Abstract:In this paper, we first prove the strong Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem for subharmonic functions with the irrational shift on the Torus. Then, we apply it to the analytic quasi-periodic Jacobi cocycles and show that for suitable frequency and coupling number, if the Lyapunov exponent of these cocycles is positive at one point, then it is positive on an interval centered at this point and Hölder continuous in \begin{document}$ E $\end{document} on this interval. What's more, if the coupling number of the potential is large, then the Lyapunov exponent is always positive for all irrational frequencies and Hölder continuous in \begin{document}$ E $\end{document} for all finite Liouville frequencies. For the Schrödinger cocycles, a special case of the Jacobi ones, its Lyapunov exponent is also Hölder continuous in the frequency and the lengths of the intervals where the Hölder condition of the Lyapunov exponent holds only depend on the coupling number.

Abstract:It is known that the Lyapunov exponent is not continuous at certain points in the space of continuous quasi-periodic cocycles. We show that the Lyapunov exponent is continuous for a higher-dimensional analytic category in this paper. It has a modulus of continuity of the form exp(−∣logt∣ σ ) for some 0 < σ < 1.

Abstract:We find sufficient conditions for the singularity of a substitution $\mathbb{Z}$-action's spectrum, which generalize the conditions given in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.11287" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.11287">arXiv:2003.11287</a>, Theorem 2.4, and we also obtain a similar statement for a collection of substitution $\mathbb{R}$-actions, including the self-similar one. To achieve this, we first study the distribution of related toral endomorphism orbits. In particular, given a toral endomorphism and a vector $\mathbf{v}\in\mathbb{Q}^d$, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the orbit of $\omega\mathbf{v}$ to be uniformly distributed modulo $1$ for almost every $\omega\in\mathbb{R}$. We use our results to find new examples of singular substitution $\mathbb{Z}$- and $\mathbb{R}$-actions.

Abstract:We prove that for a torus homeomorphism isotopic to the identity and with a lift whose rotation set is an interval, either every rational point in the rotation set is realized by a periodic orbit, or there exists an annular, essential, periodic set. In the latter case we give a qualitative description of the dynamics.

Abstract:We show the existence of large $\mathcal C^1$ open sets of area preserving endomorphisms of the two-torus which have no dominated splitting and are non-uniformly hyperbolic, meaning that Lebesgue almost every point has a positive and a negative Lyapunov exponent. The integrated Lyapunov exponents vary continuously with the dynamics in the $\mathcal C^1$ topology and can be taken as far away from zero as desired. Explicit real analytic examples are obtained by deforming linear endomorphisms, including expanding ones. The technique works in nearly every homotopy class and the examples are stably ergodic (in fact Bernoulli), provided that the linear map has no eigenvalue of modulus one.

Abstract:For a topological dynamical system $(X, T)$ we define a uniform generator as a finite measurable partition such that the symmetric cylinder sets in the generated process shrink in diameter uniformly to zero. The problem of existence and optimal cardinality of uniform generators has lead us to new challenges in the theory of symbolic extensions. At the beginning we show that uniform generators can be identified with so-called symbolic extensions with an embedding, i.e., symbolic extensions admitting an equivariant measurable selector from preimages. From here we focus on such extensions and we strive to characterize the collection of the corresponding extension entropy functions on invariant measures. For aperiodic zero-dimensional systems we show that this collection coincides with that of extension entropy functions in arbitrary symbolic extensions, which, by the general theory of symbolic extensions, is known to coincide with the collection of all affine superenvelopes of the entropy structure of the system. In particular, we recover, after [Bu16], that an aperiodic zero-dimensional system is asymptotically h- expansive if and only if it admits an isomorphic symbolic extension. Next we pass to systems with periodic points, and we introduce the notion of a period tail structure, which captures the local growth rate of periodic orbits. Finally, we succeed in precisely identifying the wanted collection of extension entropy functions in symbolic extensions with an embedding: these are all the affine superenvelopes of the usual entropy structure which lie above certain threshold function determined by the period tail structure. This characterization allows us, among other things, to give estimates (and in examples to compute precisely) the optimal cardinality of a uniform generator.

Abstract:We present a dichotomy for surface homeomorphisms in the isotopy class of the identity. We show that, in the absence of a degenerate fixed point set, either there exists a uniform bound on the diameter of orbits of non-wandering points for the lifted dynamics in the universal covering space, or the map has non-contractible periodic orbits. We then use this new tool to characterize the dynamics of area preserving homeomorphisms of the torus without non-contractible periodic orbits, showing that if the fixed point set is non-degenerate, then either the lifted dynamics is uniformly bounded, or it has a single strong irrational dynamical direction.

Proportions of Incommensurate, Resonant, and Chaotic Orbits for Torus Maps

Abstract:This paper focuses on distinguishing classes of dynamical behavior for one- and two-dimensional torus maps, in particular between orbits that are incommensurate, resonant, periodic, or chaotic. We first consider Arnold's circle map, for which there is a universal power law for the fraction of nonresonant orbits as a function of the amplitude of the nonlinearity. Our methods give a more precise calculation of the coefficients for this power law. For two-dimensional torus maps, we show that there is no such universal law for any of the classes of orbits. However, we find different categories of maps with qualitatively similar behavior. Our results are obtained using three fast and high precision numerical methods: weighted Birkhoff averages, Farey trees, and resonance orders.

Quantitative equidistribution of eigenfunctions for toral Schrödinger operators

Abstract:We prove a quantum ergodicity theorem in position space for the eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator $-\Delta+V$ on a rectangular torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ for $V\in L^2(\mathbb{T}^2)$ with an algebraic rate of convergence in terms of the eigenvalue. A key application of our theorem is a quantitative equidistribution theorem for the eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator whose potential models disordered systems with $N$ obstacles. We prove the validity of this equidistribution theorem in the limit, as $N\to\infty$, under the assumption that a weak overlap hypothesis is satisfied by the potentials modeling the obstacles, and we note that, when rescaling to a large torus (such that the density remains finite, as $N\to\infty$) this corresponds to a size decaying regime, as the coupling parameter in front of the potential will decay, as $N\to\infty$. We apply our result to Schrödinger operators modeling disordered systems on large tori $\mathbb{T}^2_L$ by scaling back to the fixed torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. In the case of random Schrödinger operators, such as random displacement models, we deduce an almost sure equidistribution theorem on certain length scales which depend on the coupling parameter, the density of the potentials and the eigenvalue. In particular, if these parameters converge to finite, nonzero values, we are able to determine at which length scale (as a function of these parameters) equidistribution breaks down. In this sense, we provide a lower bound for the Anderson localization length as a function of energy, coupling parameter and the density of scatterers.

Abstract:In this article we mainly aim to know what kind of asymptotic behavior of typical orbits can display. For example, we show in any transitive system, the emprical measures of a typical orbit can cover all emprical measures of dense orbits and can intersect some physical-like measures. In particular, if the union set of emprical measures of all dense orbits is not singleton, then the typical orbit will display historic behavior simultaneously for typical continuous functions and the limit set of ergodic average along every continuous function equals to a closed interval composed by the union of limit sets of ergodic average on all dense orbits. Moreover, if the union set of emprical measures of all dense orbits contains all ergodic measures, the above interval equals to the rotation set. These results are not only suitable for systems with specification-like properties or minimal systems, but also suitable for many other systems including all general (not assumed uniformly hyperbolic) nontrivial homoclinic classes and Bowen eyes. Moreover, we introduce a new property called m-g-product property weaker than classical specification property and minimal property and nontrivial examples are constructed.

Abstract:We study the uniform ergodicity property for non-invertible topological and measure-preserving dynamical systems. It is shown that for topological dynamical systems uniform ergodicity is equivalent to eventually periodicity and that for measure preserving systems it is equivalent to periodicity. To obtain our results, we prove a result on the long-term behavior of lattice homomorphisms that have $1$ isolated in its spectrum.

Abstract:We give several quantum dynamical analogs of the classical Kronecker-Weyl theorem, which says that the trajectory of free motion on the torus along almost every direction tends to equidistribute. As a quantum analog, we study the quantum walk $\exp(-i t \Delta) \psi$ starting from a localized initial state $\psi$. Then the flow will be ergodic if this evolved state becomes equidistributed as time goes on. We prove that this is indeed the case for evolutions on the flat torus, provided we start from a point mass, and we prove discrete analogs of this result for crystal lattices. On some periodic graphs, the mass spreads out non-uniformly, on others it stays localized. Finally, we give examples of quantum evolutions on the sphere which do not equidistribute.

Abstract:We establish a conditional limit theorem for occupation times of infinite ergodic transformations under a tied-down condition, that is, the condition that the orbit returns to a reference set with finite measure at the final observation time. The class of limit distributions is the generalization of the uniform distribution which was discovered by M. Barlow, J. Pitman and M. Yor in [Séminaire de Probabilités XXIII. Lecture Notes in Mathematics, volume 1372 (1989), 294--314]. For the proof we utilize operator renewal theory. Our result can be applied to intermittent maps with two or more indifferent fixed points.

Abstract:In this paper we consider torus homeomorphisms $f$ homotopic to Dehn twists. We prove that if the vertical rotation set of $f$ is reduced to zero, then there exists a compact connected essential "horizontal" set K, invariant under $f$. In other words, if we consider the lift $\hat{f}$ of $f$ to the cylinder, which has zero vertical rotation number, then all points have uniformly bounded motion under iterates of $\hat{f}$. Also, we give a simple explicit condition which, when satisfied, implies that the vertical rotation set contains an interval and thus also implies positive topological entropy. As a corollary of the above results, we prove a version of Boyland's conjecture to this setting: If $f$ is area preserving and has a lift $\hat{f}$ to the cylinder with zero Lebesgue measure vertical rotation number, then either the orbits of all points are uniformly bounded under $\hat{f}$, or there are points in the cylinder with positive vertical velocity and others with negative vertical velocity.

Abstract:We study the fluctuations of ergodic sums using global and local specifications on periodic points. We obtain Lindeberg-type central limit theorems in both situations. As an application, when the system possesses a unique measure of maximal entropy, we show weak convergence of ergodic sums to a mixture of normal distributions. Our results suggest decomposing the variances of ergodic sums according to global and local sources.
