Abstract:Accelerated industrialization and frequent marine petroleum spills have led to the generation of oily wastewater, which poses a significant threat to the environment. There is an urgent need to develop technologies for treating oily water. Conventional methods for oil-water treatment are often inefficient and costly. In contrast, the emerging superwettable membrane separation technology is highly efficient, consumes less energy, and is easy to operate. This paper reviews the research, application, and performance of different types of superwettable membrane materials in the field of oil-water separation technology. Specifically, research has focused on wettable under-air membranes, wettable under-liquid membranes, and intelligent response membranes with switchable wettability under specific conditions. This paper analyses the technological advantages and problems of these different types of superwettable membranes during the separation process. For example, it examines the separation efficiency of high viscosity oils and the performance of membrane materials in treating emulsified oils and tiny oil droplets. This article discusses the oil separation efficiency and durability of membrane materials. This paper also summarises the problems and challenges in this field and proposes future development directions and application prospects for superwettable membrane materials. The proposed directions include improving the fouling resistance and separation efficiency of membranes, simplifying the preparation process and materials, developing substitutes for fluorine-containing materials, and recycling waste for membrane preparation.
