Abstract:Big Data is defined as an emerging paradigm that includes complex and large-scale information beyond the processing capability of conventional tools. Traditional data analytics methods have been commonly used for many applications, such as text classfication, image recognition, and video tracking. For analysis purposes, these data often need to be represented as vectors. However, many other types of data objects in real-world applications contain rich feature vectors and structure information, such as chemical com pounds in bio-pharmacy, brain regions in brain networks and users in social networks. Unfortunately, vector representa tions are very simple features that do not inherently contain the object’s structure information. In reality, objectsmay have complicated characteristics depending on how the objects are assessed and characterized. Data may also reside in het erogeneous domains, such as traditional tabular-based data, sequential patterns, social networks, time series information, and semi-structured data. As a result, novel data analytics methods are needed to discover meaningful knowledge in advanced applications from objects with large-scale com plex characteristics. In total, there were 104 submissions to this IEEE ACCESS Special Section, with 39 accepted after rigorous peer review.

Abstract:With the rapid development of network infrastructures and personal electronic products, big data generated from the Internet, sensing networks, and other equipment are rapidly growing and have received increasing attention in recent years. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven big data processing technologies based on pattern recognition, machine learning, and deep learning have been intensively applied to dealing with large-scale heterogeneous data. However, challenges still exist in the development of AI-driven big data processing. In order to meet the existing challenges, it is important to consider how to analyze and process big data in a way that is more effective and reduces costs, how to discover and understand knowledge from the data, and how to generalize and transfer these discoveries into other application fields.

Abstract:The papers in this special section examines the deployment of Big Data and artificial intelligence for network technologies. The eneration of huge amounts of data, called big data, is creating the need for efficient tools to manage those data. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become the powerful tool in dealing with big data with recent breakthroughs at multiple fronts in machine learning, including deep learning. Meanwhile, information networks are becoming larger and more complicated, generating a huge amount of runtime statistics data such as traffic load, resource usages. Abstract:The pervasive nature of big data technologies as witnessed in industry services and everyday life has given rise to an emergent, data-focused economy stemming from many aspects of industrial applications. The richness and vastness of these services are creating unprecedented research opportunities in a number of industrial fields including public health, urban studies, economics, finance, social science, and geography. We are moving towards the era of Big Data Services, which are deployed in a multi-scale complex distributed architecture. Abstract:To react to the drastic developments in Big Data, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE CIS) has taken several measures, including setting up the First IEEE Symposium on Computational Intelligence in Big Data, which is going to be held within the SSCI 2014 in December 2014 in Florida, USA, and revising the name of the Technical Committee on Data Mining to expand its scope to cover Big Data Analytics. This special issue of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine is one in a series of reactions of the IEEE CIS to the boom in Big Data Analytics research that aims to publish selected research articles presenting most recent advances and discussing challenges and opportunities in the application of CI techniques to Big Data. After a peer-review procedure, two papers have been selected from 12 manuscripts submitted to the Special Issue to be present in this Special Issue, representing the highest quality work on CI techniques in understanding Big Data challenges. Both papers are briefly summarized. Both papers are of review nature discussing the opportunities and promises of CI techniques along with challenges. They have raised more questions than answers, which is actually the aim of this Special Issue to trigger a wider range of interests in the CI community.

Seen by many as a landmark moment for AI, the outcome did not come as a surprise, considering the excellent combination of 1920 CPUs with sophisticated AI algorithms, including neural networks and Monte Carlo tree search (Gibney, 2016; Silver et al ., 2016). Indeed, research on distributed computing and artificial intelligence (DCAI) has matured during the last decade and many effective applications are now deployed, performing an increasingly important role in modern computer science, including the two most hyped technologies: Internet of Things and Big Data. Abstract:Computing is a critical driving force in the development of human civilization. In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of intelligent computing, a new computing paradigm that is reshaping traditional computing and promoting digital revolution in the era of big data, artificial intelligence and internet-of-things with new computing theories, architectures, methods, systems, and applications. Intelligent computing has greatly broadened the scope of computing, extending it from traditional computing on data to increasingly diverse computing paradigms such as perceptual intelligence, cognitive intelligence, autonomous intelligence, and human-computer fusion intelligence. Intelligence and computing have undergone paths of different evolution and development for a long time but have become increasingly intertwined in recent years: intelligent computing is not only intelligence-oriented but also intelligence-driven. Such cross-fertilization has prompted the emergence and rapid advancement of intelligent computing. Intelligent computing is still in its infancy and an abundance of innovations in the theories, systems, and applications of intelligent computing are expected to occur soon. We present the first comprehensive survey of literature on intelligent computing, covering its theory fundamentals, the technological fusion of intelligence and computing, important applications, challenges, and future perspectives. Abstract:The articles in this special section focus on computational intelligence for big social data analytics. In the eras of social connectedness and social colonization, people are becoming increasingly enthusiastic about interacting, sharing, and collaborating through online collaborative media. In recent years, this collective intelligence has spread to many different areas, with particular focus on fields related to everyday life such as commerce, tourism, education, and health, causing the size of the Social Web to expand exponentially. The distillation of knowledge from such a large amount of unstructured information, however, is an extremely difficult task, as the contents of today's Web are perfectly suitable for human consumption, but remain hardly understandable to machines. Big social data analysis grows out of this need and combines multiple disciplines such as social network analysis, multimedia management, social media analytics, trend discovery, and opinion mining.
