Engineering Failure Analysis
Abstract:Strong ground motions are essentially the low-cycle loads with remarkable broadband frequency energy deteriorating structural strength and ductility, and thus result in brittle-risk seismic damage to structures, i.e., the cumulative fatigue degradation effect, especially for the short-pier bridges that are particularly dynamically sensitive to the fatigue loads promoting the occurrences of flexure-shear even shear failures. In this study, 172 strong ground motion records were collected, and their low-cycle characteristic was quantified by the effective cycle numbers (ECNs) based on the accumulation fatigue damage theory. On the basis of the rain-flow counting method, the distribution of ECNs was obtained and the characteristics of frequency bands for strong seismic signals with various ECNs were discussed according to the Fourier amplitude spectra. Furthermore, the predominant failure modes of typical simply-supported girder bridges commonly constructed in railway transportation with equal and unequal 4-, 7-, and 10-m piers were determined based on the pier capacities and the failure discriminant criteria. The nonlinear time history analyses were performed for railway bridge cases with the flexure-, bond slip- and shear-induced deformations being individually or simultaneously considered to obtain the seismic responses under strong earthquake excitations. The effect of earthquake low-cycle fatigue degradation on failure modes of short-pier bridges and the influence of seismic failure behaviors on pier deformations were discussed. The numerical results indicate that the ECNs that characterize the accumulation damage effect originating from ground motions on the structures mainly fall into the interval [1,12], and the excitations exhibit obvious broad-banded frequencies larger than 10 Hz. Under seismic excitations, the demands of piers show a high consistency with ground motions in the time domain; whereas in the frequency domain, the shorter pier can retain the main broad frequency energy resulting in large seismic forces, while the higher pier filters the seismic energy significantly. The 4-m pier and 7-m pier (longitudinal) are prone to fail in shear after bending yield at large ECNs; despite nonlinear shear behavior is not considered for the 10-m pier and the 7-m pier (lateral), the flexure even shear failure could occur in the two piers due to the cumulative low-cycle fatigue damage induced by the strong earthquakes. The strain penetration effect of longitudinal reinforcements and the pre- and post-peak shear behaviors of piers can increase the pier drift by 1.64 and 14.19 times that of flexure-critical piers, respectively, indicating that the seismic demands would be significantly underestimated especially for the flexure-shear-dominated short piers if the bond-slip effect and shear behavior of piers are ignored during earthquakes.
