Abstract:Anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were used to investigate the structural and bonding properties of WN 10 −/0 . The electron affinity of WN 10 is measured to be 1.582 ± 0.030 eV. The frequency of the NN stretch in WN 10 is measured to be 2170 ± 80 cm −1 , which is red-shifted with respect to that of the dinitrogen molecule indicating that the NN bonds are weakened in WN 10 . The theoretical adiabatic detachment energy (ADE) and vertical detachment energy (VDE) of WN 10 − obtained by calculations at the CCSD(T)/CBS level agree well with experimental results. The structures of WN 10 −/0 are C 4v symmetric pentacoordinated pyramidal structures with five end-on dinitrogen ligands. Our experiments show that the peak of WN 10 − is dominant in the mass spectrum of anionic WN n , whereas the mass peak of WN 12 + is dominant in the mass spectrum of cationic WN n , implying that the stabilities of WN n clusters are strongly related to their charge states.

Abstract:The predicted lower energy structures of neutral carbon cluster C-10 are presented by using the particle swarm optimization method in combination with quantum chemistry calculation. Our results describe a wonderful diversity of C-10 configuration with the DFT and MP2 methods. For linear and cyclic clusters, the energy of most stable monocyclic structure with D-5h symmetry is lower by 1.38 kcal/mol than the transition isomers with D-10h symmetry at CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level, which is consistent with the previous theoretical results by others. All linear structures of C-10 cluster have been certified as the metastable states at different calculation methods in this work. Simulated infrared spectra reveals that the extensive electron localization exists in the D-10h configuration leading to the decreasing of the number of vibration modes compared with D-5h, configuration. The nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations indicate that planar C-10 system is a stable aromatic compound and the position used to calculate the aromatic indices can be affected by the most shielding or deshielded location that we employed. The contribution of the delocalized electrons to the pi-aromaticity is identical in C1(a) and C1(b). By the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) and canonical molecular orbital (CMO) analysis, we know that the highly symmetric structures have more energy degenerate CMOs and 2 center-2 electron bond connection, and monocyclic C-10 cluster is a globally doubly (sigma- and pi-) aromatic compound. Topological analysis and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis show that there isn't any electrostatic type of interactions in C-10 structures, and much of negative natural valence electron configuration comes from high angular momentum orbitals. According to the electron configurations, the natural hybrid orbital is mainly composed of sp hybrid in the systems. It is worth mentioning that the competition of complicated many body effects plays a significant role in stabilizing the distorted configuration of C-10 cluster. Abstract:The state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) method and rotated multi-state complete active space second-order perturbation theory (RMS-CASPT2) are applied to investigate the low-lying Λ–S and Ω electronic states of tungsten nitride, WN. The potential energy curves of the low-lying states are computed, and the fitted spectroscopic constants are in good agreement with the available experimental results. The A 4 Π-X 4 Σ - transition is focused to compare with the previously observed emission spectra of WN in the region of 500–580 nm. With the inclusion of the spin–orbit coupling, the ground Λ–S state X 4 Σ - and the excited state A 4 Π split into 4 Σ − 1/2, 3/2 and 4 Π −1/2, 1/2, 3/2, 5/2 , respectively; and according to the present computed results, in conjunction with the results from previous studies, a complete set of transition data for the WN molecule is obtained. Our computed results indicate that the observed spectra should be assigned to the fine structure of A 4 Π-X 4 Σ - transition in WN. Furthermore, spectra information, including transition energy and transition dipole moment, arising from the transitions from the other excited states to ground states is also predicted. It is expected that the present work would promote the further experimental studies on absorption or emission spectra of WN.

Abstract:Pentagon-based two-dimensional (2D) materials have received tremendous attention owing to their unique atomic configurations, extraordinary physical and chemical properties, and their potential for broad applications. As one member of 2D penta-based materials, penta-CN2 has been proposed to be a high energy density material. Here, based on an in-depth thermodynamic and ab initio molecular dynamics analysis, we reveal that penta-CN2 has superior stability with an ultrahigh melting point up to 2500 K. Moreover, it remains an amorphous C-N network under the melting state, which makes penta-CN2 suitable for coating material in aviation area. Encouraged by the prospect of excellent applications, we further propose an experimental condition for synthesizing the penta-CN2. Specifically, the Nb(100) surface would be a potential substrate, the CH4 and N2H4 could be used as carbon and nitrogen sources under T = 1600 K with pressure p(H-2) = p(N2H4) = 4 x 10(-4) bar, p(CH4) = (10 & SIM; 100)p(H-2). Further calculation of electro-mechanical properties shows that penta-CN2 has intriguing properties, which includes large-range negative Poisson's ratio and paramagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic half-metal transition induced by hole doping. Our work is expected to give a profound view of penta-CN2 and guide the future experiment works.

Abstract:Two doubly charged transition metal complexes, Pt(CN)42- and Pt(CN)62- commonly found in the condensed phases, are produced as isolated species from solutions to the gas phase using electrospray ionization. Their stability and electronic structures are investigated by photodetachment photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The adiabatic electron detachment energies for the dianions to monoanions are measured to be 1.69 and 3.85eV for Pt(CN)42- and Pt(CN)62-, respectively. The magnitude of the repulsive Coulomb barrier is estimated to be ∼2.5eV for Pt(CN)42-, and ∼1.7eV for Pt(CN)62-. Well-resolved and distinct peaks are observed in the spectra, yielding rich electronic structure information for these complexes. DFT calculations including scalar relativistic and spin–orbit effects are carried out to determine the geometries and to interpret the observed spectral features. The calculations show that the frontier occupied molecular orbitals are largely metal-based for Pt(CN)42- and ligand-based for Pt(CN)62-, in contrast to the standard ligand field theory description.

Geometries And Electronic Structures Of Nitrogen-Doped Fullerene Fragment C10n2(I) And Its Ions

Abstract:The geometries and relative energies of the low-lying electronic states of C10N2(I), cation, and anion are investigated by the DFT/CCSD(T) method. Vibrational frequency calculation is performed to analyze the stability of optimized geometries of these states. The binding energy, ionization energy, electron affinity of C10N2(I) and the anion photoelectron spectra are estimated at the CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) level. The ground states of neutral C10N2(I), cation, and anion are the (1)A(1), B-4(2), and (2)A(2) states, respectively. The structure of C10N2(I) can be described as resulting from the fusion of 2 five-numbered rings and I six-numbered ring. Results demonstrate that the 2 five-numbered rings are more active than the six-numbered ring in C10N2(I) during electron excitation and the C(1) atom site within each N(11)-C(1)-C(5)-C(10) unit exhibits more inert than other atom sites during electron ionization and electron attachment. Abstract:WN6 phase discovered at 126-165 GPa after heating of W in nitrogen. XRD refinements reveal a unit cell in space group R (3) over barm which is consistent with the WN6 structure with armchairlike hexazine (N-6) rings, while strong A(1g) Raman mode confirms its N-N single bonds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal balanced contributions of attractive interactions between W and covalent N-6 rings, and repulsions between N-6 rings that make WN6 ultrastiff and tough. The WN6 phase displays long bond lengths in the nearest N-N and pressure-enhanced electronic band gap, which pave the way for finding novel nitrides.

Abstract:The geometry optimization and frequency analysis for the low-lying electronic states of C8N4 and its ions are performed at the DFT/6-31G(d) level. Their energies are calibrated at the CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) level of theory. Ionization energy, electron affinity, binding energy of C8N4, and anion photoelectron spectra of C8N4− are provided at the CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) level. Mulliken populations, leading configurations, bond orders, and compositions of molecular orbitals are used to examine the bonding characteristics in the low-lying electronic states of C8N4 and its ions. It is surprising to find that the ground state of C8N4 is the open shell 5A1 state. Interestingly for the low-lying electronic states of C8N4 and its ions, their structures significantly corrugated, which may be caused by their larger [N]/([N]+[C]) ratios. In addition, the similarities and differences between C8N4 and C10N2(II) are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:We carried out the computational studies on the geometric and electronic properties of electronic states of metastable C2N4 (m-C2N4) and corresponding ions using the CASSCF and DFT(B3LYP)/CCSD(T) techniques. The optimized geometries of electronic states, vibrational frequencies, Mulliken populations, bond orders, and average polarizabilities are computed at the DFT level while the relative energies of the electronic states, ionization energy, electron affinity, binding energy of m-C2N4 are calculated at the CCSD(T) level. The anion photoelectron spectra of m-C2N4− are also predicted. It is interesting to find that the relative energies of the electronic states of m-C2N4 cluster linearly correlate with the amount of charge transfer between N and C atoms and that, however, there is no charge transfer between C and N atoms upon electron ionization or electron attachment.

Abstract:Mass-selected photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy in conjunction with the density functional theory calculations was employed to investigate the geometrical and chemical bonding properties of NiC3−/0. Both the photoelectron spectrum and photoelectron angular distribution were measured from the spectra, yielding useful geometrical and electronic information about NiC3−/0. The complementary theoretical calculations suggest that the linear and fan-like structures were both populated experimentally in the cluster beam. Further comparative study on the synergistic donor–acceptor interactions in both isomers revealed the side-on coordination-induced bond weakening in the fan-like isomer as compared to the linear isomer. These findings will shed light on the structure-dependent reactivity of transition metal carbides.

Abstract:NBe5H n n-3 (n = 0-5) (0A-5A) species with a novel planar pentacoordinate nitrogen (ppN) were designed by the isoelectronic substitution of the C atom in planar pentacoordinate carbon (ppC) species CBe5H n n-4 (n = 0-5) with an N atom. The highly flexible H atoms found in ppC species CBe5H2 2- and CBe5H3 - were fixed upon the nitrogen substitution, as mirrored by the non-flexible H atoms in their ppN analogues NBe5H2 - (2A) and NBe5H3 (3A). Moreover, the N atom was found to fit the H-surrounded Be5 rings better than the C atom because the ppC species CBe5H4 and CBe5H5 + adopted non-planar structures due to size-mismatch between the C atom and the H-surrounded Be5 ring, but their ppN analogues NBe5H4 + (4A) and NBe5H5 2+ (5A) adopted perfect planar structures. The electronic structure analyses revealed that the N atoms in 0A-5A were involved in four doubly occupied orbitals, including three six-center two-electron (6c-2e) σ bonds and one 6c-2e π bond. Therefore, these ppN species not only obey the octet rule, but also possess the interesting σ and π double aromaticity, which contributes to the stabilization. Consequently, 2A, 4A, and 5A are charged kinetically viable global energy minima, and are suitable for the gas phase generation and spectroscopic characterization.

Mulliken populations, leading configurations, bond orders, and compositions of molecular orbitals are employed to explore the nature of bonding in the electronic states of C(10)N(2)(II) and its ions. Electron affinity, ionization energy, binding energy of C(10)N(2)(II), and anion photoelectron spectra of C(10)N(2)(II)(-) are also estimated at the CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) level. On the other hand, the similarities and differences between C(10)N(2)(I) and C(10)N(2)(II) are compared and discussed.
Electronic and Structural Evolution and Chemical Bonding in Ditungsten Oxide Clusters: W2on- and W2on (N=1-6)

Abstract:We report a systematic and comprehensive investigation of the electronic structures and chemical bonding in a series of ditungsten oxide clusters, W2On- and W2On (n = 1-6), using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Well-resolved photoelectron spectra were obtained at several photon energies (2.331, 3.496, 4.661, 6.424, and 7.866 eV), and W 5d-based spectral features were clearly observed and distinguished from O 2p-based features. More complicated spectral features were observed for the oxygen-deficient clusters because of the W 5d electrons. With increasing oxygen content in W2On-, the photoelectron spectra were observed to shift gradually to higher binding energies, accompanied by a decreasing number of W 5d-derived features. A behavior of sequential oxidation as a result of charge transfers from W to O was clearly observed. A large energy gap (2.8 eV) was observed in the spectrum of W2O6-, indicating the high electronic stability of the stoichiometric W2O6 molecule. Extensive DFT calculations were carried out to search for the most stable structures of both the anion and neutral clusters. Time-dependent DFT method was used to compute the vertical detachment energies and compare to the experimental data. Molecular orbitals were used to analyze the chemical bonding in the ditungsten oxide clusters and to elucidate their electronic and structural evolution.
Peculiar Bond Characters Of Fivefold Coordinated Octet Compound Crystals

Abstract:The present work exemplifies complementary perspectives offered by the band and bond pictures of solids, with an emphasis on the chemical intuition pertaining to the latter, especially in the presence of interfaces. The modern computational method of constructing a unique set of maximally localized Wannier functions from delocalized band states imparts new interpretations to the familiar concept of chemical bonds in the context of crystalline solids. By bridging the band and bond pictures using advanced computational tools, we reveal for the first time the unusual bond characters of a long-predicted fivefold coordinated structure of binary octet compounds A(N)B(8-N) consisting of AA ' stacked planar AB honeycombs. While the isolated monolayer retains the familiar p(z)-pi bonding in a honeycomb framework as in graphene and hexagonal boron nitride, the bulk foregoes in-plane pi bonding and embraces out-of-plane MIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISA-B-A-BMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS chain bonding via overlapping p(z) orbitals. Not only does the chemical intuition gained by invoking the bond picture clarify the chemical nature of the fivefold coordination, but it also facilely explains a salient discrepancy in theoretical predictions in otherwise sound ample experimental evidence in the form of epitaxial thin films, paving the way towards rational synthesis of such thin films for optoelectronic applications. On the other hand, we show that the conduction band minimum, important in determining the electrical and optical properties, is a distinctly extended state that can only be properly described within the band picture.
How to Accomplish a Square C(N) 4 Substructure of the Planar Tetracoordinate Carbon

Abstract:Nitrogen-based groups are usually not used as ligands to coordinate to the ptC atom. However, here we reported only nitrogen-based ligands to accomplish a theoretically successful square planar C(N)4 substructure. The first difficulty in accomplishing a square ptC(N)4 substructure is to conquer the tremendous strain from the planar to tetrahedral arrangements, and the second is to restrict it in a suitable system with the right symmetry. We designed several neutral molecules with the square ptC(N)4 substructures, and the molecules were studied using the density functional theory method at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) and TPSSh/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. The results of this work show that the molecules are all real minima on the potential energy surface and successfully achieved the square ptC(N)4 substructure in the theoretical method. The group orbitals among the square ptC(N)4 arrangement in the D2d symmetry have been discussed and used to investigate the bonding interactions among all atoms in the square ptC(N)4 substructure. Usually, the ptC systems have 18 valence electrons, but the present ptC systems mentioned in this work have 24 valence electrons, which is unusual for ptC.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The search for new binary tungsten nitrides, particularly those with a hP2-WC or hP4-NiAs structure, holds great promise for the attainment of mechanically excellent materials. However, due to the difficulties in forming those nitrides at ambient pressure, preparation of such a hexagonal WN compound has been rarely succeeded by conventional methods, leading to many ambiguities in its crystal structure, stabilities, and mechanical properties that have severely limited its practical applications. Here, we report the successful synthesis of a high-quality hexagonal WN through a high-pressure reaction route. Its crystal structure is definitively resolved to adopt the hP2 symmetry, rather than hP4, which is isotypic with that of WC. Combined with the calculations, the nitrogen deficiency is revealed to be intrinsic for stabilizing its crystal structure, which rationalizes its actual composition of WN0.764 with a nearly optimal electron filling of valence bands, similar to that of WC. Besides, this nitride is metallic and exhibits superior mechanical properties and thermal stabilities, rivaling or even exceeding those of WC, making it practical useful for the hard tool applications with sufficiently improved working efficiencies to replace carbides.

Abstract:Two new 3D frameworks [(WS4Cu6Br4)(timp)(8/3)(H2O)(40/3)](n) (1) and [(WS4Cu6Br4) (timtz)(8/3)(H2O)(40/3)](n) ( 2), containing heptanuclear cluster blocks (one W atom and six Cu atoms) bridged by trigonal ligands timp or timtz (timp 1-(3,5-di (1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)-1H-imidazole; timtz 2,4,6-tri(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine), were successfully synthesized. Both compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, XRD, IR, TGA. X-ray determination shows that 1 and 2 can be topologically represented as (3,4)-connected networks with alpha-C3N4 (or ctn) topology where [WS4Cu6] act as the 4-connecting nodes, and the timp or timtz ligands bridge in pairs that act as the three-connecting nodes. Both compounds have the high symmetry of space group I-43d, which is the maximum symmetry for this net topology. The luminescent spectra and N-2 absorption behaviors for 1 and 2 have also been investigated.

Abstract:The crystal structure of the title complex, [WO2(C9H6NO)(2)], a hexacoordinated molecule, has distorted octahedral geometry with C-2 site symmetry. There are two terminal O ligands with a short W-O bond length [1.722 (4) Angstrom] and a large O-W-O angle [106.6(3)degrees] in the molecule. The two terminal O ligands are in cis positions. The molecules join to form a two-dimensional network parallel to (001) through C-H ... O hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:We investigated the HCnS- (n = 4-11) clusters using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The partially resolved vibrational spectra of the HCnS- (n = 4-11) clusters are obtained. We found that the vertical detachment energies of the HCnS- (n = 4-11) clusters display an obvious parity effect with increasing number of carbon atoms: the vertical detachment energies of the even-numbered HCnS- are higher than their neighboring odd- numbered counterparts; the spectral features of the even-numbered HCnS- are much sharper than those of their odd-numbered counterparts. The ground-state structures of the anionic and neutral HCnS (n = 4-11) clusters are linear with the H and S atoms locating at two ends of the carbon chain. The electron affinities of the neutral HCnS- (n = 4-11) clusters are determined based on the transitions from the ground states of HCnS- anions to the electronic ground states of HCnS neutral species.
