Abstract:In this work, a systematic investigation of the evolution of dual-phase microstructure, corrosion behavior of FeNiCr0.8Al0.8 high entropy alloy after isothermal annealing was conducted and corrosion mechanisms related to microstructure evolution and Cl diffusion behavior in as-annealed dual-phase alloys were revealed. The dual-phase microstructure characteristics in the as-annealed alloy were studied and the relationship between microstructure and corrosion behavior was established. The corrosion mechanism of dual-phase as-annealed alloys served in Cl-containing environments is revealed by combining experimental characterizations with first-principle calculation approaches. The as-cast FeNiCr0.8Al0.8 alloy possesses a two-phase body-centered cubic (BCC) microstructure. The BCC1 phase increases from the fraction of 48.78 % for as-cast specimen to 70.91 % for the as-annealed specimen after annealing treatment at 1200 °C for 100 h, which is in agreement with the predicted phase results. The coarsening behavior of the hierarchical phases after annealing and the appearance of the secondary nano-precipitates are observed. Meanwhile, the enhanced corrosion resistance of the as-annealed alloy was examined after prolonged time annealing, which is related to increased fraction of BCC1 phase and the intrinsic nature of the two-phase. The KPFM results and the first-principle calculations proved that the presence of BCC2 phase with a lower work function of 4.53 eV accelerates the occurrence of localized selective corrosion. The diffusion barrier of Cl in the BCC2 phase with lower value of 1.98 eV further interprets the mechanism of improved anti-corrosion behavior in the current as-annealed alloy.
