Abstract:A new rapid algorithm for hologram of three-dimensional object was presented.The algorithm can rapidly generate the point hologram and the main hologram data of different depth according to the center symmetric distribution of dot hologram.The main holographic data of other depth were achieved by zooming in/out the main holographic data of the main depth.The point holographic data were generated by shifting the main holographic of the same depth.The analysis and experimental results show that the new algorithm can effectively shorten the computing time and its speed is nearly five times faster than other algorithms.

Abstract:Holography has garnered an explosion of interest in tremendous applications, owing to its capability of storing amplitude and phase of light and reconstructing the full-wave information of targets. Spatial light modulators, metalenses, metasurfaces, and other devices have been explored to achieve holographic images. However, the required phase distributions for conventional holograms are generally calculated using the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm, and the iteration is time-consuming without Fourier transform or other acceleration techniques. Few studies on designing holograms using artificial intelligence methods have been conducted. In this Letter, a three-dimensional (3D)-printed hologram for terahertz (THz) imaging based on a diffractive neural network (DNN) is proposed. Target imaging letters "THZ" with uniform field amplitude are assigned to a predefined imaging surface. Quantified phase profiles are primarily obtained by training the DNN with the target image and input field pattern. The entire training process takes only 60 s. Consequently, the hologram, that is, a two-dimensional array of dielectric posts with variational heights that store phase information, is fabricated using a 3D printer. The full-wave simulation and experimental results demonstrate the capability of the proposed hologram to achieve high-quality imaging in the THz regime. The proposed lens and design strategy may open new possibilities in display, optical-data storage, and optical encryption.

Abstract:In this paper. a method is proposed to implement noises reduced three-dimensional (3D) holographic near-eye display by phase-only computer-generated hologram (CGH). The CGH is calculated from a double-convergence light Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, in which the phases of two virtual convergence lights are introduced into GS algorithm simultaneously. The first phase of convergence light is a replacement of random phase as the iterative initial value and the second phase of convergence light will modulate the phase distribution calculated by GS algorithm. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The results indicate that this method can effectively reduce the noises in the reconstruction. Field of view (FOV) of the reconstructed image reaches 40 degrees and experimental light path in the 4-f system is shortened. As for 3D experiments, the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can present 3D images with 180cm zooming range and continuous depth cues. Abstract:The use of a deep neural network is a promising technique for rapid hologram generation, where a suitable training dataset is vital for the reconstruct quality as well as the generalization of the model. In this Letter, we propose a deep neural network for phase hologram generation with a physics-informed training strategy based on Fourier basis functions, leading to orthonormal representations of the spatial signals. The spatial frequency characteristics of the reconstructed diffraction fields can be regulated by recombining the Fourier basis functions in the frequency domain. Numerical and optical results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively improve the generalization of the model with high-quality reconstructions.

Abstract:Learning-based computer-generated holography (CGH) provides a rapid hologram generation approach for holographic displays. Supervised training requires a large-scale dataset with target images and corresponding holograms. We propose an autoencoder-based neural network (holoencoder) for phase-only hologram generation. Physical diffraction propagation was incorporated into the autoencoder’s decoding part. The holoencoder can automatically learn the latent encodings of phase-only holograms in an unsupervised manner. The proposed holoencoder was able to generate high-fidelity 4K resolution holograms in 0.15 s. The reconstruction results validate the good generalizability of the holoencoder, and the experiments show fewer speckles in the reconstructed image compared with the existing CGH algorithms.
End-to-end learning of 3D phase-only holograms for holographic display

Abstract:Computer-generated holography (CGH) provides volumetric control of coherent wavefront and is fundamental to applications such as volumetric 3D displays, lithography, neural photostimulation, and optical/acoustic trapping. Recently, deep learning-based methods emerged as promising computational paradigms for CGH synthesis that overcome the quality-runtime tradeoff in conventional simulation/optimization-based methods. Yet, the quality of the predicted hologram is intrinsically bounded by the dataset's quality. Here we introduce a new hologram dataset, MIT-CGH-4K-V2, that uses a layered depth image as a data-efficient volumetric 3D input and a two-stage supervised+unsupervised training protocol for direct synthesis of high-quality 3D phase-only holograms. The proposed system also corrects vision aberration, allowing customization for end-users. We experimentally show photorealistic 3D holographic projections and discuss relevant spatial light modulator calibration procedures. Our method runs in real-time on a consumer GPU and 5 FPS on an iPhone 13 Pro, promising drastically enhanced performance for the applications above.

Abstract:Neural-network-based reconstruction of digital holograms can improve the speed and the quality of micro- and macro-object images, as well as reduce the noise and suppress the twin image and the zero-order. Usually, such methods aim to reconstruct the 2D object image or amplitude and phase distribution. In this paper, we investigated the feasibility of using a generative adversarial neural network to reconstruct 3D-scenes consisting of a set of cross-sections. The method was tested on computer-generated and optically-registered digital inline holograms. It enabled the reconstruction of all layers of a scene from each hologram. The reconstruction quality is improved 1.8 times when compared to the U-Net architecture on the normalized standard deviation value.

Abstract:Deep learning is an emerging technique for computer hologram generation, and the training dataset is critical for the quality of the learning-based hologram. In this study, we propose a phase hologram generation method based on a deep neural network (DNN) trained with Fourier basis functions. As the training dataset is generated by recombining the Fourier basis functions, its statistical frequency characteristics can be directly manipulated to improve the performance of DNN. With this physics informed training strategy, the external generalization of the model, as well as the image quality of the holographic reconstructions, can be improved. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for achieving high-quality optical reconstructions.
Towards real-time photorealistic 3D holography with deep neural networks

Abstract:The ability to present three-dimensional (3D) scenes with continuous depth sensation has a profound impact on virtual and augmented reality, human–computer interaction, education and training. Computer-generated holography (CGH) enables high-spatio-angular-resolution 3D projection via numerical simulation of diffraction and interference<a href="/articles/s41586-020-03152-0#ref-CR1">1</a>. Yet, existing physically based methods fail to produce holograms with both per-pixel focal control and accurate occlusion<a href="/articles/s41586-020-03152-0#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-03152-0#ref-CR3">3</a>. The computationally taxing Fresnel diffraction simulation further places an explicit trade-off between image quality and runtime, making dynamic holography impractical<a href="/articles/s41586-020-03152-0#ref-CR4">4</a>. Here we demonstrate a deep-learning-based CGH pipeline capable of synthesizing a photorealistic colour 3D hologram from a single RGB-depth image in real time. Our convolutional neural network (CNN) is extremely memory efficient (below 620 kilobytes) and runs at 60 hertz for a resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels on a single consumer-grade graphics processing unit. Leveraging low-power on-device artificial intelligence acceleration chips, our CNN also runs interactively on mobile (iPhone 11 Pro at 1.1 hertz) and edge (Google Edge TPU at 2.0 hertz) devices, promising real-time performance in future-generation virtual and augmented-reality mobile headsets. We enable this pipeline by introducing a large-scale CGH dataset (MIT-CGH-4K) with 4,000 pairs of RGB-depth images and corresponding 3D holograms. Our CNN is trained with differentiable wave-based loss functions<a href="/articles/s41586-020-03152-0#ref-CR5">5</a> and physically approximates Fresnel diffraction. With an anti-aliasing phase-only encoding method, we experimentally demonstrate speckle-free, natural-looking, high-resolution 3D holograms. Abstract:Digital holographic imaging is able to reconstruct phase and three-dimensional (3D) information of an object from a one-shot two-dimensional (2D) lensless hologram. A dense encoder–decoder network, called Dense-U-net, is proposed to realize the reconstruction of a 3D particle field. The radii and 3D coordinates of the particles are encoded into a 2D grayscale image as the ground truth. The 2D hologram was served as the input of the network. A Dense_Block is designed and added to the encoder and decoder of the traditional U-net model. Each layer takes the inputs from all previous layers and passes its own feature map to all subsequent layers. Thus, as the diffraction is distributed throughout the entire hologram, both the features with high signal-to-noise ratio at the center of the particle and the diffraction features with low signal-to-noise ratio around the particle can be learned, thereby facilitating the full characterization of the particles. Using the specially designed dense connection module, network training can be accomplished with fewer parameters and faster speeds.
Holo-U2Net for High-Fidelity 3D Hologram Generation

Abstract:Traditional methods of hologram generation, such as point-, polygon-, and layer-based physical simulation approaches, suffer from substantial computational overhead and generate low-fidelity holograms. Deep learning-based computer-generated holography demonstrates effective performance in terms of speed and hologram fidelity. There is potential to enhance the network's capacity for fitting and modeling in the context of computer-generated holography utilizing deep learning methods. Specifically, the ability of the proposed network to simulate Fresnel diffraction based on the provided hologram dataset requires further improvement to meet expectations for high-fidelity holograms. We propose a neural architecture called Holo-U2Net to address the challenge of generating a high-fidelity hologram within an acceptable time frame. Holo-U2Net shows notable performance in hologram evaluation metrics, including an average structural similarity of 0.9988, an average peak signal-to-noise ratio of 46.75 dB, an enhanced correlation coefficient of 0.9996, and a learned perceptual image patch similarity of 0.0008 on the MIT-CGH-4K large-scale hologram dataset.

Abstract:Holography is a crucial technique for the ultimate three-dimensional (3D) display, because it renders all optical cues from the human visual system. However, the shortage of 3D contents strictly restricts the extensive application of holographic 3D displays. In this paper, a 2D-to-3D-display system by deep learning-based monocular depth estimation is proposed. By feeding a single RGB image of a 3D scene into our designed DGE-CNN network, a corresponding display-oriented 3D depth map can be accurately generated for layer-based computer-generated holography. With simple parameter adjustment, our system can adapt the distance range of holographic display according to specific requirements. The high-quality and flexible holographic 3D display can be achieved based on a single RGB image without 3D rendering devices, permitting potential human-display interactive applications such as remote education, navigation, and medical treatment.

Abstract:This work introduces the forward–backward‐diffraction framework for computing multi‐depth diffraction fields and the layer‐by‐layer replacement method for handling occlusion relationships. When combined with a fully convolutional neural network, it generates multi‐depth holograms with excellent depth focusing and corrects occlusion relationships. The reconstructed scene exhibits minimal speckle noise and few edge artifacts. Efficiently generating 3D holograms is one of the most challenging research topics in the field of holography. This work introduces a method for generating multi‐depth phase‐only holograms using a fully convolutional neural network (FCN). The method primarily involves a forward–backward‐diffraction framework to compute multi‐depth diffraction fields, along with a layer‐by‐layer replacement method (L2RM) to handle occlusion relationships. The diffraction fields computed by the former are fed into the carefully designed FCN, which leverages its powerful non‐linear fitting capability to generate multi‐depth holograms of 3D scenes. The latter can smooth the boundaries of different layers in scene reconstruction by complementing information of occluded objects, thus enhancing the reconstruction quality of holograms. The proposed method can generate a multi‐depth 3D hologram with a PSNR of 31.8 dB in just 90 ms for a resolution of 2160 × 3840 on the NVIDIA Tesla A100 40G tensor core GPU. Additionally, numerical and experimental results indicate that the generated holograms accurately reconstruct clear 3D scenes with correct occlusion relationships and provide excellent depth focusing.

Abstract:In computer-generated holography, leveraging deep learning for holographic display with continuous depth poses challenges in balancing depth cues and runtime. Sufficient data are typically not available for existing deep neural networks based on point-based datasets. To address this, we propose an unsupervised learning neural network named Polygon-based Holo, based on an efficient diffraction model that enables calculations from a reference plane to tilted plane to generate the target field wavefront. Polygon-based Holo is trained using the proposed diffraction model through an unsupervised process, employing mid-holograms superimposed with a small number of tilted planes. Polygon-based Holo can accurately predict wavefronts from input RGB-D images with continuous depth, displaying exceptional generalization across applications. The numerical simulations and optical experiments validate our approach, emphasizing its feasibility and potential for facilitating arbitrary depth control and dynamic display of holography.

Abstract:Addressing the challenge of acquiring holograms from real-world scenes, this study introduces a novel approach leveraging light field cameras to capture light field data, which is subsequently transformed into authentic scene holograms. This methodology integrates light field imaging technology with a pre-trained deep neural network. To compensate for the limitations inherent in camera hardware, a super-resolution algorithm is employed. The conversion of light field information into RGB-D data facilitates its input into the deep neural network, enabling the inference of corresponding real-world scene holograms. Empirical evidence demonstrates that the system is capable of inferring high-resolution (1920 x 1080) real-world scene holograms within a timeframe of 5 s, utilizing hardware comprising an NVIDIA RTX 3060.

Abstract:Abstract Learning-based computer-generated hologram (CGH) demonstrates great potential for real-time high-quality holographic displays. However, real-time 4K CGH generation for 3D scenes remains a challenge due to the computational burden. Here, a variant conventional neural network (CNN) is presented for CGH encoding with learned layered initial phases for layered CGH generation. Specifically, the CNN predicts the CGH based on the input complex amplitude on the CGH plane, and the learned initial phases act as a universal phase for any target images at the target depth layer. These phases are generated during the training process of the coding CNN to further optimize the quality. The CNN is trained to learn encoding 3D CGH by randomly selecting the depth layer in the training process, and contains only 938 parameters. The generation time for a 2D 4K CGH is 18 ms, and is increased by 12 ms for each layer in a layered 3D scene. The average Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) of each layer is above 30dB in the depth range from 160 to 210 mm. Experiments verify that our method can achieve real-time layered 4K CGH generation.

Abstract:This study presents a novel approach for generating holograms based on the neural radiance fields (NeRF) technique. Generating three-dimensional (3D) data is difficult in hologram computation. NeRF is a state-of-the-art technique for 3D light-field reconstruction from 2D images based on volume rendering. The NeRF can rapidly predict new-view images that do not include a training dataset. In this study, we constructed a rendering pipeline directly from a 3D light field generated from 2D images by NeRF for hologram generation using deep neural networks within a reasonable time. The pipeline comprises three main components: the NeRF, a depth predictor, and a hologram generator, all constructed using deep neural networks. The pipeline does not include any physical calculations. The predicted holograms of a 3D scene viewed from any direction were computed using the proposed pipeline. The simulation and experimental results are presented.

OAH-Net: A Deep Neural Network for Hologram Reconstruction of Off-axis Digital Holographic Microscope

Abstract:Off-axis digital holographic microscopy is a high-throughput, label-free imaging technology that provides three-dimensional, high-resolution information about samples, particularly useful in large-scale cellular imaging. However, the hologram reconstruction process poses a significant bottleneck for timely data analysis. To address this challenge, we propose a novel reconstruction approach that integrates deep learning with the physical principles of off-axis holography. We initialized part of the network weights based on the physical principle and then fine-tuned them via weakly supersized learning. Our off-axis hologram network (OAH-Net) retrieves phase and amplitude images with errors that fall within the measurement error range attributable to hardware, and its reconstruction speed significantly surpasses the microscope's acquisition rate. Crucially, OAH-Net demonstrates remarkable external generalization capabilities on unseen samples with distinct patterns and can be seamlessly integrated with other models for downstream tasks to achieve end-to-end real-time hologram analysis. This capability further expands off-axis holography's applications in both biological and medical studies.

Abstract:Learning-based computer-generated holography (CGH) algorithms appear as novel alternatives to generate phase-only holograms. However, most existing learning-based approaches underperform their iterative peers regarding display quality. Here, we recognize that current convolutional neural networks have difficulty learning cross-domain tasks due to the limited receptive field. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose a Fourier-inspired neural module, which can be easily integrated into various CGH frameworks and significantly enhance the quality of reconstructed images. By explicitly leveraging Fourier transforms within the neural network architecture, the mesoscopic information within the phase-only hologram can be more handily extracted. Both simulation and experiment were performed to showcase its capability. By incorporating it into U-Net and HoloNet, the peak signal-to-noise ratio of reconstructed images is measured at 29.16 dB and 33.50 dB during the simulation, which is 4.97 dB and 1.52 dB higher than those by the baseline U-Net and HoloNet, respectively. Similar trends are observed in the experimental results. We also experimentally demonstrated that U-Net and HoloNet with the proposed module can generate a monochromatic 1080p hologram in 0.015 s and 0.020 s, respectively.
