Abstract:In this article, we present an ultrawideband terahertz (THz) tunable attenuator achieved by modulating the surface impedance of single-layer graphene strips. The attenuator consists of graphene strips distributed along a coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line. The cascaded design of these graphene strips effectively expands the device's attenuation range. Furthermore, by employing an ionic liquid as the top gate dielectric, we successfully reduced the maximum operating voltage of the device to 2.5 V. In addition, a self-aligned planarization technique has been proposed to address potential damage to the single-atomic-layer graphene during the fabrication process. This technique enhances the overall performance of the device. The graphene surface impedance exhibits a range of values between 850 and 6000 Omega/sq. The designed device exhibits an attenuation of less than 3 dB across the frequency range of 170-220 GHz at zero bias, with a maximum attenuation of 19.1 dB observed at 197 GHz. The fabrication and measurement of the device validate its ultrawideband, low insertion loss, high attenuation range, and nondispersive behavior. Furthermore, the designed THz attenuator also exhibits excellent adjustable attenuation performance over a wider frequency range and holds significant potential for applications in THz ultrawideband communication and detection systems.
