Abstract:The k-delivery Travelling Salesman Problem (k-dTSP) is one of the most interesting variants of vehicle routing. Given a weighted graph, on which each node either holds an item or requires an item, and a vehicle of capacity of k which can carry at most k items at a time, one is asked to schedule a shortest route for the vehicle so that it starts from a depot and transports all items from the points holding them to the points requiring items, and returns home under the vehicle capacity constraint. It is clearly an NP-hard problem. Among quite a few results the best-known approximation algorithm is due to Charikar, Menuier and Raghavachari (2001). All the previous approaches first construct an approximate TSP tour. It is then expanded to a (much) larger but bounded one by repeatedly moving the vehicle on the tour, so that the pickup/delivery tasks can be completed. It motivates us to consider a simpler approach, that directly applies an optimal algorithm on a circle graph after we derive an approximate TSP tour. It is known that k-dTSP on a path graph is polynomially solvable, while the complexity is open on a circle graph. In this paper, we settle this issue by presenting a polynomial algorithm on a circle, and then apply it to k-dTSP on general graphs. Although the theoretical bound is yet unclear, experiments show that it outperforms the existing approaches.

Abstract:The Traveling Salesman Problem (often called TSP) is a classic algorithmic problem in the field of computer science and operations research. It is an NP-Hard problem focused on optimization. TSP has several applications even in its purest formulation, such as planning, logistics, and the manufacture of microchips; and can be slightly modified to appear as a sub-problem in many areas, such as DNA sequencing. In this paper, a study on parallelization of the Brute Force approach (under several paradigms) of the Travelling Salesman Problem is presented. Detailed timing studies for the serial and various parallel implementations of the Travelling Salesman Problem have also been illustrated.

Abstract:The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is a classic combinatorial optimization problem that seeks to find the shortest possible route that visits a set of given cities exactly once and returns to the starting city. Despite its simple formulation, the TSP is known to be NP-hard, making it computationally challenging to find an optimal solution, particularly for large problem instances. geometric approaches to solving the TSP, leveraging insights from computational geometry and convex optimization. We begin by formulating the TSP as a graph optimization problem, where cities are represented as nodes and edges represent possible routes between cities. We then investigate geometric algorithms and techniques for efficiently computing approximate solutions to the TSP, aiming to find routes that are close to optimal in terms of length.

Abstract:In the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), a list of cities and the distances between them are given. The goal is to find the shortest possible route that visits each city exactly once and returns to the original city. The TSP has a wide range of applications in many different industries including, but not limited to, optimizing mail and shipping routes, guiding industrial machines, mapping genomes, and improving autonomous vehicles. For centuries, traveling salesmen, politicians, and circuit preachers have tackled their own versions of the problem. Within the last century, the TSP has become one of the most important problems in the fields of mathematics and computer science. The time to find an exact solution is often impractically long, which has led to the development of numerous approximation techniques, ranging from linear programming methods to nature-inspired models. Here, we present a novel N-body approach to the TSP.

Abstract:A fundamental variant of the classical traveling salesman problem (TSP) is the so-called multiple TSP (mTSP), where a set of $m$ salesmen jointly visit all cities from a set of $n$ cities. The mTSP models many important real-life applications, in particular for vehicle routing problems. An extensive survey by Bektas (Omega 34(3), 2006) lists a variety of heuristic and exact solution procedures for the mTSP, which quickly solve particular problem instances. In this work we consider a further generalization of mTSP, the many-visits mTSP, where each city $v$ has a request $r(v)$ of how many times it should be visited by the salesmen. This problem opens up new real-life applications such as aircraft sequencing, while at the same time it poses several computational challenges. We provide multiple efficient approximation algorithms for important variants of the many-visits mTSP, which are guaranteed to quickly compute high-quality solutions for all problem instances.

Abstract:The Traveling Salesman Problem is one of the best studied NP-hard problems in combinatorial optimization. Powerful methods have been developed over the last 60 years to find optimum solutions to large TSP instances. The largest TSP instance so far that has been solved optimally has 85,900 vertices. Its solution required more than 136 years of total CPU time using the branch-and-cut based Concorde TSP code [1]. In this paper we present graph theoretic results that allow to prove that some edges of a TSP instance cannot occur in any optimum TSP tour. Based on these results we propose a combinatorial algorithm to identify such edges. The runtime of the main part of our algorithm is $O(n^2 \log n)$ for an n-vertex TSP instance. By combining our approach with the Concorde TSP solver we are able to solve a large TSPLIB instance more than 11 times faster than Concorde alone.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the Recoverable Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Here the task is to find two tours simultaneously, such that the intersection between the tours is at least a given minimum size, while the sum of travel distances with respect to two different distance metrics is minimized. Building upon the classic double-tree method, we derive a 4-approximation algorithm for the RecoverableTSP. We also show that if the required size of the intersection between the tours is constant, a 2-approximation guarantee can be achieved, even if more than two tours need to be constructed. We discuss consequences for approximability results in the more general area of recoverable robust optimization.

Abstract:The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) in the two-dimensional Euclidean plane is among the oldest and most famous NP-hard optimization problems. In breakthrough works, Arora [J. ACM 1998] and Mitchell [SICOMP 1999] gave the first polynomial time approximation schemes. The running time of their approximation schemes was improved by Rao and Smith [STOC 1998] to $(1/\varepsilon)^{O(1/\varepsilon)} n \log n$. Bartal and Gottlieb [FOCS 2013] gave an approximation scheme of running time $2^{(1/\varepsilon)^{O(1)}} n$, which is optimal in $n$. Recently, Kisfaludi-Bak, Nederlof, and Węgrzycki [FOCS 2021] gave a $2^{O(1/\varepsilon)} n \log n$ time approximation scheme, achieving the optimal running time in $\varepsilon$ under the Gap-ETH conjecture. In our work, we give a $2^{O(1/\varepsilon)} n$ time approximation scheme, achieving the optimal running time both in $n$ and in $\varepsilon$ under the Gap-ETH conjecture.

Abstract:In the maximum traveling salesman problem (Max TSP) we are given a complete undirected graph with nonnegative weights on the edges and we wish to compute a traveling salesman tour of maximum weight. We present a fast combinatorial $\frac 45$ - approximation algorithm for Max TSP. The previous best approximation for this problem was $\frac 79$. The new algorithm is based on a novel technique of eliminating difficult subgraphs via half-edges, a new method of edge coloring and a technique of exchanging edges. A half-edge of edge $e=(u,v)$ is informally speaking "a half of $e$ containing either $u$ or $v$".

Abstract:The Clustered Traveling Salesman Problem (CTSP) is a variant of the popular Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) arising from a number of real-life applications. In this work, we explore a transformation approach that solves the CTSP by converting it to the well-studied TSP. For this purpose, we first investigate a technique to convert a CTSP instance to a TSP and then apply powerful TSP solvers (including exact and heuristic solvers) to solve the resulting TSP instance. We want to answer the following questions: How do state-of-the-art TSP solvers perform on clustered instances converted from the CTSP? Do state-of-the-art TSP solvers compete well with the best performing methods specifically designed for the CTSP? For this purpose, we present intensive computational experiments on various benchmark instances to draw conclusions.

Abstract:Traveling salesman problem is a NP-hard problem. Until now, researchers have not found a polynomial time algorithm for traveling salesman problem. Among the existing algorithms, dynamic programming algorithm can solve the problem in time O(n^2*2^n) where n is the number of nodes in the graph. The branch-and-cut algorithm has been applied to solve the problem with a large number of nodes. However, branch-and-cut algorithm also has an exponential worst-case running time. In this paper, a new exact algorithm for traveling salesman problem is proposed. The algorithm can be used to solve an arbitrary instance of traveling salesman problem in real life and the time complexity interval of the algorithm is (O(n^4), O(n^3*2^n)). It means that for some instances, the algorithm can find the optimal solution in polynomial time although the algorithm also has an exponential worst-case running time. In other words, the algorithm tells us that not all the instances of traveling salesman problem need exponential time to compute the optimal solution. The algorithm of this paper can not only assist us to solve traveling salesman problem better, but also can assist us to deepen the comprehension of the relationship between NP-complete and P. Therefore, it is considerable in the further research on traveling salesman problem and NP-hard problem.

A Multilevel Reduction Algorithm to TSP

Abstract:The TSP (traveling salesman problem) is one of the typical NP-hard problems in combinatorial optimization problem. The fast and effective approximate algorithms are needed to solve the large-scale problem in reasonable computing time. The known approximate algorithm can not give a good enough tour for the larger instance in reasonable time. So an algorithm called multilevel reduction algorithm is proposed, which is based on the analysis of the relation of local optimal tour and global optimal tour of the TSP. The partial tour of the global optimal tour is obtained by a very high probability through simply intersecting the local optimal tours. Using these partial tours it could contract the searching space of the original problem, at the same time it did not cut the searching capability down, this is the so-called reduction theory. And then the scale of the instance could be reduced small enough by multi-reduction. Finally it could solve the small-scaled instance using the known best algorithm and get a good enough tour by putting the partial tours together. The experimental results on TSPLIB (traveling salesman problem library) show that the algorithm could almost get optimal tour every time for instance in reasonable time and thus outperformed the known best ones in the quality of solutions and the running time.

Abstract:The Traveling Salesman Problem is one of the most studied problems in computational complexity and its approximability has been a long standing open question. Currently, the best known inapproximability threshold known is 220/219 due to Papadimitriou and Vempala. Here, using an essentially different construction and also relying on the work of Berman and Karpinski on bounded occurrence CSPs, we give an alternative and simpler inapproximability proof which improves the bound to 185/184.

Abstract:With applications to many disciplines, the traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a classical computer science optimization problem with applications to industrial engineering, theoretical computer science, bioinformatics, and several other disciplines. In recent years, there have been a plethora of novel approaches for approximate solutions ranging from simplistic greedy to cooperative distributed algorithms derived from artificial intelligence. In this paper, we perform an evaluation and analysis of cornerstone algorithms for the Euclidean TSP. We evaluate greedy, 2-opt, and genetic algorithms. We use several datasets as input for the algorithms including a small dataset, a mediumsized dataset representing cities in the United States, and a synthetic dataset consisting of 200 cities to test algorithm scalability. We discover that the greedy and 2-opt algorithms efficiently calculate solutions for smaller datasets. Genetic algorithm has the best performance for optimality for medium to large datasets, but generally have longer runtime. Our implementations is public available.

Abstract:In the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), a salesman wants to visit a set of cities and return home. There is a cost of traveling from city i to city j , which is the same in either direction for the Symmetric TSP. The objective is to visit each city exactly once, minimizing total travel costs. In the Graphical TSP, a city may be visited more than once, which may be necessary on a sparse graph. We present a new integer programming formulation for the Graphical TSP requiring only two classes of polynomial-sized constraints while addressing an open question proposed by Denis Naddef. We generalize one of these classes, and present promising preliminary computational results.

Abstract:The Travelling Salesman Problem is one the most fundamental and most studied problems in approximation algorithms. For more than 30 years, the best algorithm known for general metrics has been Christofides's algorithm with approximation factor of 3/2, even though the so-called Held-Karp LP relaxation of the problem is conjectured to have the integrality gap of only 4/3. Very recently, significant progress has been made for the important special case of graphic metrics, first by Oveis Gharan et al., and then by Momke and Svensson. In this paper, we provide an improved analysis for the approach introduced by Momke and Svensson yielding a bound of 13/9 on the approximation factor, as well as a bound of 19/12+epsilon for any epsilon>0 for a more general Travelling Salesman Path Problem in graphic metrics.

Abstract:We study the Travelling Salesperson (TSP) and the Steiner Tree problem (STP) in graphs of low highway dimension. This graph parameter was introduced by Abraham et al. [SODA 2010] as a model for transportation networks, on which TSP and STP naturally occur for various applications in logistics. It was previously shown [Feldmann et al. ICALP 2015] that these problems admit a quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme (QPTAS) on graphs of constant highway dimension. We demonstrate that a significant improvement is possible in the special case when the highway dimension is 1, for which we present a fully-polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS). We also prove that STP is weakly NP-hard for these restricted graphs. For TSP we show NP-hardness for graphs of highway dimension 6, which answers an open problem posed in [Feldmann et al. ICALP 2015].

Abstract:AbstractThe Prize-Collecting Traveling Salesman Problem is a class of generalizations of the classic Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) where it is not necessary to visit all the vertices. Given the edge costs and a certain profit associated with each vertex, the goal is to find a route which satisfies maximum collected profit and minimum traveling costs constraints. We show polynomial-time approximation algorithms for two variants of the problem and establish conditions under which the presented algorithms are asymptotically optimal on random inputs.

Abstract:We show that the traveling salesman problem (TSP) and its many variants may be modeled as functional optimization problems over a graph. In this formulation, all vertices and arcs of the graph are functionals; i.e., a mapping from a space of measurable functions to the field of real numbers. Many variants of the TSP, such as those with neighborhoods, with forbidden neighborhoods, with time-windows and with profits, can all be framed under this construct. In sharp contrast to their discrete-optimization counterparts, the modeling constructs presented in this paper represent a fundamentally new domain of analysis and computation for TSPs and their variants. Beyond its apparent mathematical unification of a class of problems in graph theory, the main advantage of the new approach is that it facilitates the modeling of certain application-specific problems in their home space of measurable functions. Consequently, certain elements of economic system theory such as dynamical models and continuous-time cost/profit functionals can be directly incorporated in the new optimization problem formulation. Furthermore, subtour elimination constraints, prevalent in discrete optimization formulations, are naturally enforced through continuity requirements. The price for the new modeling framework is nonsmooth functionals. Although a number of theoretical issues remain open in the proposed mathematical framework, we demonstrate the computational viability of the new modeling constructs over a sample set of problems to illustrate the rapid production of end-to-end TSP solutions to extensively-constrained practical problems.
