Abstract:Photocatalytic ozonation (PCO) is widely recognized as a highly effective technique for the elimination of refractory organic contaminants from wastewater. Herein, efficient WO3 nanofibers (NFs) for visible-light-driven PCO was developed using a thermal tuning strategy. Through simply adjusting the calcination temperature of electrospun nanofiber precursors, the morphology, crystallinity, oxygen vacancy content and specific surface area of the resulting WO3 NFs can be readily modulated. As the temperature increased from 400 to 700 degrees C, the crystallinity and oxygen vacancy content of WO3 NFs increased, leading to the enhanced oxalic acid (OA) degradation efficiency and reaction kinetics. Based on electrochemical test, free radical identification and density-functional theory simulation, it was found that higher crystallinity and more oxygen vacancy promoted the adsorption of O-3 molecules and the photogenerated carriers transfer, boosting the production of abundant center dot OH for the rapid degradation of OA. No significant improvement in OA degradation was observed for WO3 NFs calcined at 800 degrees C, resulted from the decreased specific surface area and damage of one-dimensional structure. The optimized WNF-700 achieved nearly 100 % removal of OA by PCO in 25 min with an apparent zero-order rate constant of 3.96 mg L-1 min(-1), superior to previously reported catalysts.
