Abstract:We report here a new method of making polyesterether from ethylene glycol. The reaction is catalysed by a ruthenium com-plex and liberates H2 gas and H2O as by-products. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction proceeds by the dehydrogenation of ethylene glycol to glycoaldehyde which can subsequently react with another ethylene glycol to make a hemiacetal intermediate. Hemiacetal intermediate can either dehydrogenate to make ester or dehydrate to make ether result-ing in the formation of polyesterether. Investigation into the polymerization of other diols has also been conducted that shows that diols with lower number of carbons between both the alcohol groups (propylene glycol, glycerol, and 1,3-propanediol) lead to the formation of polyesterether whereas α,ω-diols containing higher number of carbons (1,6-hexanediol, and 1,10-decanediol) lead to the formation of polyester.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to directly synthesize aliphatic polyester ethers from ethylene glycol through a ruthenium-catalyzed dehydration/dehydrogenation polymerization reaction. The main research contents of the paper are as follows: 1. **Synthesis of New Materials**: - A new method is proposed to synthesize aliphatic polyester ethers through the dehydration/dehydrogenation polymerization of ethylene glycol catalyzed by a ruthenium catalyst. 2. **Optimization of Catalytic Conditions**: - Different catalysts (Ru-1 to Ru-5) and reaction conditions (temperature, catalyst loading, solvent, time, etc.) were studied to achieve higher ethylene glycol conversion rates and product molecular weights. 3. **Mechanism Study**: - Preliminary studies indicate that the reaction proceeds through the dehydrogenation of ethylene glycol to form glycolaldehyde, which then reacts with another ethylene glycol molecule to form a hemiacetal intermediate. The hemiacetal intermediate can further dehydrogenate to form an ester or dehydrate to form an enol intermediate, which can tautomerize to form an aldehyde intermediate, thereby promoting chain growth. 4. **Study of Other Diols**: - Polymerization studies were conducted on other diols (such as propylene glycol, glycerol, 1,3-propanediol) and found that these diols can also form polyester ethers. For longer-chain diols (such as 1,6-hexanediol and 1,10-decanediol), polyesters rather than polyester ethers were mainly formed. 5. **Theoretical Calculations**: - Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were used to study the dehydrogenation process of ethylene glycol and propanol to form ester or ether bonds. It was found that for ethylene glycol, both dehydrogenation and dehydration pathways are feasible, while propanol mainly forms esters. 6. **Application Prospects**: - Since some diols (such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol) can be obtained from renewable resources, this method provides a useful route for the preparation of renewable polyester ethers. Through the above research, the paper addresses the issues of complex steps and difficulty in large-scale application in the traditional synthesis of aliphatic polyester ethers and proposes a simpler and more efficient synthesis method.
