Abstract:The ability of underwater robots to perceive specific targets autonomously is an important guarantee for underwater robots to complete underwater tasks. However, the quality of underwater images decays with increasing underwater depth, resulting in low-contrast and high color distortion. In this paper, we improve the existing enhancement methods based on the fusion of optical-model methods and model-free methods to give a new set of learning-based underwater image enhancement method. The depth map features of a specific scene are first acquired, and the depth map is used as input to measure decay patterns and transmission maps. For background light estimation, we propose an estimation algorithm based on global background illumination, which successfully solves the problem of uneven illumination caused by the traditional processing. For white balance, we propose a method of white balance based on chromatic adaptation transform, which successfully solves the problem of local distortion caused by the inability of traditional white balance methods to adapt to the underwater environment. The traditional image weighted fusion method has fixed weights and cannot guarantee the optimal quality of the fused image. This paper propose a method for statistically optimal fusion weights, which significantly improves the quality of the fused image. In this paper, the UIQM and UCIQE are used as underwater image quality evaluation metrics. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves 2.24 and 2.1427 in two metrics compared to the FUnlE-GAN algorithm, 0.45 and 2.1627 compared to the Deep WaveNet algorithm, 0.57 and 2.0727 compared to the Retinex-based algorithm, 0.9 and 0.8317 compared to the Automatic red channel algorithm, 0.33 and 2.4307 compared to the WCID algorithm, respectively.
