Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is a promising alternative to Haber–Bosch process as it can produce ammonia under ambient conditions. However, the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and poor nitrogen solubility cause low yields and Faradaic efficiencies for NRR. In addition to catalysts, as an important component of the electrochemical system, the electrolyte plays an important role during the electrochemical NRR. While there are separate reviews on electrolyte effects on NRR, the effects of electrolytes on catalysts and enhanced NRR performance have not been deeply analyzed. In this review, we discuss the roles of electrolyte modulation in slowing down proton transport, enhancing nitrogen solubility, optimizing the electronic structure of catalysts, and adjusting nitrogen reduction pathways, with an emphasis on electrolyte regulation principles in promoting NRR. The advantages and disadvantages of various electrolytes (e.g., aqueous electrolyte, organic electrolyte, ionic electrolyte, and solid electrolyte) are also summarized systematically. Besides, future developments in electrolyte regulation for electrochemical NRR are prospected.
