Abstract:In this article, a method for the realization of conical beam by means of leaky wave antennas (LWAs) is presented. By cutting symmetrical slots in the substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) transmission line and loading inductive metal posts, a SIW-LWA achieves continuous beam scanning from backward to forward. The proposed subarray antenna is made from a single layer of printed circuit board, which gives it a low profile and low manufacturing cost. The proposed antenna consists of two main components: the quadrilateral array and a pair of one-to-four power dividers. Four identical subarray antennas are spliced together to form the quadrilateral array, and the conical directional pattern with a wide scanning range is achieved by the beam synthesis of the antennas. Due to the symmetry of the antenna structure, the distribution of the surface current is also symmetric, which effectively suppresses cross-polarization over the entire operating band. In addition, inductive metal posts are loaded into the SIW structure to suppress the open stop band (OSB) effect, offering the antenna broadside radiation capability. At the same time, the operating band of the antenna is extended by eliminating the OSB effect. The LWA is worked in the operating frequency band of 23.5–40.5GHz. The proposed antenna has a sweep angle of almost 110 ◦ , and its cross-polarization suppression reaches a level of 36dB over the entire band. The characteristics of the antenna such as simple structure, cross polarization suppression capability, and wide scanning range make it a competitive option for vehicle communication and fuze detection.
