Abstract:Owing to many problems of the detriment by large amount of organic reagents, high cost and difficulty of industrialization, development of high-efficiency economical technologies for uranium extraction is an irresistible trend to support steady supply of nuclear energy. Herein, a novel fibrous adsorbent, named as AO-HPE fibers, was prepared by introduction of amidoxime groups using the green vapor-phase grafting polymerization (VPGP) technology of monomer acrylonitrile (AN). Gaseous AN was grafted onto the ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers at 80 °C in the enclosed evaporation and condensation reflux system. The innovative technology not only endowed synthetic process high monomer utilization ratio but also excellent environmental friendliness. The AO-HPE fibers exhibited an appreciable calculated maximum adsorption capacity (Q m) of 1144.94 mg·g-1 in uranium solution and an adsorption capacity of 14.11 mg·g-1 in simulated seawater. Meanwhile, the higher uranium selectivity than main competing ion vanadium (adsorption mass ratio was almost 5) was achieved. The adsorption process accorded closely with chemisorption mechanism. This work provided a novel idea for the synthetic method of adsorbents for uranium extraction, and inspired the sustainable technologies for grafting polymerization of monomer AN.

Abstract:Seawater reserves about 4.5 billion tons of uranium, if properly extracted, could be a sustainable green energy resource for hundreds of years, alternating its limited terrestrial ore and reducing the CO 2 emitted from fossil fuels. The current seawater uranium adsorbents suffer neither economically viable nor adsorption efficiency, requiring more development to harvest satisfactorily uranium from seawater. Amidoxime-based fibrous adsorbents are the most promising adsorbents of seawater uranium due to abundant chelating sites. However, they suffer from severe shrinkage and stiffness once they dry, losing porous architecture and mechanical properties. Herein, an economical and scalable two-nozzle electrospinning technology was applied to produce poly amidoxime nanofibers (PAO NFs) supported by Poly acrylonitrile nanofibers (PAN NFs) as composite PAO/PAN nanofibrous mats with high structure stability. These PAO/PAN mats, with rapid wettability and excellent mechanical strength, show promising uranium adsorption capacities of 369.8 mg/g at seawater pH level, much higher than PAO and PAN NFs. The uranium adsorption capacity of the PAO/PAN mat reached 5.16 mg/g after 7 days of circulating (10 ppm uranium) spiked natural seawater. Importantly, the composite mat maintained its fibrous structure after five adsorption-desorption cycles with more than 80 % of its adsorption capacity, confirming its recyclability and stability. Therefore, the composite PAO/PAN mat fulfills the basic requirements for effectively and economically trapping uranium from seawater, which could be a matrix for further development.

Abstract:A novel combined technology involving electrospinning, and hydrothermal tactics was developed to fabricate polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylic acid (PVA/PAA) superhydrophilic nanofibers supported on montmorillonite (MMT) or zeolite. A series of structural characterizations and activity measurements demonstrate that the montmorillonite or zeolite support can significantly decrease the mean nanofiber diameter, resulting in more abundant active sites toward the adsorption of uranium. The maximum monolayer sorption capacity for MMT/PVA/PAA and zeolite/PVA/PAA nanofibers reached as high as 170.53 and 205.75 mg/g, respectively. Five adsorption and desorption cycle experiments demonstrated that the synthetic materials possessed good renewable performance.
Sunlight Polymerization of Poly(amidoxime) Hydrogel Membrane for Enhanced Uranium Extraction from Seawater

Abstract:The uranium level in seawater is ≈1000 times as high as terrestrial ores and can provide potential near-infinite fuel for the nuclear energy industry. However, it is still a significant challenge to develop high-efficiency and low-cost adsorbents for massively extracting uranium from seawater. Herein, a simple and fast method through low-energy consumption sunlight polymerization to direct fabrication of a poly(amidoxime) (PAO) hydrogel membrane, which exhibits high uranium adsorption capacity, is reported. This PAO hydrogel owns semi-interpenetrating structure and a hydrophilic poly(acrylamide) 3D network of hydrogel which can disperse and fix PAOs well. As a result, the amidoxime groups of PAOs exhibit an outstanding uranium adsorption efficiency (718 ± 16.6 and 1279 ± 14.5 mg g-1 of m uranium/m PAO in 8 and 32 ppm uranium-spiked seawater, respectively) among reported hydrogel-based adsorbents. Most importantly, U-uptake capacity of this hydrogel can achieve 4.87 ± 0.38 mg g-1 of m uranium/m dry gel just after four weeks within natural seawater. Furthermore, this hydrogel can be massively produced through low-energy consumption and environmentally-friendly sunlight polymerization. This work will provide a high-efficiency and low-cost adsorbent for massive uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:Efficient capture uranium from seawater/wastewater is important to not only supply raw material for nuclear energy but also avert the environmental threat from uranium-containing solutions. It is of great significance to design highly efficient adsorbents with stability and recyclability. Herein, the acid-tolerant nanofibrous adsorbent was synthesized by a combination of chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) co-electrospinning, crosslink treatment, acrylonitrile grafting and amidoximation. The resultant CS/PVA-AO nanofibers exhibited the maximum uranium adsorption capacity of 714 mg g−1, larger than that of CS based sorbents. The CS/PVA-AO nanofibers demonstrated reliable stability in acid conditions as well as in adsorption–desorption cycling. The model fitting investigation showed that the uranium adsorbed on CS/PVA-AO nanofibers by the Langmuir adsorption model with the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. This research provides a more efficient and convenient option for uranium recovery from seawater/wastewater.

Abstract:There are approximately 4 billion tons of uranium in the ocean, which is unmatched by the surface. Nevertheless, it's very challenging to extract uranium from the ocean due to the exceedingly low concentration of uranium in the ocean (about 3.3 μg L-1) as well as high salinity level. Current methods are often limited by selectivity, sustainability, economics, etc. Herein, phosphoric acid group and amidoxime group were grafted to skin collagen fibers through " initiated access" to design a new uranium extraction material, abbreviated as CGPA. Through laboratory simulation experiments, it is concluded that the maximum adsorption capacity of CGPA for uranium reaches 263.86 mg g-1. It has high adsorption, selectivity, and reusability for uranium. In the actual seawater extraction experiment, CGPA obtained 29.64 μg of uranium after extracting 10.0 L of seawater, and the extraction rate was 90.1%. The adsorbent has excellent effects in kinetics, selectivity, extraction capacity, renewability, etc. In the extraction of uranium from seawater, and is an economically feasible and industrially expandable adsorbent.

Abstract:Large-scale and rapid extraction of uranium from seawater is promising for overcoming the challenge of supply interruption to achieve sustainable nuclear energy production. However, existing uranium adsorbents are limited by bacterial contamination or low seawater flux for long-term operation. Inspired by the efficient nutrient absorption by animal small intestine folds, we have developed a continuous 3D intestine-fold-like hierarchical porous uranium adsorbent using a one-step cryo-polymerization technique. It shows 10 times higher uranium adsorption capacity than the same material without the intestine-fold-like structure. The continuous supermacro pores (10 ~ 100 μm) in the adsorbent provide rapid flow channels for seawater; the micropores (~ 1 μm) in the pore walls provide Schiff base and amidoxime sites for efficient uranium capture. Its functional and high-strength double network polymer chains shows a compressive strength of 1.4 ~ 3.3 MPa. Within a period of seven days in natural seawater, the uranium adsorption rate was as high as 0.97 mg/ (g·day). The presence of antibacterial Schiff base allows the adsorbent to achieve a uranium adsorption amount of 10.45 ± 0.46 mg/g after 30 days in natural seawater. Importantly, the cryo-polymerization technique proposed in this work simultaneously achieves the formation of hierarchical pores and is easily scalable for large-area preparation, providing a reliable adsorbent for seawater uranium extraction and contributing to the sustainable development of nuclear energy.

Abstract:Extracting uranium from seawater, which contains hundreds of times more than terrestrial ores, furnishes a sustainable energy resource while curbing carbon emissions. Nanofibrous-based amidoxime is the most reliable uranium adsorbent due to its abundant chelating sites and large surface area. However, the amidoximation (AO) of polyacrylonitrile nanofiber (PAN NFs) produces brittle and shrunk AO-PAN NFs, and the spinning of pre-amidoximed PAN produces sub-micro stiff poly amidoxime (PAO) NFs, restricting their applicability. Herein, pre-cyclization (210 °C) and optimized amidoximation are applied to construct a hydrogel shell layer from PAO on cyclized electrospun PAN NFs. Among different amidoximation ratios, AO10-CPAN mats (10 g/L) with a thin hydrogel PAO shell layer exhibit excellent mechanical strength, high uranium adsorption capacity reached 380 mg/g at pH 8, and maintained their structure and 89 % of their initial adsorption capacity after six adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, a 20.6 mg/g uranium adsorption capacity is reached after 15 days of circulating spiked (300 ppb uranium) natural seawater through the AO10-CPAN mats, proving their excellent selectivity and the open-chain amidoxime is the main compound of PAO shell. The surface amidoximed cyclized PAN (AO10-CPAN) mats satisfy the mechanical and physiochemical requirements for effectively extracting uranium from seawater.

Abstract:The oceans contain hundreds of times more uranium than terrestrial ores. Fiber-based adsorption is considered to be the most promising method to realize the industrialization of uranium extraction from seawater. In this work, a pre-amidoximation with a blow spinning strategy is developed for mass production of poly(imide dioxime) nanofiber (PIDO NF) adsorbents with many chelating sites, excellent hydrophilicity, 3D porous architecture, and good mechanical properties. The structural evidences from C-13 NMR spectra confirm that the main functional group responsible for the uranyl binding is not "amidoxime" but cyclic "imidedioxime." The uranium adsorption capacity of the PIDO NF adsorbent reaches 951 mg-U per g-Ads in uranium (8 ppm) spiked natural seawater. An average adsorption capacity of 8.7 mg-U per g-Ads is obtained after 56 d of exposure in natural seawater via a flow-through column system. Moreover, up to 98.5% of the adsorbed uranium can be rapidly eluted out and the adsorbent can be regenerated and reused for over eight cycles of adsorption-desorption. This new blow spun PIDO nanofabric shows great potential as a new generation adsorbent for uranium extraction from seawater.
Ultrafast strategy to self-assemble polyamidoxime PVA nanofibers with solar-induced synergy for enhancing uranium extraction from seawater

Abstract:Application of amidoxime (AO) based fibrous adsorbents in uranium extraction from seawater (UES) is hampered in their adsorption performance and preparation process, including two items: firstly, low grafting kinetics of monomer acrylonitrile (AN) and large amount of its homopolymers, secondly, low extraction efficiency limiting by the ultralow concentration of uranium and temperature of seawater. Herein, an ultrafast strategy to prepare AO based nanofibers (NFs) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) super hydrophilic slit nanopore structure via radiation crosslinking and grafting polymerization ( c -PVA- g -PAO NFs) was designed. Combined with hydrophilic 2D MXene nanosheets for excellent photothermal and photoelectric synergistic assistance, further improved the adsorption performance of the material ( c -PVA- g -PAO&MXene NFs). Super hydrophilic PVA NFs with water-resistant three-dimensional network structure generated by radiation crosslinking realized ultrafast graft polymerization of AN. Within 1 min AN can be grafted throughout the c -PVA NFs in its aqueous solution with degree of grafting (DG) 73.71%, and construct a well-developed slit nanopore structure inside and outside of the fiber. Through ultrasound, MXene can be effectively loaded on the surface of the nanofiber, and further enhance 30.16% of the adsorption capacity of the material under light with MXene content 8 wt%. The c -PVA- g -PAO&MXene NFs achieved adsorption capacity of uranium with 2.23 mg/g in natural seawater for 1 week, which increased 26.70% than in dark (1.76 mg/g). And it could undergo at least 5 cycles of adsorption and elution. This novel strategy with ultrafast grafting, facile operating process and solar-induced synergy provided a new ideal to promote the industrialization process of UES.

Abstract:Direct collection of uranium from low uranium systems via adsorption remains challenging. Fibrous sorbent materials with amidoxime (AO) groups are promising adsorbents for uranium extraction from seawater. However, low AO adsorption group utilization remains an issue. We herein fabricated a branched structure containing AO groups on polypropylene/polyethylene spun-laced nonwoven (PP/PE SNW) fibers using grafting polymerization induced by radiation (RIGP) to improve AO utilization. The chemical structures, thermal properties, and surface morphologies of the raw and treated PP/PE SNW fibers were studied. The results show that an adsorptive functional layer with a branching structure was successfully anchored to the fiber surface. The adsorption properties were investigated using batch adsorption experiments in simulated seawater with an initial uranium concentration of 500 μg·L −1 (pH 4, 25 °C). The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent material was 137.3 mg·g −1 within 24 h; moreover, the uranyl removal reached 96% within 240 min. The adsorbent had an AO utilization rate of 1/3.5 and was stable over a pH range of 4–10, with good selectivity and reusability, demonstrating its potential for seawater uranium extraction.

Abstract:Herein, we have successfully fabricated hierarchically porous polyamidoxime nanofibers (PAO-PNF) for capturing uranium from seawater via the combinations of electrospinning and non-solvent induced phase separation. The hierarchical structures of PAO-PNF greatly enhanced specific surface areas and hydrophilicity, which greatly reduces the mass transfer resistance inside the fibers and increases adsorption sites. In addition, the hierarchical structures could achieve more sufficient amidoximation reactions, resulting in higher grafting densities of amidoxime groups. The hierarchical structures can effectively improve the adsorption capacity, which is increased by 78.9% compared with non-porous PAO nanofibers. In addition, the PAO-PNF can regenerate and reuse more than six adsorption-desorption cycles, which have great potential in the fields of uranium extraction.

Abstract:Uranium as a nuclear fuel, its source and aftertreatment has been a hot topic of debate for developers. In this paper, amidoxime and guanidino-modified cotton fibers (DC-AO-PHMG) were synthesized by the two-step functionalization approach, which exhibited remarkable antimicrobial and high uranium recovery property. Adsorption tests revealed that DC-AO-PHMG had excellent selectivity and anti-interference properties, the maximum adsorption capacity of 609.75 mg/g. More than 85 % adsorption capacity could still be kept after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, and it conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model as a spontaneous heat-absorbing chemical monolayer process. FT-IR, EDS and XPS analyses speculated that the amidoxime and amino synergistically increased the uranium uptake. The inhibitory activities of DC-AO-PHMG against three aquatic bacteria, BEY , BEL (from Yellow River water and lake bottom silt, respectively) and B. subtilis were significantly stronger, and the uranium adsorption was not impacted by the high bacteria content. Most importantly, DC-AO-PHMG removed up to 94 % of uranium in simulated seawater and extracted up to 4.65 mg/g of uranium from Salt Lake water, which demonstrated its great potential in the field of uranium resource recovery.

Abstract:The amidoxime-modified ultrathin polyethylene fibrous membrane (called as AFM) is prepared by a two-step graft polymerization method. The nano-sized particle structures are constructed on the AFM adsorbents sur-face after grafting. The adsorption behaviors of AFM adsorbent are studied by laboratory scale adsorption ex-periments. The adsorption results show that the adsorption of uranium by AFM is an endothermic spontaneous behavior without additional driving force. The AFM absorbent shows high specific surface area, good mechanical property and outstanding reusability of >12 cycles. Furthermore, the AFM adsorbent has a high uranium adsorption capacity of 147.38 mg/g in 8 ppm U-spiked simulated seawater for 96 h and 7.46 mg/g in natural seawater for 56 days. The results show that the degree of grafting (DG) and thickness of the membrane are the two key factors affecting the adsorption capacity. The adsorbent with thinner membrane thickness has a higher adsorption capacity at a moderate DG. This is because at moderate DG, the thinner the membrane is, the easier the adsorption sites are contacted by uranium ions. This work presents a novel membrane adsorbent with high uranium adsorption capacity and long service life, which shows significant application potential for uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:Amidoxime-functionalized hydrogels are one of most promising adsorbents for high-efficiency uranium (U) extraction from seawater, but bioadhesion on their surface seriously decreases their adsorption efficiency and largely shortens their service life. Herein, a semi-interpenetrating zwitterion–poly(amidoxime) (ZW-PAO) hydrogel was explored through introducing a PAO polymer into a poly [3-(dimethyl 4-vinylbenzyl amino) propyl sulfonate] (PDVBAP) polyzwitterionic (PZW) network via ultraviolet (UV) polymerization. Owing to the anti-polyelectrolyte effect of the PZW network, this ZW-PAO hydrogel can provide excellent super-hydrophilicity in seawater for high-efficiency U-adsorption from seawater. Furthermore, the ZW-PAO hydrogel had outstanding anti-biofouling performance for both highly enhanced U-adsorption and a relatively long working life in natural seawater. As a result, during only 25 days in seawater (without filtering bacteria), the U-uptake amount of this ZW-PAO hydrogel can reach 9.38 mg/g and its average rate can reach 0.375 mg/(g∙day), which is excellent among reported adsorbents. This work has explored a promising hydrogel for high-efficiency U-recovery from natural seawater and will inspire new strategy for U-adsorbing materials.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) nanofibers (NFs) prepared by electrospinning technology were used as matrix material and then functionalized with the amidoxime (AO) group for uranium extraction from seawater (UES). During the modification process, acrylonitrile (AN) and cografted AN and acrylic acid (AA) were used as monomers to obtain EVOH-grafted poly AN (EVOH-g-PAN) NF and EVOH-cografted poly AN and poly AA (EVOH-g-PAN-PAA) NF mats with one-step chemically initiated graft polymerization (CIGP). Then, a series of NFs were modified into AO functional EVOH-g-PAO NFs and EVOH-g-PAO-PAA NFs by amidoximation and used for uranyl ion adsorption from their aqueous solution. The chemical structure, micromorphology, specific surface area, mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, etc., of NF mats before and after modification were investigated. Results showed that electrospinning and CIGP technology can successfully construct a highly controllable polyacrylonitrile (PAN) morphology on EVOH NFs. The use of electrospinning and CIGP in preparing EVOH NFs addressed challenges in UES materials, such as the AN grafting site, synthesis efficiency, mechanical strength of the adsorption material, and AO group utilization. Experiments showed that when adsorbed in 8 ppm uranium solution for 24 h, its adsorption capacity can reach up to 226.5 mg/g. Adsorption isotherm studies demonstrated a capacity of 704.2 mg/g, surpassing that of the majority of AO functional polymeric adsorbents. This study provides a new matrix material and synthesis method for the preparation of adsorbents for uranium extraction from seawater.

Supramolecularly Poly(amidoxime)-Loaded Macroporous Resin for Fast Uranium Recovery from Seawater and Uranium-Containing Wastewater

Abstract:Uranium is an extremely abundant resource in seawater that could supply nuclear fuel for over the long-term, but it is tremendously difficult to extract. Here, a new supramolecular poly(amidoxime) (PAO)-loaded macroporous resin (PLMR) adsorbent has been explored for highly efficient uranium adsorption. Through simply immersing the macroporous resin in the PAO solution, PAOs can be firmly loaded on the surface of the nanopores mainly by hydrophobic interaction, to achieve the as-prepared PLMR. Unlike existing amidoxime-based adsorbents containing many inner minimally effective PAOs, almost all the PAOs of PLMR have high uranium adsorption efficiency because they can form a PAO-layer on the nanopores with molecular-level thickness and ultrahigh specific surface area. As a result, this PLMR has highly efficient uranium adsorbing performance. The uranium adsorption capacity of the PLMR was 157 mg/g (the UPAO in the PLMR was 1039 mg/g), in 32 ppm uranium-spiked seawater for 120 h. Additionally, uranium in 1.0 L 100 ppb U-spiked both water and seawater can be removed quickly and the recovery efficiency can reach 91.1 ± 1.7% and 86.5 ± 1.9%, respectively, after being filtered by a column filled with 200 mg PLMR at 300 mL/min for 24 h. More importantly, after filtering 200 T natural seawater with 200 g PLMR for only 10 days, the uranium-uptake amount of the PLMR reached 2.14 ± 0.21 mg/g, and its average uranium adsorption speed reached 0.214 mg/(g·day) which is very fast among reported amidoxime-based adsorbents. This new adsorbent has great potential to quickly and massively recover uranium from seawater and uranium-containing wastewater. Most importantly, this work will provide a simple but general strategy to greatly enhance the uranium adsorption efficiency of amidoxime-functionalized adsorbents with ultrahigh specific surface area via supramolecular interaction, and even inspire the exploration of other adsorbents.

Abstract:Uranium extraction from seawater is urgent but challenging part of nuclear energy development and environmental protection. Herein, we develop amidoxime-functionalized konjac glucomannan (AO-KGM) sponges as the efficient adsorbents, through chemical cross-linking of amidoxime groups in the natural biomass. In this paper, for the C 1 s signal of complex polysaccharide-modified materials, we adopt a new XPS calculation method to obtain the carbon peak position after grafting, proving the occurrence of the grafting reaction of the material. Correspondingly, AO-KGM sponges show a relatively stable uranium extraction capability in a complex environment containing uranium. Mechanism studies indicate that the adsorption of uranium by AO-KGM sponges is mainly a chemical process, which can be proved by X-ray adsorption spectroscopy analysis and adsorption kinetic fitting. Besides, electrostatic potential calculations also prove that amidoximes functional groups on the AO-KGM sponges can increase selectivity to uranium in the multi-metal ions system. Benefiting from the low cost of KGM sponges, AO-KGM sponges display broad application prospects in economical extraction of uranium from seawater. This work provides a meaningful paradigm for the rational design of advanced biomass-based adsorbents with surface functional modification for uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:Effective uranium extraction from seawater can contribute greatly for meeting the needs of low carbon energy. Extensive studies have been conducted on polyamidoxime-based (PAO-based) adsorbents for their exceptional uranium adsorption capabilities. However, the salt-shrinkage effect severely hinders the extraction of uranium from seawater using traditional PAO-based adsorbents. This study synthesizes a novel semi-interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel, designated as PAO/PMPC-SH, using a free-radical polymerization approach utilizing PAO and zwitterionic poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC). The incorporation of the PMPC component endows the adsorbent with exceptional resistance to salt shrinkage owing to the antipolyelectrolyte effect. This characteristic facilitates the diffusion of uranyl ions within PAO/PMPC-SH, even in a high-salt environment with a salt concentration as high as 25 wt%, thereby exposing the uranium binding sites in the adsorbent. Moreover, PAO/PMPC-SH exhibits exceptional antibacterial activity. After 28 days of test in natural seawater, PAO/PMPC-SH demonstrates a high uranium extraction capacity of 6.26 mg g −1 , representing only a 9.14 % decrease compared with the capacity of adsorbing in marine microorganism-removed natural seawater. Overall, the notable performance of PAO/PMPC-SH in uranium extraction highlights its potential as a highly effective adsorbent for uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:Polyamidoxime (PAO)‐based fibers are recognized as one of the most promising adsorbents for industrial‐scale extraction of uranium from seawater. The spinning of PAO is usually processed in environmentally unfriendly organic solvents, which cause serious environmental and cost concerns in industrial‐scale manufacturing. In this work, an aqueous solution blow spinning (ASBS) strategy is developed for large‐scale fabrication of seawater‐stable polyamidoxime/alginate nanofibers (PAO/Alg NFs) from water‐soluble PAO precursor solution. The as‐spun PAO/Alg NFs are ready to be used for uranium adsorption after simple immersion in calcium chloride solution for crosslinking. The 3D porous architecture, flexibility, and strength of nanofibers are well maintained as the inevitable shrinkage and degeneration accompanied by traditional "alkaline‐heat activation" post treatment are completely avoided. A high adsorption capacity of 892.77 and 8.42 mg‐U g−1 NFs is achieved in uranium spiked seawater and 8 tons of nonspiked natural seawater, respectively. Taking advantage of the simplicity, low cost, and industrially scalable features, this novel ASBS approach shows great potential for industrial‐scale production of PAO‐based nanofiber adsorbent with high capacity and good mechanical strength for uranium recovery from natural seawater and industrial wastewater.
