportunities for zeolites as efficient catalysts for the completely oxidations of VOCs because of their unique structures and excellent properties. This review systematically summarizes the progresses and developments made in the design of zeolite-based catalysts for VOCs oxidations in recent decades. It also gives prominence to the features of the zeolites on the catalytic performances in the oxidations of VOCs. We believe that this review will facilitate the design of efficient catalysts for catalytic oxidations of VOCs in the future.

Abstract:Air pollution, particularly for toxic and harmful compounds to humans and the environment, has aroused increasing public concerns. Among air pollutants, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main sources of air pollution. Many attempts have been made to control VOCs using catalysts, plasma, photolysis, and adsorption. Among them, oxidative catalysis by noble metals or transition metal oxides is considered one of the most feasible and effective methods to control VOCs. This paper reviews the experimental achievements on the abatement of VOCs using noble metals, transition metals and modified metal oxide catalysts. Although the catalytic degradation of VOCs appears to be feasible, there are unavoidable problems when only catalysis treatments are applied to the field. Therefore, catalysts including hybrid processes are developed to improve the removal efficiency of VOCs. This review addresses new hybrid treatments to remove VOCs using catalysts, including hybrid treatment combined with plasma, photolysis, and adsorption. The mechanism of the oxidation of VOCs by catalysts is explained by adsorption-desorption principles, such as the Langmuir-Hinshelwood, Eley-Rideal, and Mars-van-Krevelen mechanisms. A π-backbonding interaction between unsaturated compounds and transition metals is introduced to better understand the mechanism of VOC removals. Finally, several factors affecting the catalytic activities, such as support, component ratio, preparation method, metal loading, and deactivation factor, are discussed.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from industrial processes have high stability, low activity, and toxicity which cause continuous harm to human health and the atmospheric environment. Catalytic combustion has the advantages of low energy consumption and low cost and is expected to be one of the most effective methods to remove VOCs. At present, the selection of low cost, high activity, and durability catalysts are still a difficult problem. Industrial emissions of VOCs contain a certain amount of aromatic hydrocarbons; these substances are highly toxic substances, and, once inhaled by the human body, will cause serious harm to health. In this paper, the principle, advantages, and disadvantages of VOCs processing technology are analyzed in detail, and the catalytic combustion of aromatic hydrocarbons in VOCs is reviewed, including catalyst, reaction conditions, catalyst selection, inactivation reasons, and structure use. In addition, the deactivation effects of chlorine and sulfur on catalysts during the catalytic combustion of VOCs are discussed in detail. Finally, on the basis of literature research, the prospect of catalytic combustion of VOCs is presented, which provides influential information for further research on VOCs processing technology.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are toxic and contribute significantly to the formation of the photochemical smog, which has remarkable impact to the air quality; therefore, the research on the removal of VOCs has attracted increasing interests during the last decade. This review covers the recent developments in catalytic combustion of VOCs over non-noble metal catalysts including mixed metal oxide catalysts, perovskite catalysts and Au-containing catalysts. The effect of water vapor, coke formation and the effect of supports on the catalytic combustion process will be discussed. The concept of an adsorption/catalytic combustion dual functional system is introduced and several examples of such systems are evaluated. To develop efficient and cost effective VOC removal technologies, further research in catalytic combustion needs to develop novel non-noble metal catalysts and adsorbents, and improve the understanding of catalytic mechanisms involved.

Abstract:The literature about photocatalytic oxidation in volatile organic compounds is surveyed and systematically categorized based on the types of photocatalytic materials. The methods of improving photocatalytic activity are studied, and the deactivation process of photocatalyst is discussed. The reaction mechanism is summarized according to the charge separation process and the classification of reactive oxygen species. The health and environmental problems caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have attracted wide attention. Photocatalytic technology provides a green and sustainable way for VOCs removal. How to build a highly efficient and stable photocatalyst is of great significance to promote the practical application of photocatalysis technology. In this review, the literatures on photocatalytic oxidation in VOCs are surveyed and systematically categorized based on the types of photocatalytic materials. Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the crucial outdoor as well as indoor air pollutants. Recently, the elimination of volatile organic compounds is become more attractive due to its potentiality of long-term human health effects. Among the different existing methods for the removal of VOCs, the catalytic combustion is the best convenient method due to its operational simplicity, cost effectiveness, high efficiency and industrial acceptability. Various perovskite oxides have been widely studied as suitable catalysts for the removal of VOCs because of their tunable physico-chemical properties, compositional/structural exibility and high thermochemical stability. The morphology, material composition and surface as well as bulk properties of perovskite oxides is the key determining factors for catalytic efficiency. The suitable metal or non-metal doping, controlling morphology (nano-structuring, three-dimensional ordered microporous (3DOM) building) and hybrid construction (perovskite as support for other active catalysts and other oxides as support for active perovskite catalyst) may have a remarkable effect on the surface as well as bulk properties and consequently the catalytic efficiency for ther removal reactions of VOCs are also effected. In this review article, different aspects of the current development in perovskite oxides catalysts for VOCs combustion with a special highlighting on the material designing, like doping, morphology controlling, surface modication and hybrid construction are presented.

Abstract:In order to eliminate the damage of volatile organic compound(VOCs) to our health,a VOCs clearance device based on adsorption catalysis techniques was designed.VOCs gasses were greatly adsorbed by the rotating adsorption rotary of the device;VOCs gasses were desorbed by heat and handled by catalytic combustion.The whole process was tuned by controllers,using the discrete PID control algorithm.The practical application shows that equipment functions is well in working,and can effectively eliminate harmful gasses as well as clean the air.

This perspective offers a comprehensive analysis of the structure and composition of zeolites, serving as a foundation for understanding their varied performances in the catalytic oxidation of VOCs. Furthermore, it shows a range of challenges and opportunities aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reducing the cost of zeolite-based catalysts for their potential application in the catalytic oxidation of VOCs.

Abstract:The severe hazard of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) to human health and the natural environment makes their abatement technology a key topic of global environmental research. Due to the existence of Cl, the byproducts of CVOCs in the catalytic combustion process are complex and toxic, and the possible generation of dioxin becomes a potential risk to the environment. Well-qualified CVOC catalysts should process favorable low-temperature catalytic oxidation ability, excellent selectivity, and good resistance to poisoning, which are governed by the reasonable adjustment of acidity and redox properties. This review overviews the application of different types of multicomponent catalysts, that is, supported noble metal catalysts, transition metal oxide/zeolite catalysts, composite transition metal oxide catalysts, and acid-modified catalysts, for CVOC degradation from the perspective of balance between acidity and redox properties. This review also highlights the synergistic degradation of CVOCs and NOx from the perspective of acidity and redox properties. We expect this work to inspire and guide researchers from both the academic and industrial communities and help pave the way for breakthroughs in fundamental research and industrial applications in this field.

Abstract:Since the environmental hazards of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are well known, heterogeneous catalysis has become one of the most popular methods to treat VOCs due to its environmental friendliness and simplicity of operation. Although a large number of reports have reviewed the application of catalytic oxidation for the degradation of VOCs, relatively few reports are based on this direction of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF derivatives. Herein, this paper reviews the recent applications of heterogeneous catalytic technologies in the degradation of VOCs, including photocatalysis, thermal catalysis and other catalytic approaches. The applications of MOFs and their derivatives in VOCs degradation, such as the progress of MOF-derived metal oxides in the treatment of toluene, were highlighted. The mechanisms of VOCs degradation by different catalytic approaches were systematically presented. Finally, we presented the views and directions of VOCs treatment technology development. We hope that this reaction type-oriented review will provide important insights into MOFs and MOF-derived materials for VOCs pollution control.

Abstract:The development of technologies for highly efficient treatment of emissions containing low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) remains an important challenge. Catalytic oxidation with ozone (catalytic ozonation) is useful for the oxidative decomposition of VOCs, particularly aromatic compounds, under ambient temperature conditions. Only inexpensive transition metal oxides are required as catalysts, and Mn-based catalysts are widely used for catalytic ozonation. This review describes the oxidation reaction mechanisms, reaction pathways of aromatic hydrocarbons, and dependence of the catalytic ozonation activity on the reaction conditions. The reasons why Mn oxides are effective in catalytic ozonation are also explained. The structure of the catalytic active sites and the types of supporting materials contributing to the reaction are also discussed in detail, with the aim of establishing a VOC control technology. In addition, recent progress in catalytic oxidation processes using ozone as an oxidant has been outlined, focusing on catalyst materials and reaction conditions.

Abstract:Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are abundant and ubiquitous, causing severe damage to the ecological environment and human health. Their control and treatment are urgently needed. Catalytic oxidation is a promising remediation technology, particularly suitable for the end − of − pipe treatment of VOCs. Developing highly efficient catalysts is crucial to the wide adaptation of this technology. Zeolite − supported metallic catalysts are among the best choices due to their excellent porosity and structure, adjustable acidity and high stability, which are essential to the catalyst performance. In this review, we present the state-of-the-art in zeolite-based catalyst development, with a focus on three typical ones - ZSM − 5 (MFI), beta (BEA) and X−/Y − zeolite (FAU), for VOC oxidation. Specifically, we examine their chemical characteristics, active center dispersion and stability, the structure, surface acidity and hydrophobicity of the support, and elucidate the synergy between the active centers and the support. Moreover, we document the detailed preparation procedures to modulate these aspects of catalysts, providing a comprehensive guide to designing zeolite − based catalysts for VOC emission control.
