Abstract:Moderate and intense low-oxygen dilution oxy-coal combustion (MILD-OCC) is a promising next-generation oxycoal combustion technology for CO2 capture in power plants and industrial furnaces, while its ignition and combustion characteristics are obviously different from those in conventional oxy-coal combustion. The experiments of the ignition behavior of Datong bituminous coal particles were conducted on a Hencken burner flat flame combustion facility under O2/CO2 and O2/N2 environments of Tg=1473-1873 K and XO2=5 %-27 %, and the high-temperature and low-oxygen conditions of 1873 K, 5 %O2 and 10 %O2 were specifically designed to mimic MILD-OCC conditions. The time-resolved image sequences of CH* chemiluminescence and char thermal radiation of single burning coal particle were acquired jointly by a high-speed intensified CMOS camera combined with different band-pass spectral filters to identify volatiles homogeneous ignition and char heterogeneous ignition, respectively. Then the ignition modes of single coal particle under different O2/CO2 and O2/N2 environments were quantitatively determined by analyzing the chronological sequence of these two emission signals. The results showed that the ignition modes of single coal particle transformed from hetero-homogeneous ignition (HI-GI) to homo-heterogeneous ignition (GI-HI) with the increase of Tg from 1473 K to 1873 K at 21 %O2 under both O2/N2 and O2/CO2 environments. And the ignition mode transformed into homogeneous ignition (GI) when XO2 decreased to 10 % and 5 % at 1873 K under O2/N2 environment, while the ignition mode under O2/CO2 environment remained as GI-HI mode. Moreover, the onset position of volatiles homogeneous ignition under O2/ CO2 environment lagged behind that under O2/N2 environment and it was more remarkable under low-oxygen conditions. Most importantly, the ignition modes of coal particle transferred from homogeneous ignition (GI) under O2/N2 environment to homo-heterogeneous ignition (GI-HI) under O2/CO2 environment with the MILDOCC conditions of 1873 K, 5 %O2 and 10 %O2. The results will give a deep insight into the ignition characteristics and modes of coal particle under MILD-OCC environments.
