Abstract:The ice sheet on Martian Arctic contains valuable information about the historical climate changes on Mars. The Northern Plains of Mars mainly consist of the Northern Residual Ice Cap (NRIC), the North Polar Layered Deposits (NPLD) made of water ice and dust, and the Basal Unit (BU). In this study, we extract stratified information from the Martian North Pole underground and extract the echo power underground to conduct an in-depth analysis of the NPLD. We calculated the complex dielectric constant of ice dust mixtures in the Martian North Pole NPLD sedimentary layer (2–11 meters thick) using MacGregor’s thin layer reflection model and Maxwell Garnett mixing formula, and analyzed the dust content in these layers. In addition, this study will utilize dual band data of SHARAD, center frequency at 22.5 MHz and 17.5 MHz respectively, to evaluate the loss tangent of these sedimentary layers. Through these analyses, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the subsurface characteristics of the Martian North Pole, providing valuable data for exploring the geological history and climate evolution of Mars.
