Abstract:Comprehensive industrial pollutant treatment strategies have attracted much attention due to widespread pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, and dyes. In this study, we present a facile method to fabricate gradient porous membranes from eco-friendly cellulose biomass and poly(ionic liquid) (PIL), incorporating uniformly embedded carbene-stabilized silver nanoparticles, for effective detection, enrichment, and catalytic degradation of pollutants. By controlling cellulose modification, the pore size and distribution can be regulated. The membrane exhibits curvature upon detection of organic vapors, serving as a VOC sensor and enabling prompt pollution source visual identification. Utilizing silver oxide (Ag2O) as both a silver source and a base, we achieved Ag-NHC (Ag-N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes and Ag nanoparticles uniformly distributed throughout the membrane. The size of these Ag nanoparticles can be conveniently controlled by adjusting the ratios of Ag2O and PIL. These porous membranes demonstrate versatility and robust catalytic degradation activity with representative toxic wastes and dyes. Their recyclability and catalytic efficacy underscore their potential for sustainable pollution management, emphasizing the importance of integrated toolboxes for comprehensive pollutant detection and treatment.
