Abstract:New architecture of a parallel robotic mechanism is studied in this paper. With respect to the disadvantages, technical deficiencies of current parallel mechanisms and the demands of industrial application, a new architecture of 3-DOF fully-parallel robotic mechanisms is proposed. It can be widely used in the fields of industrial robots, motion simulators, micromanipulators and parallel machine tools.

Abstract:A parallelogram allows the output link to remain at a fixed orientation with respect to an input link, for which it acts as a unique role in the design of parallel mechanisms. In this paper, the unique role of a parallelogram is used completely to design some new parallel mechanisms with two to six degrees of freedom (DoFs). In these mechanisms, some with three DoFs possess the advantage of very high rotational capability and some with two DoFs have the translational output of a rigid body. More than that, the design concept is also applied first to some parallel mechanisms to improve the systems' rotational capability. The parallel mechanisms proposed in this paper have wide applications in industrial robots, simulators, micromanipulators, parallel kinematics machines, and any other manipulation devices in which high rotational capability and stiffness are needed. Especially, the paper provides new concepts of the design of novel parallel mechanisms and the improvement of rotational capability for such systems.

Abstract:The structural synthesis of a group of parallel mechanisms can be established by an exhaustive enumeration of all feasible kinematic chains based on the screw theory. However, reliable kinematic limbs can provide mobility constraints for some unqualified supporting legs to guarantee the degrees-of-freedom feasibility of the parallel robots. A systematic design approach is presented for a family of planar single-loop parallel mechanisms with the consideration of infeasible kinematic chains. Different from the other design approaches for single-loop linkages, the fixed and moving platforms are predefined in this research to distinguish different kinematic limbs. The special parallelogram linkage mechanism is incorporated due to its equivalent translation capacity. Three categories of singularity configurations are investigated based on the detailed kinematic models. The reachable workspace is obtained through the spatial search methodology. Several novel kinematic error model associated performance indices are proposed in this work and examined on a translational parallel manipulator. Experiments are carried out and compared to testify the effectiveness of the kinematic analysis and proposed position-based controller.

Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to determine the importance of workspace and the relationship between workspace and geometry for the optimal design in parallel robot. In this paper, a new type of parallel robot is proposed, which can generate three degrees of freedom translation and two degrees of freedom rotation. The kinematics equations and mathematical model of 5-SPS-UPU parallel robot are derived. The inverse kinematics matrix and Jacobian matrix are derived by coordinate transformation theory and differential method. Using this software, the workspace of the new robot is analyzed by using boundary search method. The changes of robot attitude and position workspace are analyzed numerically. The analysis results show that the robot described in this paper has a large effective workspace and can be widely used in the field of industrial robots.

Abstract:Parallel-continuum robots combine the advantages of both parallel and continuum robotics. They offer a compromise between the inherent compliance and slenderness of continuum robots and the high precision and strength of rigid-link parallel robots. Throughout recent years there has been an increasing research interest in these novel architectures, which form closed kinematic chains that feature flexible, continuous links undergoing elastic deformations. As the number of publications in this emerging research field is steadily increasing, this survey article summarizes and reviews the state of the art in parallel-continuum robots, discussing their design and modeling. A definition and notation for parallel-continuum robots is introduced, allowing for a clear classification. In conclusion, current open research questions and possible applications for such robots are discussed.

Abstract:A novel 3-UP3R parallel mechanism with six degree of freedoms is proposed in this paper. One most important advantage of this mechanism is that the three translational and three rotational motions are partially decoupled: the end-effector position is only determined by three inputs, while the rotational angles are relative to all six inputs. The design methodology via GF set theory is brought out, using which the limb type can be determined. The mobility of the end-effector is analyzed. After that, the kinematic and velocity models are formulated. Then, workspace is studied, and since the robot is partially decoupled, the reachable workspace is also the dexterous workspace. In the end, both local and global performances are discussed using conditioning indexes. The experiment of real prototype shows that this mechanism works well and may be applied in many fields.

Abstract:In this paper, by reviewing the development process of the landmark parallel mechanisms (PMs) subjectively, a heuristic strategy of parallel robots' concept design is proposed. As an example, inspired by the Delta and its redundant R4 parallel robots, this paper proposes two novel 2-DoF parallel robots with properly-constraint and over-constraint types. The proposed robots with spatial kinematic chains are expected to provide high stiffness and easy assemblage performance. Kinematic issues are investigated, such as the mobility, inverse kinematics, singularity, and workspace.

Abstract:The 4SPRR-SPR parallel robot, which has considerable potential for application in the field of machining, is a novel closed-loop mechanism with a high rigid-weight ratio. Kinematics and workspace analyses of the 4SPRR-SPR parallel robot are key requirements for its application in machining. In this study, the inverse kinematics of the 4SPRR-SPR parallel robot is analyzed using a geometric method based on the mechanism arrangement of the robot. The forward kinematics model is derived by training the vector-quantified temporal associative memory (VQTAM) network, which originates from a self-organizing map (SOM). Furthermore, an improved algorithm is obtained by combining the locally linear embedding (LLE) and VQTAM methods. A boundary extraction algorithm for the workspace analysis of the parallel robot is proposed. The performance of the boundary extraction algorithm is analyzed and compared with that of a global search algorithm; the result indicates that the novel algorithm has the same computational accuracy in addition to higher efficiency. The workspace of the 4SPRR-SPR parallel robot is analyzed using the boundary extraction algorithm. Finally, the 3D model of the 4SPRR-SPR parallel robot is simulated using the ADAMS software to verify the reliability of the proposed algorithms. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods proposed in this study. In addition, the robot kinematics and workspace analysis methods described herein can be extended to other serial and parallel robots. This research provides a theoretical framework for trajectory planning of mechanisms, workspace optimization of robots, and robotic control.

Abstract:Cable-driven parallel robot(CDPR) is a type of high-performance robot that integrates cable-driven kinematic chains and parallel mechanism theory.It inherits the high dynamics and heavy load capacities of the parallel mechanism and significantly improves the workspace,cost and energy efficiency simultaneously.As a result,CDPRs have had irreplaceable roles in industrial and technological fields,such as astronomy,aerospace,logistics,simulators,and rehabilitation.CDPRs follow the cutting-edge trend of rigid-flexible fusion,reflect advanced lightweight design concepts,and have become a frontier topic in robotics research.This paper summarizes the kernel theories and developments of CDPRs,covering configuration design,cable-force distribution,workspace and stiffness,performance evaluation,optimization,and motion control.Kinematic modeling,workspace analysis,and cable-force solution are illustrated.Stiffness and dynamic modeling methods are discussed.To further promote the development,researchers should strengthen the investigation in configuration innovation,rapid calculation of workspace,performance evaluation,stiffness control,and rigid-flexible coupling dynamics.In addition,engineering problems such as cable materials,reliability design,and a unified control framework require attention.

Abstract:During the past few years, there has been an increasing demand in the field of precision engineering for fine motion of multi degrees of freedom. This motivates the development of a new robotics application field, microrobotics. Parallel manipulators are characterized by symmetry, high precision and stiffness, which allow to be used as microrobotic mechanisms. This paper analyzes the design of microrobotic mechanisms. The physical model of the solution space is presented for a 6 DOF Stewart parallel microrobotic mechanism. The relationships between the performance indices and link lengths of the microrobotics are presented in the established solution space so that performance atlases can be developed. The method provides a new way for the computer aided design of microrobotics.

Abstract:A novel 6-(P-2P-S) parallel robot is put forward. With the character of some movement decoupling on the orthogonal pose, the robot has been used as the macro manipulator of the macro/micro dual driven robots. Based on the design features, the position problem and the kinematics performance of the robot are analyzed. The velocity transmission evaluation indicators are defined. Considering structure constraints, the distribution of velocity transmission evaluation indicators in the constant orientation workspace is analyzed. which is used as the theoretical foundation of application. Because of the characters of simple structure, high carrying capacity, less motion inertia, good manufacturability, the 6-(P-2P-S) parallel robot can also be used as the MEMS equipment of optical, medical, and biological fields, etc.

Abstract:Parallel robots with rigid transmission mechanisms have been widely developed to improve the speed, precision, and load capability. However, it is still challenging in promoting soft parallel robots due to the difficulty in accurate kinematic modeling of soft continuum links. In this article, we present a general framework on the design, kinematic modeling, model-based characterization, and control for a class of soft parallel robots. The designed soft parallel robot consists of three fiber-reinforced soft pneumatic actuators, a base stage, and an output stage. With the introduction of the mathematical toolkit of the absolute nodal coordinate formulation, we develop a continuum-based model to describe and parameterize both the global complex configuration and the local large deformation of the soft parallel robot. In this sense, the mappings among the defined kinematic spaces of the robot can be characterized through force analysis. Based on the developed model, we next analyze the robot’s workspace and stiffness with different design parameters, which are also verified by a set of experiments. Finally, we establish a model-based trajectory tracking controller for the soft parallel robot. The experimental results demonstrate that with the feedforward controller, the end effector of the soft parallel robot can well follow the desired trajectories under different output velocities, where the average positioning error is about 2.6–3.9% of the maximum length of the workspace.

Abstract:Parallel robots have attracted much attention from both academia and engineering in last two decades. For development of novel parallel robots, topology and dimensions are brought into sharper focus, which are associated closely and have coupled influence on both motion pattern and performance together. However, currently topology design and dimension design are always performed individually with independent aims, leading to local optimal solutions and difficulties in further modification. Actually, the intrinsic relationship between topology and performance is concerned far from abundant. In this article, a method for topology and dimension synchronous optimization is investigated by employing finite screw theory. Within this approach, two algorithms are formulated to parameterize and deliver topology characters in the same format with dimensions. Topology design and dimension design are converted into a synchronous optimization model with mixed variables and multi-objectives, resulting in global optimal solutions of both optimal topology and dimensions. Topology and dimension synchronous optimization of a kind of 1T2R parallel robots is presented and discussed by comparing with state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:This paper reviews several key issues on the trends and open research problems of parallel manipulators. The research of a parallel manipulator structure is an essential question. It includes two research issues: design of a novel parallel robot mechanism and performance indexes. This paper reviews the methods on the two aspects and presents the research directions. The paper discusses the functions and roles of the kinematics and dynamics in parallel manipulators. Especially, the methods of developing dynamics are categorized and summarized. The paper also proposes a method to set up the control system, including the hardware and software, and evaluates the importance of a sensor with multi-information. The paper introduces two main new applications of parallel manipulators: as heavy-duty equipment and a micro-operation device, and highlights several questions to be solved.
